Foil SUP / Re: Next wing after Maliko 200 - Progression
« on: June 04, 2021, 08:24:27 AM »
Any opinion on the pedestal length 6.5 to 9.5"? Also, I have a flip tip tail that's a 14.5" from a friend, will that work with the GL210 on the GF 1.0 mast?

Classifieds / Sell/Trade - 6'5" JL Flying-V (Charleston, SC)
« on: May 30, 2021, 10:29:11 AM »
I'm just throwing this out there because it's proabably not worth shipping, so I'm in Charleston, SC. I basically want the smaller 5'11" Flying-V, so a trade or make an offer on selling. It has a few knicks and dings, but nothing too critical, great board, just want it with less volume/length.

Yeah, not into winging (yet), but I kite OR kites, have the 12m Aluula Roam. It's simply better at everything, as it should be to be honest.

Foil SUP / Re: My new Armstrong Foils
« on: May 27, 2021, 07:06:50 PM »
Old topic, but pretty interested in the 1550 as a step up from the Maliko 200, on a 6'5" Flying-V, no real plans to wing it (I still like kiting, ha.) Any thoughts on it, a lot of guys here have them and the construction does look top notch. Figure the 1550 V1 is under $2k now, ha not sure on the V2.

Thoughts?

Don’t do it. Too small. Living in SC, leave the 1550 to proners. Grab the 1850 if you want Armstrong.

Good to know, I'm between the 1850 and GL210, I already have a GoFoil setup, was going to possibly buy a whole new mast/fuselage either way I go and sell the Maliko. I guess the other option is to just get a GL210 and keep the Maliko and swap wings or drop down to the GL180. Armstrong is intriguing, I like the construction

Any comparision/thought on any of the Armstrong wings, they seem really well put together. I'm about 95% certain I'll go with the GL210, but figured I'd do my research.

You described my progression. After a year on M200 my first HA wing was GL210. Now I have a quiver of GLs 140 to 240. They are great in my Gulf of Mexico conditions. I think you’re on the right track.
I am sure some will chime in with NL suggestions 😀

Yeah, same board, same progression line. I had one person say go with a 180, but honestly, I have no issues being overcooked with the 200 95% of the time here, I'd rather have plenty of lift than not enough.

Foil SUP / Next wing after Maliko 200 - Progression
« on: May 22, 2021, 02:06:20 AM »
So.......I'm a year in on the Maliko 200, confident riding in mostly knee to waist high, occasional waist/chest day (East Coast US waves). I'm not pumping back out the back great yet, but making some progress, but no issues linking waves and getting longer rides (45 seconds, etc.)

I'm debating going prone or staying with the SUP and maybe progressing to a high aspect wing. I'd like to try something with a bit more speed, but without losing the smaller wave lift of the Maliko 200. I also have a Gen 1 GoFoil mast that might be showing it's age a bit with some flexing.

So, any suggestions on going to the GL210, or what? If it's everyone's experience that gradual switch to prone just because of the lower volume is the biggest progression, I may go that route, but damn I still love hoping on the SUP. There's a few reasons the SUP is a better choice on some of our breaks (longer paddle often against some current to inlet breaks, gutless waves, and the occasional snipping at your heels).

Any thoughts?

Foil SUP / Re: Mast loosening while up and gliding
« on: May 22, 2021, 01:57:27 AM »
So on my gen 1 Go Foil and probably Gen 1 JL Sup i did end up shimming the tuttle with some foil tape.  Just on the side and it was snug and no more clunking sound.

Yeah, it's a Gen 1 mast. I think it may be a bit of both the mast not being quite as stiff and loose in the tuttle. It went from slightly noticeable to almost unrideable in a few sessions (after a year of sessions). I'll start reviewing options for a new setup, I'm honestly progressing to a point that a new, more efficient foil might be in the offering. I was going to just progress to prone, but damn if I don't always grab the SUP. I just like all of the advantages of SUP (the downside being the extra volume).

Fish,

That happened all the time when I was talking my foil off my board everyday until I got the bigger van where board and foil went in all as one. So after the first time of assembling the foil in the Tuttle, hearing the same noise you describe, and finding a loose front screw (rear not so much) upon returning to the beach...but after tightening the screws again, the noise was not heard again and the screws were never loose again until I took the foil off the board sometime later for whatever reason.

My assumption was that we really can't tighten the screws enough to truly set the Tuttle mast into the board's receiver no matter what we do in the beach, and the creaking, cracking sounds we're hearing is simply the upward forces of the flying foil being pushed up into the mast, and seating it further up into the receiver, and why the screw(s) loosen and need to be tightened to take up that new "slack" of that shortened distance of foil in receiver.

I'm now riding an adapter in tracks w/o a Tuttle in the board because I really like the extra 3" of mast, and true or not...it "feels" to be more solid, but that could just be more confirmation bias on my part.  :-[ :)

Yeah, so same thing is happening to me, except it's so loose that I can see it flexing inside the tuttle. I can literally feel it cavating under me standing on it. So........I'm going to try and get a plate mount, in the meantime, has anyone shim'ed it with some foil tape to tighten it up?

Bill's suggestion of fender washers is a good one.  I also noticed that my foil shipped with different sized screws.  The longer ones leave room for movement but the slightly shorter ones did not have a problem.

Yeah, I don't think mine is from the screws it's not flexing back and forth, rather side to side. I put it in another board  (prone) and no issues, I think it's the tuttle itself on the JL from taking it on and off a ton, basically sanding it down. Any suggestions for thickening the tuttle so it fits snug? Foil tape was my thought

Foil SUP / Re: Learning foil pumping

Sharksupper - I know this is an old thread, but I'm exactly at the point where I took a bit of advice from this post by unweighting and staying high on the foil on the way back out. I have the exact same setup as you - JL 6'5 Flying-V, GL Maliko 200, 180 lbs, same waves everything. No issues getting extended rides as long as there's a wave to link to, and/or at spots where it's a long line linking several breaks (inlet break) How is this going and how does working the paddle in help with extending the pump back out?

We have a few spots where you can set a line and just glide on the foil, and a few inlet spots where it's just continual breaks, but I would love to be able to pump back out on beachbreaks.

I'm trying to get this down versus switching to the prone (I really still like being on the SUP).

Foil SUP / Re: Switch to Prone (Pros/Cons)
« on: May 02, 2021, 05:18:38 PM »
Yeah, checking back in on this post because I'm thinking about getting a prone foil setup. Now.........I get the whole size and being able to hold a bigger wave on a sup foil. That's most definitely not a problem for me, I'm in South Carolina on little knee to waist high waves. Don't feel that bad for me though, we have some great inlets and different spots that are a foil heaven.

So........taking wave size out of the equation, obviously easier to catch with a sup, and some of the longer paddles are easier with a sup. I'm thinking a mix of both possibly. I just feel like pumping back out, etc. will be easier on a prone.

74
Thanks, we have rented prone boards from there before. I'll check it out for a SUP. I think that there are a couple of SUP camps there as well. I wonder if they would do some type day package and rent a board and get us to a good break. I'll have to look them up and shoot an email or something.

Yeah, check with Chase at Blue Zone, they may, but it is probably dependent on if they have a camp that week or not. Nosara is really fun as you know, good break for a SUP too.

75
So just a quick note - I'm am ambassador for Ocean Rodeo, I haven't gotten into winging yet, but I have the Aluula kite, and it is hands down significantly better in every way (except cost). The biggest thing is how rigid and smooth everything is, better upwind, etc.
