Yesterday there was a large crowd of friends and fans that did a large "paddle out" event in honor of Steve. He is going to be greatly missed.
I credit him for inspiring me and my wife getting into SUP and we are forever grateful as it changed our whole lifestyle.
There is a great drone video of the event over on Facebook. Big Winds also has a nice tribute to Steve on their website. Check it out.

Sessions / Fun on the Chetco River.....
« on: October 08, 2019, 02:49:42 PM »
My wife and I are exploring Southern Oregon and just wanted to say what a fun time we had in Brookings, Oregon on the Chetco River. The weather the past 2 weeks has simply been awesome and we were able to get out and paddle everyday. Some on the Chetco River and some on the Rogue River and then more on Garrison Lake in Port Orford. Haven't seen any other standup paddlers in any of these areas. Folks,  you are missing out! (tried to share attached video,  but I guess it is too large and I don't know how to edit)
If you want to see it you could email me and maybe I can share it that way.

I am interested in whether or not the Apple Watch 4 comes with any kind of specific activity tracking for standup paddling and what data it records. Do you need to download some kind of specialty "complication" to do this? Interested in the Lte version so that I would not have to take out the phone to make it all work.

SUP General / For Tesla Fans.......

.....do you believe Elon did the right thing by settling with the SEC?
I sure do. Maybe now the company can concentrate on "making Tesla great again".
Stock action (reaction) should be interesting to watch on Monday!

Random / Pro Tennis Needs to make some changes.......
« on: September 08, 2018, 05:24:17 PM »
Ok.  So I watched the womens finals today and was very disappointed that Serena's behavior really took the joy away from young Osaka's victory. Serena definitely lost her cool (as many players sometimes do under such pressure) and she had to pay the price. You can argue that the call about being "coached" during the match was fair or not. (her coach even admitted that he was coaching...so no argument there). I got to thinking about how this could have been prevented.
These players are pros and they hire coaches, trainers, etc. just like other pro sports.
So why not make the coach sit on the bench next to the court so that he or she can do what they are paid to do? The coach of the football team doesn't sit in the stands and  expected to keep his mouth shut?! If the player doesn't want the coach to say anything,  well,  that's up to the player. This devastating call would not have happened if it was permitted for coaches to do their job. This whole situation is going to get so blown out of proportion because of the stage. Young Osaka was robbed of the opportunity to really WIN based solely on her skill. Fans should be upset because Serena's behavior cut the match short and they didn't get to see the match they paid to see.....and I think it would have ended up being a great 3 set match in which either player could have won. Such a shame.
My other peeve for those of you out there that know tennis....I think they should do away with the "let" on serves. Play the point if the ball gets served into the box,  even if it hits the net. No different than any other point where the ball hits the net and still goes in....you play it.  This would speed up the game,  save server energy, and add some extra skill needed to return tricky serves where the ball hits the tape and still goes in. I know there are some pros out there that would like to see this instigated.
Anyway,  I hope the men's finals tomorrow go  a lot smoother !

Haven't tried the new Rocket 14 yet,  but I'll bet there will be quite a difference in flat water performance!?
My Connector is an older 14X29 and the new Rocket is 14 X 27 and very light!!
Looking forward to getting it wet soon!

Gear Talk / Imagine 14 Rocket.......
« on: May 01, 2018, 09:19:12 AM »
Anyone here paddled the Imagine Rocket 14?  I am thinking of pulling the trigger on one,  site un-seen.
I love my older Connector 14,  but I am wanting something smoother and quieter on flat water. I am also thinking about the D2 as I know for sure it will be quiet and smooth like my 2014 Dominator.
I've got "board fever" and if I get the Rocket it will be a treasure of some kind as Imagine is no longer in production (so I am told). :-\

SUP General / Need SUP rental advice in Oceanside or Dana Point
« on: March 11, 2018, 02:50:16 PM »
Well,  my wife and I are down here in Oceanside for a few days and hoping to do some paddling. But so far,  the rental outfits we have found don't have any quality 12.6 or 14ft. touring/race boards to rent. I guess I made the wrong assumption that SUP and Kayak rental outfits would be well equipped and all over the place. Not so. Anyone have any recommendations?
What about on Catalina Island?  We are going to schedule 1 trip out there either Tuesday or Wednesday.
Thanks for any help or advice!

I am still debating about what if any watch/tracker to buy and why. I really enjoy tracking my workouts and am only thinking about changing my current setup because I know that sooner or later my current gear is going to fail.
My current setup:
Garmin 78sc mounted on the board where I can easily see my average speed, distance, and heart rate.
Heart Rate is being sent from a Scosche Rhythm+ (arm band...ANT+ sensor)
Endomondo App on my S7 also tracks everything including the heart rate and the app also synchs automatically with MyFitnessPal back when I get home and onto my wifi network.

This has all been working pretty well,  but I'd love to ditch the arm band or chest strap which I also sometimes use. And it would be nice NOT to have to carry the phone. But I do really like the Garmin out front to watch. I guess my real question is,  anyone using the Gear Sport for SUP?  How well is it working? Can the Endomondo App be installed on it?  What about Garmin trackers for SUP?
Open to all sugguestions and advice (other than don't use any of this stuff....sorry,  but it motivates me and pushes me forward toward my goals...I use it to compete against myself)

Sneak Peeks, Rumors, and Wish Lists / A "clog-like" iSUP ?
« on: January 05, 2018, 10:04:44 AM »
Is there any reason why an iSUP could not be designed with a much lowered standing area similar to what some of these new "clogs" are like?  My Red Paddle Elite is a nice board,  but very "tippy" when the going gets rough. Just seems like it would be much better if I wasn't standing so high off the water. If inflatable kayaks can be done,  why not an SUP with some variety of deck shapes? Do you think there would be enough appeal for more sophisticated iSUPs patterned after some of the better current SUP designs?

Gear Talk / New Starboard iSups.......2018
« on: November 02, 2017, 12:45:31 PM »
http://star-board-sup.com/2018/boards/race-inflatable/

Anyone else notice the interesting additions to the Starboard iSup offerings?  It will be interesting to see if their efforts to create a stiffer board match Red Paddle's efforts.
I wonder what that 18 X 27 will weigh?  Interesting looking design and features.

Anybody using or thinking about getting the new Samsung GearSport watch?
It looks like it might be just the ticket. It's waterproof and has hr monitoring...even when swimming. I assume that one could put the Endomondo app on it as well as myFitnessPal which are both apps I enjoy.
It also comes with wireless charging which I also have enjoyed with my S7 phone.
If it will broadcast my hr to my Garmin GPS 78sc that I mount on my board I'll be seriously interested in giving it a try.

SUP General / First Time out on the "new hip"
« on: October 04, 2017, 03:04:07 PM »
Awesome day in Newport, Oregon today. It's been 3 weeks since I had my right hip replaced.  Today was the first "test paddle" to see how it feels.  Just a little pain still there when first getting up,  but after that it's ok.
Sure felt nice to be back to paddling. Walking with a cane is no fun. Helps too when the weather is awesome. It was in the mid 60's with very little wind. And the icing on the cake.....live crab available on the Chelsea Rose for $8/pound. The 2 lb. crab were excellent. Life is good!!
I would attach a picture,  but it says the file is too large and I don't know how to reduce it.
