Gear Talk / No Javelins in 2018?
« on: July 15, 2017, 08:35:11 AM »
I heard from a trusted source that Naish is discontinuing the Javelin next year. The Maliko sales must be alot better?  I was intrigued by the video of the Javelin in flat water......the way the water passes around and over that strange nose looks pretty smooth and quiet. Not as great as it looks?  I'd sure like to try one someday.

Gear Talk / Board Bag Shrinkage Issue
« on: July 10, 2017, 02:52:02 PM »
I have a nice 14ft. FCS coffin style board bag that I haven't used for awhile and so I decided to try and sell it.
But I have now discovered that I can't get either my 14 Bark Dominator or my 14 Connector to fit!  We measured the bag and it appears to have shrunk about 3 inches!  Anyone else experience this?  I bought this bag brand new back in 2014 at the same time I got a new 14 Naish Glide and it fit perfectly. I have no need for the bag at this time so have it on Craigslist for $50,  yet it isn't going to be much of a deal if you can't get any 14ft. board into it!! :-\

Just wondering if anyone else is using Endomondo to track their training?  I have the free app on my Android smartphone (S7) and use it all the time to track my outings. It uses the phone's GPS to track distance, speed, etc AND it picks up my heart rate from my chest strap and provides calorie burn as well as average and max heart rate. It automatically updates my activity and calorie burn info to MyFitnessPal app on my Chromebook so I have a record of all my fitness activity saved for review at any time. I think it is great and I highly recommend it. By the way,  even though my S7 is waterproof,  I keep it in a ziplock bag inside my fanny pack and so far so good. My Sony Experia Z3v was also waterproof,  but I guess it took one too many short swims and failed about 3 months short of being paid for......so when anybody says "waterproof"....take it with a grain of salt!  My "waterproof" Garmin 78sc also failed just 3 months out of warranty. But I sent it back and Garmin sent me a "reconditioned" unit for $90.....and so far it has been fine....but I don't expect it to last more than a year based on passed experience. Still impressed though with what all these small gadgets are capable of doing and what pleasure they have brought me. Worth the expense I think.

Gear Talk / Wrist Based Heart Rate vs. Strap?
« on: December 09, 2016, 12:27:48 PM »
Currently I have been using a Garmin Heart Rate Strap to send (via ANT+) to my Garmin 78SC that I have mounted to the deck of my board. I also have Endomondo running on my S7 and so I have a running record of my stats that I can look at later. I can easily monitor my average speed, distance, and heart rate as I am paddling. This works for me,  but frankly if I could ditch the strap and get the same accuracy from a wrist based heart rate monitor I might go for it. (would also want the heart rate data to be "seen" by my 78sc as well as my smartphone S7).
So my question is:  any of you paddlers out there using a gps smartwatch like say the Vivoactive AND using a smartphone with an app like Endomondo to track your workouts?
