SUP General / Re: Delta Airlines - Linear Inches Requirement
« on: January 06, 2015, 09:10:51 AM »
Ok, I've scratched the idea of carrying my board, not really worth the headache when I can rent one for less than the baggage charges would be.

So, my next question is anyone who has ridden the Allwave, I'm very comfortable with that board. My two choices in CR are a Coreban Fusion or Bomb, both 9'0. The Bomb looks to be just like the Allwave, really stable, etc. The Fusion looks like a better board to surf, but I'm worried about the width and stability. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Yeah, I have to fly Delta because I have a ton of points with them, and frankly, they have always been pretty easy to deal with travelling. I've used curbside for my kiteboarding gear (in a golf bag) which has worked every time.

I figured it couldn't be total linear dimension, but I wanted to double-check with some real world experience. Now I just have to decide if I want to carry my Allwave, or rent a 9'0 Coreban Fusion, pricing at this point is pretty much a wash.

For those of you that carry a paddle, what do you use to protect it?

SUP General / Delta Airlines - Linear Inches Requirement
« on: January 02, 2015, 10:34:10 AM »
I'm thinking of taking my 9'2" Allwave to Costa Rica on Delta. The baggage requirement states a max of 115 linear inches, which counting width would easily put most all SUP's out of this range. So, my question is has anyone had experience with flying on Delta with a SUP? Any issues?

Gear Talk / Nose Rider SUP to complement Allwave
« on: December 08, 2014, 06:09:55 PM »
I'm riding a 2013 Fanatic Allwave 9'2" right now, 180 lbs, mostly in knee to head high waves. I love the board and it's stability and feel very confident on it in most any wave at my local break.

My question is that I used to longboard, and while I can ride the nose a bit on the AW, it's not really made for that. So I'm looking for an inexpensive 2nd board for smallish waves (knee to waist) that I can work on nose-riding with. Any suggestions?

I don't need a performance board, just something that is stable, tracks well, and is stable enough to walk up the nose.

Yeah, I got a board from Surf Hut in Imperial Beach, really nice owner, good rates and allowed me to keep it overnight. It was a Laird 10'0", not bad, not great, just didn't have the width I'm used to. I'd be interested in checking some other spots, I just found a nice new hotel under per diem in IB.

Headed back out to SD next week, staying on the beach at Imperial Beach. Last time I rented from a shop there, really nice guys, but limited selection. Any other ideas for renting a board nearby for surfing?

I'll bring a spring suit this time, last time I could get away with a 1 mil top and boardies.

SUP General / Re: Why are you SUP surfing and not prone surfing?

I'll chime in here, I used to surf off and on when I was younger (teens). Then I discovered kiteboarding and was hooked, but I needed something for the windless stretches. So I got a SUP just to get wet and some exercise. Flat water lasted about two sessions, and I slowly moved into waves, now I'm enjoying it almost more than kiting.

Main advantages for me:

- Great total body workout
- Can ride anything, as long as there's no wind
- Better viewpoint
- I like using the paddle as leverage down a wave
- I can do way more on a SUP than on a traditional longboard, can walk up the nose like a champ

Hey for those of you who have gone, how big is CR typically? I was talking to a guy who just got back and said it was basically  head to double overhead everyday. I'm comfortable with a few foot overhead (East Coast US), but I want to make sure I don't get killed on a SUP.

Are there locations where it's a bit more manageable when big? I'm sure there are, some details would be nice.

Nice, yeah I've contacted Marcos along with Point Break Surf as they carry Fanatic boards (I ride a 9'2 AW).

I'm staying at the JW Marriott near Avellanas only because I can use points there and get the room for free. Planning on moving around as need be, but would like to ride most morninga t Avellanas and then go do activities, etc. with the wife in the afternoons.

We may end up spending a few nights at Arenal too, just because it looks cool and I can kiteboard there as well.

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Costa Rica Rental/Spots
« on: July 27, 2014, 11:44:11 AM »
I'm planning a trip to the Tamarindo or Nosara area in late November/early December. I've done a good bit of research and contacted a few companies for a good rental SUP for surf.

Any suggestions? Who has everyone used on trips down there? I'm flying into Liberia and I'm thinking with Delta's poilcies I cannot take my board even if I wanted to (9'2" Fanatic AW).

So, I'm looking for a comparable board to what I ride, good carbon paddle, etc.

Also, how is Playa Avellanas for SUP, I'm probably going to stay at the JW Marriott because I have points and it's free, and frankly, free is hard to beat. I'll have a rental car so I can move around.

I'm comfortable in waves up to head high, but have only surfed beachbreaks. I'll probably also bring my kite gear and spend a few days at Arenal.

I'm looking for the same thing, want to SUS a bit in the AM, then hang out with the wife and what not the rest of the day. So, a good hotel is high on the priority list.

Also, good board rental.

Where are the waves better suited to a SUS (less plunging, gentler)?

Headed out week after next, can I get by with a 1 mil top and boardshorts?
Easily. Water temps are in the mid to high 60's.

Ha you say that, but I'm from NC/SC, we don't get to boardies until it's a comfortable mid 70's. Anyways, I can make it happen as long as the air temps are good.

So next question, and I know I asked before, anywhere to rent a SUP near a break that's somewhat decent so I don't have to transport the board (my rental is completely up to my company on what I end up with). I'll try and get a minivan or sometthing.

Thanks
