SUP General / Re: Delta Airlines - Linear Inches Requirement
« on: December 23, 2015, 07:04:48 AM »
Yeah called and talked to the Platinum Skymiles line, and 112 linear inches (L+W+H) is it. So, basically all SUP's are out, my SUP would be 140 inches or so. I would be ok with using the porter and trying to sneak it through, but then the question is, what if I get there and can't get it back. As much as I'd like to give my first born to DHL, it's not happening.

This sucks, guess I'm looking for a rental in CR now.

I just checked the Delta baggage page:
http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/traveling-with-us/baggage/before-your-trip/special-items.html

It now clearly says:
Linear dimension (length + width + height) cannot exceed 115 inches (292 cm).

This is a new rule, before you could take a board up to 9'5 in length but with this linear dimensions rule you can forget about taking even a tiny SUP on Delta.

Yeah, I saw that, I thought everyone was just getting lucky. I've seen boards going through as luggage, of course it would be my luck I'd get the board there and can't get it back. So now I'm not sure what I'm going to do, I guess look for a board rental around Avellanas/Tamarindo like I did last time. I sent Marco with Costa Rica SUP in Tamarindo a e-mail.

Ahh, I did just think of one possibility. My paddle is a KeNalu, so technically I could unglue the paddle and throw it in my bookbag or something for protection and throw the shaft into the boardbag. Take a couple of glue sticks and use a hair dryer at the hotel.

Anyone tried this? Seems feasible.

I was about to reply to you. You are correct. Outsized luggage. There was a time when no-one knew what a paddle was and I got away with saying it was "fishing gear" and did not pay. No longer.

One think I hate more than a bad water-sodden rental board is a heavy metal shafted rental paddle, so if I can only take one, I take the paddle. A heavy paddle can cause all sorts of back pain for me giving extra reason.

For SUS though that's a different matter. There, the board would be more important to me than the paddle.

3pc paddles have come a long way though and there are some great options out there.

Yeah. I was searching Delta's policy, no luck, they charge for fishing poles, no definition of oars, but they don't allow canoes or kayaks, so kinda kills oars.

I'm going to think about renting a board again I guess, or maybe a 3pc paddle.

I'll see if I can fit the paddle in with the board, but I don't see that happening safely.

Update - 5 minutes after I posted this, Delta responded on a e-mail I sent them about this that basically they would charge me for the paddle as oversized baggage too.

So, the question is can I pad it enough to fit in the Naish board bag that they provide with the boards to get it there and back without breaking it.

I'm doubting it. So, I may rent a paddle only, or just go ahead and rent board and paddle, or buy a 2 piece paddle.

Update to this thread - going back to CR in February, and this time I do want to bring my board and paddle. I have a 8'8" Hokua now with a bag that came with it. I'm going to pack it down with a lot of protective foam, etc. for the rails, etc.

Now my question is the paddle. I have/getting a paddle bag for xmas, question is do the airlines charge for it? I've tried e-mailing Delta, and I will probably call them tomorrow. Any suggestions?

How's Langosta compare to Avellanas? Are there any other less-travelled breaks that are more of a slower, SUP friendly break?

I didn't go too far north toward Little Hawaii at Avellanas, mainly stuck to right in front of Lola's, is there anything further up?

Yeah, fully aware on the clothing optional Orient Beach, should be interesting. Still deciding between there or Avellanas, CR, or Barbados. Barbados is tougher because the flights on Delta don't line up well (I have a ton of Delta points).

Kiting wise - any decent surf breaks out from Orient Beach, I've read on some of the forums it can be decent.

arenal to kite or ws, i assume---go to tabacon, you wont be disappointed

Yeah I kiteboard mostly, I probably won't bring it though if I travel with my SUP, just hang out with the wife some. I was looking at staying in Tabacon last night, seems pretty cool

So yeah 5 days of chasing surf and hanging out at Lola's then 3 days at Tabacon hiking, going to the springs, etc.

Yeah, I talked to some guys about that break and they said it was double overhead while I was there. Overhead east coast waves, no problem, overhead, quick beachbreak in CR, not so much.

I probably will go to Arenal for a few days and then Avellanas for 5 (we have a free hotel room at the JW Marriott there) so we probably won't go to Nosara. Which naturally the last day I was there and leaving for the airport, the swell settled down and it looked like a really fun spot.

Any info on St. Martin? I'll take my kiting gear, but would love to SUP on the north shore or wherever there's waves and protection from the trades.

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Avellanas/Tamarindo Breaks
« on: December 07, 2015, 01:05:09 PM »
I went last March to Avellanas and Nosara, and caught it during one of the larger south swells of the year it seems as it was well overhead and closing out/double overhead and larger at Nosara. I rode the whole time at Avellanas near Lola's and found the waves on the beachbreaks in front of Lola's and down the beach to be pretty quick for a SUP/my skill level.

So, I'm thinking of going back first week in February where I heard it's smaller typically. I think I've progressed quite a bit this year and I've moved to a smaller board which has helped a lot (8'8" Hokua vs. the 9'6" Mana I rented last year). That combined with smaller size I'm hoping will make it fun.

My question is - are the waves always that quick, or did the larger swell play into it? Are there slower, more SUP-friendly breaks nearby?

San Jose then jumping over to Quepos. Another option is that I will probably have a free place to stay down there for awhile, so I may be interested in buying a board, or leaving one down there.

Aloha Punta Cana - did a day rental with them in June, really nice couple, highly recommend. They have waves (although it was choppy, disorganized due to onshore wind) and some flat water yoga as well.

Thanks Bean.

I got the blue one & it is beautiful.

I'm also surprised at how good the RS Pro looks on it
& it went on easier than I thought.

Any pics or does it go on clear?
