Foil SUP / Re: Yet another diy wing

HB, i dont have any pictures of the board conversion but that ones now f**ked so ill be doing another one in the next week or so, ill post a how to as its really simple and makes a perfect dockstart/towing board for next to no $$

ive done a couple of 10 mile downwinders on the gull recently, super happy with how it performs. really fast and turns easily for its size. i havent played round with the tail wing angle at all, not until im fluent in riding it as is. it seems to get quite pitch sensitive at high speed probably due to the leading edge shape and neutral tail angle. still feels really good for pumping tho so maybe it will just have to be a bit of a trade off

yes it is still I haha, I got that tapatalk app on my phone but couldnt figure out how to log in using my old details.
cheers theres still heaps of work to do yet but its turning out quiet a nice shape, the wing tip curve is slicccck. not the easiest thing in the world to shape out of cheap polystyrene

extremely impressive feat but one must remember it is called the milk run for a reason - 2000nm downwind, the whole way, with scarcely even a chance of any other wind direction if you stay in the trade belt. you could just about drift the trip in an inner tube if you took enough water

has anyone experimented with shimming a tail to create uplift?  I guess I'll have to try it one of these days.  Might have to learn the hard way why everyone has designed downforce in the tail.

a couple of years ago i made a tail wing that could be attached either way, upward or downward lift.
in my minimally educated opinion-

- awful pitch stability

- slight reduction in drag

- very even foot pressure, mast is almost in between your feet

- no drive in the pumps. i see it as a sort of triangulation of the water flow to create thrust. water is thrown down off the main wing and upward off the tail wing resulting in the board trying to pitch up sharply, which it cannot do if the rider is in control so the only other option for it is to go forward. you may notice in some flat water pumping vids little breaking waves being pushed up behind the foil as it goes along. this is the water being pushed up by the tail wing

as exiled said, a foil with enough lift to flat water start is next to useless in anything but the smallest surf.

board shape does make a huge difference though, from 18 paddle strokes to get airborne on a converted nsp 7' 9" surf sup with track mounts to as little as 6 strokes from stationary to airborne on my own design 5'10"x 27 foil sup. i like the idea of large concaves in the rails to reduce wetted surface area as quickly as possible when the board lifts and to keep the paddle blade surrounded by water when pulling hard close to the board, combined with a step tail like kalama boards it seems to work extremely well

in reality i dont think it makes all that much difference in the sense that if you are a light, strong paddler with the right foil you will be able to make almost any board fly, on the other hand if you are not in your physical prime and you do not possess the power to weight ratio and technique necessary to attain flight then you could have the best board with the biggest foil and still never even get close to a bunny hop

looks good, do you plan on laying carbon or glass in the socket on top to seal the ply? these wooden wings get water logged super easy and start to delam. my one had a few chips in the tips from the paddle and it only lasted 6 months before becoming soggy and delaminating

its hard work, trust me! you never knew you could pull on a paddle so hard. i would try and learn without straps to start with, unless your feet are exactly right you wont get the board out of the water.  i have never used straps on my sups but you can see from these 2 videos the difference the correct board makes.

first vid is on a 7'9 converted surf sup with the tracks waay too far back

second one is on my custom 5'10 with tuttle mount in the right place. it takes 11 paddle strokes to get airbourne- same as the big winds vid but he is using straps obviously.

looks good supunk! i use an axis style mount on my wings and am currently building a full new setup, i went away from the gofoil style sockets a few versions ago as it is extremely hard to make a tight fitting socket without a vacuum set up and even harder to make sure it all comes out straight and true.
i have used this method previously on my plywood wing and had no troubles with it at all.

here is the foam centre section of my new wing, all marked out on the bottom face which is left flat for now to make alignment easier.
i cut out an over size hole for the foil mount (axis mounts are 63mm wide so the hole i cut is around 73mm) and cut in a small rebate ~4mm deep to take a piece of carbon plate. the idea with leaving the underside of the wing flat is so the carbon plate sits in flush and level with the wing- easy to get it all lined up!

once the plate is glued in i put 1 layer 200g bi-ax carbon and 1 layer 200g twill in the rebate and out to the marked pencil lines around the hole. and cause this is only foam 1 layer of 200g twill over the whole top face of the wing.

now it is stiff enough to shape up the underside, glue the tips on and wrap it all in everyones favourite black cloth. i have only just started this wing so ill keep you updated as i go

Supunk, use a block plane, a spoke shave and long sanding board and it will shape up in no time

Thats it supeter, a good foiler like him would never touch down in a turn. Stalling the wing means a large increase in drag which is why he looks to suddenly pitch down in a turn. It would be super interesting if someone attachsd woolies to one of these and do some savage carves behind a boat

Looks to me like he hits the water on nearly every turn? To backup what pono says i have attached flow woolies to my foil tip when lookng at putting tip fences on - during a tight turn the inside wing completely stalls with flow heading not just 90 degrees up the wing toward the fuselage but nearly backward flow over the wing if the turn is super sharp. Add to that the natural poor stall characteristics of a high aspect wing and viola.. we can see the results

Cheers boys its always a lot of work but man it feels good when you lift off. Wax and bootys works ok but it wears off so quick, a few waves and under my feet will be rubbed bare. I found some nsi (nsj?) Deck pads that have built in foot strap mounts, ill get one of those for it once im back home in a few months

tried it out yesterday, what a sweet little board. heaps of bouyancy, stable as anything and paddles beautifully. super easy to pump up in flat water and handles like a prone board once up. gonna be magic with a couple foot straps and a deck grip
