Foil SUP / Re: Extreme Foiling when #TooSmallToFoil then Go Foil
« on: June 14, 2021, 05:08:00 PM »
Do you pay attention to the tides? In my area ebbing tide really sucks for foiling but flowing tide seems to give boost to even the smallest of the waves.

Of course, depends on the spot, so as a rule - incoming tide is good for beachbreaks. Inlets are really the best for foiling here, and they generally like outgoing, especially as it's getting to low. Around high tide it's either really messy or just too much water to break, outgoing also acts like a escalator to take you back out after a long foil in. It's all seasonal too, but that's the general flow.

General Discussion / Re: Is anyone just SUP Surfing anymore?
« on: June 14, 2021, 05:03:20 PM »
Very simple,  I pick the best tool for the conditions, it just happens that foiling is better in a wider variety of conditions, here's the breakdown:

No waves/no wind = Work
Flat/Wind - Kite Foil
Waves below chest high/wind below 12 knots - Foil
Waves below chest high/wind 10-14 kts - Kite Foil
Waves (any size)wind >14 kts - Kite directional surfboard
Waves above chest high/no wind - SUP Surf
Waves knee high and not enough depth to foil - Longboard SUP

Thats about it.

Cool, yeah building a quiver it seems. I may try and sell the Maliko and try the GL240 down the road for my low end.

Still debating going smaller on the SUP, but.....right now I'm going to try and get some time in with the GL210 then decide.

Beasho - that M280 usage in shin to knee has me thinking - we have that a lot down here too in inlets. Where there's a little bump barely rideable on the Maliko, but long, long rides if you can get going. Second - can you PM me that location, I have a good friend that lives in CT and is into SUP foiling/winging, but I think he's going to the wrong spot constantly based on feedback.

Foil SUP / Re: Next wing after Maliko 200 - Progression
« on: June 13, 2021, 01:31:54 PM »
I will disagree. I have exactly the same setup and 210 was exactly my next wing. Yes it didnít have the same lift as maliko on my first 10 waves or so. But I quickly realized that I might have been too front foot heavy. Iíd say stick to it - ideally I would recommend to be on 17.5 flip tail (huge difference). Never needed any shims on my JL with Gofoils.

I could get the 17.5" flip tail, actually borrowing the 14.5" so I could switch it out. Going to switch back to Maliko tail for now. I felt too back foot heavy, but again, super margional waves, talking barely whitewater breaking in an inlet, knee high at best.

Thanks everyone, I should have known better than to change two variables at once, especially on a margional day. I'll go back to the Maliko tail, get some sessions in, and go from there. Maybe chop it down as well.

I will say as the session progressed (again, very, very marginal) I was able to get up on foil with a lot of pumping and it felt quick, just the initial lift felt like I was towing an anchor.

I'm going to look into that trim shim as well, has anyone else used this? I thought about going down to a smaller board/Flying-V, but for now, I'm only changing the single variable of M200 to GL 210 for now.

Got the GL210 with a 9.5" pedestal and a friend had a 14.5" flip tip tail. So......two questions:

1. I'm going from M200 with the standard tail.Should I try the GL210 with the standard tail first just to not change too many variables? Is the 14.5" flip tip big enough?

2. Is the orientation of the flip tip tail right? I know it's one way with the 6.5" pedestal and the opposite with the 9". I took it out today, in very small surf and it felt like I was fighting the tail, or plowing in the water.

It may just be something to get used to, or a lack of any sort of power/wave. By tiny, I mean really tiny, ankle-ish, fighting to not hit the bottom on take off type of deal.

Foil SUP / Re: Naish S26 95L - SUP
« on: June 10, 2021, 02:37:53 PM »
Appst,
I am supposed to have the S26 110L tomorrow. I want to standup paddle foil it. I know it will wing ding..
Im 160LBS.

Will report back on sup foil ability.

Cool, but I'm guessing 110L to 95L is a big jump (110 is what I have now).

Foil SUP / Naish S26 95L - SUP

Has anyone SUP foiled the S26 or S25, or frankly any SUP in that 95L range. I'm 175 lb/78kg, and I have a 6'5" 115L Flying-V right now, I love it but I think I could go smaller and gain some performance on the foil.

Any thoughts? Riding mostly mushy, knee to chest-ish east coast inlet waves.

Foil SUP / Re: Takuma TK series boards
« on: June 07, 2021, 05:39:11 PM »
I'm interested in jumping down in length/volume too. I'm on the JL Flying-V 6'5" and I love it but I know I can go smaller. No issues with stability even in a ton of chop and current. I've debated the 5'11" but the Naish at 95L and these Takuma's are interesting too. Anyone else dropping down in size/volume for strictly SUP (I'm not winging, still kiting).

Thanks everyone - will probably get both eventually, but for now I grabbed the 9.5" based on shop recommendation. I have a friend with the 6.5", so I may get used to it then switch it up.

Any opinion on the pedestal length 6.5 to 9.5"? Also, I have a flip tip tail that's a 14.5" from a friend, will that work with the GL210 on the GF 1.0 mast?

Classifieds / Sell/Trade - 6'5" JL Flying-V (Charleston, SC)
« on: May 30, 2021, 10:29:11 AM »
I'm just throwing this out there because it's proabably not worth shipping, so I'm in Charleston, SC. I basically want the smaller 5'11" Flying-V, so a trade or make an offer on selling. It has a few knicks and dings, but nothing too critical, great board, just want it with less volume/length.

Yeah, not into winging (yet), but I kite OR kites, have the 12m Aluula Roam. It's simply better at everything, as it should be to be honest.

Foil SUP / Re: My new Armstrong Foils
« on: May 27, 2021, 07:06:50 PM »
Old topic, but pretty interested in the 1550 as a step up from the Maliko 200, on a 6'5" Flying-V, no real plans to wing it (I still like kiting, ha.) Any thoughts on it, a lot of guys here have them and the construction does look top notch. Figure the 1550 V1 is under $2k now, ha not sure on the V2.

Thoughts?

Donít do it. Too small. Living in SC, leave the 1550 to proners. Grab the 1850 if you want Armstrong.

Good to know, I'm between the 1850 and GL210, I already have a GoFoil setup, was going to possibly buy a whole new mast/fuselage either way I go and sell the Maliko. I guess the other option is to just get a GL210 and keep the Maliko and swap wings or drop down to the GL180. Armstrong is intriguing, I like the construction
