I grew up there, really cool spot. Back then, I was on a longboard and would paddle across the inlet from the south end of WB to there to surf (or get a boat ride from someone when we were lucky). It sets up really nice on NE swell as the jetty takes all of the current out and the waves wrap around nicely.
I'm sure it would be a really easy paddle from WB on a SUP.

Had a fun week, got a rental from Olympus, rode right by the pier, everyone was friendly, not a lot of people out each morning, at least until about 745 when I had to go to work.

Yeah I wish I had time to go to San Onofre, but I have class from 830 to 4 everyday.

Old topic - but I'm headed there next week and would like to get a few mornings in with some surf. Any suggestions? I've contacted tarsan for a rental.

Reviving this thread as I'll probably head down there this fall. Looking for a board to buy to leave down there, something I can surf in the 8'5 - 9'0 range, 120 to 150L or so. Could go smaller if available.

sunova has several superior quality boards in your price in your price range
Yeah, I was going to say Sunova and check with Jim on here for a Fanatic Stylemaster, really sweet looking board, it's probably close to that range by now.

AP, you can use the FCS, GoPro Mount. Fab-up a right angle bracket out of fiberglass, CF, or aluminum. It will have to be offset so you can reach the set screw. You might get some miss-readings when you're hanging 10!
I wonder if it would also work in a board-short pocket?
I thought about the boardshort option since it's so small. Worth trying. I do know my SecureGPS watch had issues under my wetsuit, one because it is pretty big, and secondly it wouldn't sync. That ended up being it's downfall because if it had been under my wetsuit it wouldn't be at the bottom of the Atlantic.

Trace has cool functionality but they're fussy. Mine is frequently not charged when I want it to be even though I thought it was off. the battery doesn't last long. You have limited control over what it's recording unless you dig into the files and manipulated the data yourself. No, there's no calorie counting that I know of. I don't think it's a great training tool, it's more of a video editing tool, and it's not ideal for that yet. The manufacturer is still working on adding functions so it will improve, but for now I'd say kill to birds with one stone and replace the watch your wife got you.
Yeah, I e-mailed the owner and he said they added some feature sets lately, namely kiteboarding and jump height/distance which from the looks of the app appears to be working. I'm debating it, just worried that I don't have anywhere to mount it on my noserider.

For $1500 you could do a lot better IMO. Look at the Jimmy Lewis Black and Blue if you are into noseriding, love the board.

I love my Trace. Don't know about calorie counting - never counted them in the first place. The wave data seems pretty good and I know they are improving the app all the time. I thought about getting a Rip Curl watch but I don't want to have something hanging off my wrist and being tempted to read the data mid-session. I love pairing up the Trace after my session, checking the stats, and seeing how my friends do around the world. Only downside I can see is if you're into old school nose riding cause the little device is right there on the nose.
Sending you a PM too...
Yeah thanks for the PM, ironically enough, I just e-mailed them about noseriding. especially since my JL B&B has a full deck pad. I may pull the trigger, only issue is the Rip Curl SearchGPS (which I really did like) is on the bottom of the Atlantic and it was an anniversary gift from my wife. So, I somehow have to figure out how to skate through that one.

Yeah so I really liked mine until today where it came unfastened somehow during a kite session and is now on the seafloor in the Atlantic somewhere.
So........word to the wise, make sure the hasp is really secure. I swore mine was but I was body dragging a bit through a wind shadow and looked down and it was gone. I think the excess strap got out of the fastener and that was it.
Really sucks. Looking at the new Nixon watch that is coming out later this year, or buying a Trace.

My SecureGPS watch just ended up on the bottom of the Atlantic after a day of kiteboarding. Not sure what exactly happened, had to body drag a bit to grab my board on the inside because of a wind shadow, and next thing I know the watch is gone. I think the fasten beyond the hasp got undone and then the force of the water opened the latch.
In any case, thinking of getting a Trace to replace the watch. My wife got me a Fitbit watch so I'm good on a watch, but regarding the trace:
Any opinions on calorie counting? How well does it do for tracking waves?

I was thinking of heading up from Charleston. If you head south, skip MB and head down to Folly, I'd love to try a couple of Sunova boards.

So, the boring answer is conditions dictate it, but I will take your bait. I pretty much kite in anything over 10 knots, JL B&B in under waist high waves, Naish Hokua 8'8" X32 in everything else.
Now with that said, I have to say, my ideal morning is to wake up to a sunrise session with clean waist high bumps rolling in and the JL B&B getting noserides (or diligent attempts). It's just such a fun feeling and board, and I think from a getting the most out of a paddleboard vs. surfboard those are the best conditions to really maximize the advantages with a SUP from a positioning on a wave, paddle power, etc.

I sent Fitbit a message yesterday about using their band with SUP:
A lot of standup paddlers are interested in the Fitbit. It seems like a great way to measure effort. I know none of your models are waterproof, but will you be coming out with one soon? Also, will the Fitbit measure the specific arm movements specific to SUP?
Thanks!
I hope they send me an answer.
Cool yeah, I'm using kayaking as the closest reference, I think it's roughly 500 calories/hr. That's probably right for a medium-effort SUP surfing session for a hour. I'll adjust based on intensity.
