Anyone that has switched from the 1.0 to 1.5 pedestal, did you stick with the tuttle/plate adapter or just go straight for the plate mount built-in. I'm guessing the 1.5 is stiffer, lighter, etc.?

I would just chop the Maliko tail for now and keep trying the 14 flip.  The chopped tail provides enough lift to help pop up out of the water and is not too big to still have fun and haul ass.

I think the 18 flat would be better for winging and would not mess with it now..
Focus on getting up on the new HA wings then move to the flat tails.

The first couple of times I rode my 14 flip in the surf I also felt like nothing was there. I quickly moved back to the chopped maliko. It was when I first winged on the 14 flip where I figured it out. It is so fast and it + the GL120 require just more forward board speed and dont/wont jump out of the water like the M200..

You can delay the inevitable with the Malkio Chopped, but the 14 flip is the tail for surf with GF for now.

Yeah, I mean......with the Maliko tail, I can get the GL210 going in basically nothing, I'm talking ankle to knee non-breaking shite, more efficient than the Maliko, almost the same lift. Put the 14 flip tip on and it feels like it's just pulling me backward when I'm pumping to start and I end up with way too much weight on the tail end. I know it's my technique, but.......even once going it's fidgety at best.

It's frustrating, has anyone worked with shimming the 14.5 flip for more lift?

Appst, I think the tail is right but I only have the short pedestal 14 flip.

One thing that I would recommend is to go back to whatever tail you are used to. The HA wing is so much different than the M200 that you will want some consistency. I would also say that the GL210 has less lift than the M200 and that you might benefit from a fat ass Maliko blue tail.

I have been running my GL210 with my Maliko Blue Chopped tail only.

I bought the 14 flip / Short pedestal and felt like I did not have anything to stomp against when trying to get to wing. Its like my back foot pushed down into the water more and I was not able to engage the foil. I know that as I progress the 14 flip will be awesome but I am just sharing my experience with the GL210.

This....is exactly what is happening to me. I swapped the tail mid-session this AM and absolutely hated the flip tail (I went back to the giant Maliko tail). So.....the question becomes.......chop the Maliko tail or 18" flat or what? It's like the back end is just sticking to the water and I'm not getting up or if I do it's a hell of a lot more effort than with the Maliko tail.

I'd just stick with the Maliko tail, but I'm about to sell that setup to a friend. Any thoughts?

Winging is a good idea because there's definitely a difference between the power and volume with kitefoiling to SUP. However, that's just more gear and more time before you get into SUP or prone, and less time kiting (if you really enjoy kiting). Which I still will take a session on a strapless surfboard over a foil any day of the week with a kite if the conditions are right.

I started on knee high jibberish waves, wear whatever safety equipment you feel comfortable with, but if you are in smaller non-critical, non-breaking waves I'm not sure gearing up for football is really needed. The foil isn't something to be careless around, but if you have kited, you pretty much know how to get away from it. As soon as you start to lose it.......bail......it's pretty straightforward.

Also - get a good leash I like the Dakine floating leash.

Agree with everything here, I was similar, I learned to foil on a kite. Except I was a pretty experienced SUP surfer (started a year or so ago foiling - and barely SUP surf now). I'll tell you picking up kitefoiling was pretty easy in comparision. Kitefoiling you don't have to think about generating speed to get up on foil, nor controlling much once on foil because you have a very controllable throttle. SUP will be easier, but......not as easy as kiting.

Another thing is, if you don't have great SUP form, I feel like foiling just points out weaknesses even more (foot placement, too long of a paddle, etc.)

Good luck it's way way more fun than kite foiling.

Yeah, I was similar, except a longboarder for forever, then just mostly kiting with a strapless surfboard, then to SUP and love it. Mainly because of where I live and the lack of waves with a ton of power.

I'm a bit lighter than you - 175 lbs. but my progression went from a 8'8" Naish Hokua X32, which I'm guessing is like the Quatro down to a 8'1" Jimmy Lewis Worldwide and it was a massive jump in performance, the drop to a 8'2" Supertech even more of a jump. The biggest thing is getting a thinner rail, but still being stable. I've ridden JP's, Sunova, F-One, Naish a ton of different boards and JL seems to be the most stable for it's size and best construction out there.

Also, think about if you want a more shortboard oriented board or something mid-length with some glide.

