The best thing is to Demo one.
I have had guys 220# surf on the Hero
and love it.
If you are riding a board in this range 146L,
then it should be a great board for you.
If you want to make the drive we have one you can
Demo.

The Starboard Whopper Club is designed for just that purpose.
It has a nose and tail rubber bumper, full rail wrap EVA Pad, and
the standing area is color coded to indicate the best paddling position.
It has mini tuttle box fins for extra strength.
Also has inserts for attaching a Wind Surfing Sail.

Gear Talk / Re: Mule vs. Sticky Wheel
« on: May 16, 2010, 05:49:19 PM »
The Mule I have doesn't have a wide enough wheel base
to keep the tail rails from rubbing the inside of the wheels
on my wider tail Sup's. The nose and tail are cupped and both
ends are then pulled tight with a strap.
I believe that this method (of these two) does the least harm
to the structure of the board provided that the axles
are wide enough to clear the board rails and the tail
doesn't stick out too far so it hits the ground when you
tilt the nose up.

The Sticky Wheel is a suction cup that applys suction on a
small area of the skin of the board. I am concerned that
this device could create a disassociation of the skin from the core.
I suppose it would be a good test of the boards construction.

SUP General / Re: New Starboard boards

The 9'0" from 2009 is the Stinger.
It has a 5 fin configuration.
The Stinger really loosens up the board.
Pretty significant concave in the nose.
The concave helps to force entry into rolly waves
by pressing down the nose with your feet.
I rode it in the Quad and also with 5 fins (center being a hatchet).
Zippy in quad, nice roller coaster rides, and plenty floaty for me at 180#.
Stiff in 5 fin.
Will try it in 2-1, but I'm pretty sure it will be pretty close to the 9'0" Extremist,
which is a 2-1. With the right fins the Extremist can drive and pivot really well with control.

Gear Talk / Re: Starboard Hero Feedback
« on: February 21, 2010, 10:00:19 AM »
HI there, yes I've ridden the Hero in head high surf and found it to be
stable and pretty safe compared to the 711 and Pocket Rocket.
The Hero has less rocker than the Whopper so it has as good a
glide or better than that of the Whopper in caching waves and paddling.

We can arrange a Demo for you if you like.

We are in Huntington Beach.

Gear Talk / Re: Starboard Camo or Touch decks?
« on: October 27, 2009, 08:13:09 AM »
The Star touch deck is ok for moderate surfing.
If you really crank turns and come off the lip , the
Camo or an after market tail pad and deck pad may be preferred.
When punching through waves, the nose of the board may come up
and you may have to push it back down with your paddle in hand.
It is alot cushier to hit your paddle or knuckles on a deck pad.
When switching the paddle blade from side to side  at times you may hit the deck.
The Camo won't get that black streak across it or chip.
When kneeling on bare knees the pad helps.

Sounds great.
I've been meaning to get over that way.
What days do you meet and at what time usually?
Are you surfing?
