Gear Talk / Re: Nose Rider SUP to complement Allwave
« on: August 30, 2015, 08:21:11 AM »
Posted this on seabreeze too, pretty much love the board when everything works and I can get to the nose, (well the top 1/3 of the board - I got one ride with a sneaker 5 in 3 sessions so far).

So, I've got 3 sessions on the JL B&B 10'1", here's my quick impressions, although conditions haven't been ideal.
Session#1: sideshore wind, really high tide, weak waist high rollers
Session#2: Too much wind, should have kited instead of SUP
Session #3: Clean, chest to head, some closeouts, would typically be on my AW if I hadn't just gotten this one

-Stability/Paddling: It's plenty stable for me (6'0, 175 lbs), I ride a Fanatic AW 9'2" as my primary board, so it's not as stable as that, but really no issues. To mirror what Linter has said, it is a bit slow to paddle, and it definitely feels like it's the concave and rails slowing it down. I'm not really worried about it, but I am a bit concerned that it may make catching smaller waves difficult.

-Build/Weight: I haven't weighed it officially although I may today, it feels lighter than my 9'2" AW, which was a pleasant surprise. I love the full deck pad, not sure why more companies haven't thought to do this on longboards. Build is solid, single fin is massive and was a bit of a pain to get in place.

-Ride: So, this board is kinda like a home run hitter, in 3 sessions, I've lined up roughly 5 really fun rides where I got to the nose and the concave did it's job. Now, a lot of this is conditions, other than this morning where the surf finally cleaned up and I could pick some clean rides out. The first session I cheated and basically angled the board in the direction I wanted to go and didn't really work on the pivot turn. Today, I worked the pivot turn into the smaller waves when I get them, and it works pretty well. I rode a few waves normal without trying to noseride, and it will turn decently with some glide, little wobbly in the middle of the board. Echoing what everyone else has said, this board takes some getting used too, and is by no means all-around, but....................

The few times I got to the nose and felt it accelerate through the wave with good stability was probably the most fun I've had on a SUP in months. So.......all in all, Jimmy delivered on this one.

If you want a dedicated noserider, this seems to be it, if you want an all-around you occasionally noseride, I'd look at a different board.

Just ordered a 10'1" JL B&B - will post reviews soon. Almost went with Sunova Style or waited for the Fanatic Stylemaster, but I think the JL B&B is more a dedicated noserider which is what I want, still have the Allwave for everything else and bigger surf

I am checking out the Style as well....
reports and vids show it to be a great all around longboard SUP.
It will be light, based on the rest of the Sunova's I have seen.... and really well made... at a great price.

I have seen and touched the B&B machine.
It is noticeably different from all other boards.... even at a distance.
The tail has very exaggerated rocker... more of a reverse scoop.
It is designed with one purpose in mind.... noseriding.... and apparently it's very good at it.
Linter has written some great stuff about it... here and on Seabreeze.(very positive)

I would say the choice would come down to how you intend to use it.
If your goal is "tip time" the Black & Blue is a good bet.
If you are looking for a light, well rounded Longboard for every occasion.... the Style is the go.

Good and yeah I've talked to Linter on here as well. I'm thinking it's going to be the B&B, my goal is to nose-ride and have a board that is made for it, . I'll still use the Allwave for everything else.

The Sunova just looks like it would be a blast, well made, etc. It's a hard call, the Fanatic Stylemaster looks fun as well.

Anyone here ridden the Style? Trying to get as much information as I can before I make a decision between it and the B&B.

Yeah JimK, sent you a e-mail, any chance of getting the Style? It looks pretty nice.

Yeah to clarify, I meant cheap in terms of flights for me from the EC, there's typically some good deals to Barbados.

I was looking at Silver Point Hotel on the south shore.

Yeah I'm leaning heavily towards the Striker, seems like it could be a nice balance of everything. I think it will have some overlap with my 9'2" Allwave, so I'm going to try and go down to 8'11" on it.

Interested in this board, it's either this one or the Black and Blue. Will use for noseriding and all around longboard feel in waist high or smaller mushy EC waves.

Any comparisons vs. Black and Blue? Sounds like this board would be perfect as it's a bit easier to ride than the B&B, and can still get some nose time.

I'm 175 lbs. for comparison too.

I'm in the same situation as you, minus the kid or the SUP-ing wife. This year we went to Nosara and Avellanas, CR, which was fun.

For somewhere to mix up, I've been thinking of going to Barbados, good kiting and waves, pretty cheap too.

Any more updates on this? I currently ride a 9'2 Fanatic AW (160L) and I want stability in whatever I get.

I'm debating the following boards for noseriding/longboard feel (I'm 180 lbs, riding small EC waves):

JL Black and Blue 10'1"
King's Dauminator (Found on CL): 9'2, 28"W, 120L (worried about how unstable that will be)
Starboard Noserider

Yeah, I'm debating getting one to replace my old ContourROAM, I'm sure the image/movie quality would be much improved, I just like the form factor of the Contour on the paddle mount and on a line mount when kiting.

The one other motivating factor to switching over to GoPro would be all of the drone mounting capabilities, I'm itching to buy a drone. The GoPro app seems to be finally semi-worthwhile too.

Any more impressions? I'm seriously debating pulling the trigger on the 10'1", I want a dedicated noserider for up to chest high waves.

Cool, Ralph is definitely the man in Southern Cal. Thanks again for everything, maybe next time I'll give you something decent to film.

Which this just intensifies my need for a drone........I've dropped enough hints with the wife

Yeah I'm trying to demo it, the nose looks a bit narrow for noseriding, and that's my main worry.

I have the 9'2" Allwave and have ridden the 9'5" Mana quite a bit. I would go for the Allwave hands down over the Mana. The Allwave just outperforms it in my estimation, and I've had a friend have one delam as well. Naish did setup with a new board, so good on them for that, but I'd still go Allwave.
