SUP General / Re: Shoulder issues/Paddle Craft Type
« on: October 07, 2018, 03:55:41 PM »
Bummer.  Both my wife and I love to SUP and have been doing it almost daily since summer of 2014. And we both have shoulder pain. My wife's pain is the worst and X-rays confirm bone on bone issue. She had a shot in her shoulder and that actually made it worse. Since then we have been trying numerous treatments...heat/ice packs, various creams and ointments...some provide limited temporary relief. Surgery seems like a last resort,  but may be the only real solution. Open to any suggestions. (trhying to adjust our technique to use more torso/core rotation while trying to keep the arms and shoulders as relaxed as possible. It really helps me,  but she hasn't caught on yet.
Sure don't want to have to give up this sport....we kayak too, but find that even harder on the shoulders.

Surprised that Mark @ SIC hasn't come up with a board "deck" custom design out of wood....and the darn board would still be awesome to paddle!

Guess I am showing my age,  but I cannot figure out for the life of me why people are into Tatoos. Too many potential health risks......and I don't like to waste money on stuff like "body art".
Now maybe I would consider...DNR on my chest,  but it could be a sticker rather than a tat.... 8)

Nothing is more important than your health. Taking responsibility for your health should be priority one. This would save a lot of grief and money to start with. Our education system could really help by putting  more emphasis on health and fitness starting from grade school on up. But even with the best of intentions,  not everyone is going to escape illness, injuries and the genes they were born with. So there is always going to be a need for an effective health care system. I believe that the government COULD actually run a single payer system at least as well as other countries do. Social Security has been a pretty decent program and with a few tweeks could work well into the future (as long as Congress doesn't rob it anymore). So I have hope that a healthcare system could also be popular.
I believe the key to making these programs better is to make them the exact same program that Congress as well as the Military have to live by. And I do believe the goal of making healthcare a right for all US Citizens would be a worthy target.....one for all and all for one.

Gear Talk / Re: Blue - small compressor system for snorkeling...anyone?

Yes,  I remember those days.  When I was aquatics director for the City of Salem, Oregon,  I interviewed and tested all of my lifeguards personally. I could make myself pretty "heavy" on the bottom of the pool and they had to recover and then haul me out. We had some pretty awesome lifeguards......I ended up marrying one of them :)........

"I have always considered PADI to be the weenie version of NAUI. "
I
I taught back in the early 70's and PADI was just coming on the scene. I think their goal was to sell a ton of equipment and promote diving as a sport that ANYONE could do...even if you were not a swimmer.
As a water safety instructor long before I became a dive instructor,  I liked the fact that NAUI put heavy emphasis on "watermanship". Most of our pool training was to weed out the poor swimmers and folks that would not make very safe divers. My NAUI instructor course was a week long grueling event of many pool exercises designed to weed out weak swimmers. I was already a very strong swimmer and I really enjoyed some of the tests they put us through to try and "break" us. Kind of like NAVY Seal training. Some of the group washed out. So yea,  I guess we early NAUI instructors felt we were superior to the NASDAQ and PADI instructors.
But I am guessing that may have changed. The divemasters and shop owners of the outfit we use on MAUI seem very experienced and have thousands of hours of experience and they seem VERY safety conscious without making the experience uncomfortable. We have used B & B Scuba out of Kihei for 5 years in a row and they have always given us a great dive experience.

"biggest "member" and smallest brain. Very sad indeed.

Thanks....that is helpful to me. I am surprised that it appears the watch has limited activity tracking on the watch.

I am interested in whether or not the Apple Watch 4 comes with any kind of specific activity tracking for standup paddling and what data it records. Do you need to download some kind of specialty "complication" to do this? Interested in the Lte version so that I would not have to take out the phone to make it all work.

.....do you believe Elon did the right thing by settling with the SEC?
I sure do. Maybe now the company can concentrate on "making Tesla great again".
Stock action (reaction) should be interesting to watch on Monday!

For liability and safety reasons,  most instructors do not make their students practice "free ascents".....probably a good thing.  But  back in the day when I was a NAUI instructor,  it was part of our training to teach free ascents and how to safely ascend if you ran out of air. I have done it from 150 ft. and it is not easy.
Amazing how diving gear has changed. My wife and I just had 4 awesome dives @ Molokini using dive regulators/computers supplied by the guides. Pretty cool technology.....but it still doesn't buy you any more downtime than playing by the old NAVY tables for repetitive no de-compression diving.

The greatest change in water pressure occurs in the first 33ft. of descent. If your lungs are full of air and you suddenly ascend without continuously exhaling you will definitely be at risk of air embolism. Diving and snorkeling are great sports,  but can be fatal if not performed safely and with at least some basic training.
Side note but kind of similar topic: Been watching novice paddleboards take off up the beach at Makena in calm water with no wind...no leash or lifebelt or other safety equipment....then an hour later watching them try to battle hopelessly back to where they put in as the sudden strong North winds pick up. For some it will be a LONG walk home if they make it in ok. Even SUP can be dangerous.

I am somewhat reassured that we in the paddling community can have such a civil discussion on such a distasteful matter. It is happening because we all care about the future of our country and recognize the significance of the moment.
Trump made some campaign promises that sounded to me like he could take the country in a better direction. He represented the possibility of change (draining the swamp, etc). I voted for change and have been severely disappointed in what has happened. The swamp is clearly growing and we need to clean house more than ever.
I am no saint,  but I am totally disgusted with the lack of moral leadership and the fact that lying and cheating and acceptance of degrading behavior is becoming the norm.
Members of the Supreme Court are supposed to represent themselves as the most honorable and trustworthy judges and interpreters of our laws. They are expected to be politically neutral and their personal "character" beyond reproach.
The current applicant for the position does not have the qualities we seek. Surely there must be others that are better qualified for the job that don't have such a checkered past.