I'm in transition.  I recently got a wing foil. I had to sell two boards to pay for it so I'm down to just one SUP. I'm hoping to SUP surf on clean days, wing foil when it's windy, and possibly do some SUP foiling as well. I've heard that foiling can mess with your SUP surfing ability so we will see how that goes.

Two beginner sessions in on the foil and now the wind has died with no wind in the forecast. Very little surf to speak of either. For times like this, I have an electric skateboard as backup.

Foiling absolutely messed with my SUP surf ability, just because of the different volume distribution on the board, the muscle memory taking off on a foil, etc. Of course, I pretty much went full-on foil and maybe SUP surfed 5 times out of 100 sessions in the last year.

I have the Naish Carbon ultra at  95 liter - I'm 190 pounds, and its pretty stable to SUP on. A bit slow to accelerate under paddle, but not bad, great once its on foil. Feels less swing than I thought...

My deck cracked under the front foot after 2 months, for no reason that I know of and Naish denied it was a warranty issue. Minor repair, but not what I would have expected from a top brand - but other than that its a fun board.

I tried it, and I'm not sure if it was the one I was on or what, but it was basically the same weight as my JL at 115L. That was my main reasoning for going down, less swing weight. Factor in the weight along with less glide and it really wasn't worth it. Holding out for a 5'11" JL, I still want it to be fairly comfortable to paddle long distances on (out to inlets).

I ended up going out for a super windy session yesterday afternoon and measured my paddle from the 'normal' height I've been keeping it at. 80" from the tip of the blade to the top of the handle, which as been working well for me so far, I've been finding that the blade size isn't great in the water on those windy days because it'll grab so much water when trying to drag myself through the wind.

I'm fairly hesitant to go down to 71" or 72" because when I've tried 75"/76" length it ended up making my lower back/hips/legs fairly cranky because of how far I had to bend down/forward to get the blade in the water and to not have the blade slip/gurgle. I'll prob try 77" here in a bit to see how that goes, but so far shoulder stuff hasn't been too much of a limiting factor for me, even in 2-3hr surf sessions or 10 mile flat water trips. I've only been doing this for like 2 months now so I'm sure I still have a long way to go as far as fitness and conditioning for SUP, but being in good shape already does help. I find my quads/glutes/core tend to give up on me long before my shoulders do, lol.

Regarding shaft diameter, I'll look at some of the smaller ones, but I suspect a standard size one will be the right call because I have long fingers and I already have a relaxed and controlled grip (yay for all those years spent in an outrigger canoe!). I will look into different shaft stiffness though because I can see that having a pretty significant impact in fatigue on long sessions or sessions where we paddle for a couple miles of ocean chop to get to a break.

Yeah, to help with the length, just think, bending your knees, not your back. Your knees should be pretty bent, so in actuality you at 5'11" is more like 5'5" or so.

Hey y'all, as a fairly new SUP paddler (not new to paddling though, I have a bunch of years under my belt in seat #6 in an OC6...) I'm finding myself annoyed at my adjustable paddle that constantly wants to adjust its length through the course of a session (flat water or surf) so I'm starting to look at better, fixed length options. I've found around a 78" long paddle works for me, but I'll have to double check that. It also has like a 93^2 blade as well.

I'll be trying to hit up two local SF bay area places that do a lot of SUP type demos to see what they have, but I want to start narrowing down blade size size, shaft length, stiffness, etc, before I start demoing stuff...
We had a bunch of factors that went into the OC6 paddles, but it seems like SUP paddles are a lot more sensitive to individual factors than outrigger canoe paddles are. Ideally I'd like to get a high quality paddle that I can use for both surf and flat water stuff, but I do understand that I might have to pick one due to the general differences in length that tend to be "Optimal" for each discipline. I suspect I'll prob want to drop the blade size down from the 90's to the 80's, but I haven't had issues with this size so far.

About me: 5'11", 180lbs female, I have long legs and arms, but I don't really have a slender build, I'm more of a muscular, athletic build. Generally strength isn't an issue for me in activities like this, lol. I have a few decades of mountain biking and semi-pro racing so I've been fortunate to be able to keep a fair bit of strength even as I'm recovering from shoulder surgery 8mo ago, I had a SLAP repair, Bankart repair and like 6 anchors to repair it after re-injuring it following a MTB crash a few years ago, dislocating it. This then ended up manifesting itself as a super unstable shoulder that'd dislocate every week or so. Fun! So I started SUP to try to get the back/shoulder strength back a bit because honestly I'd rather do this than being stuck in a gym. 

Anyways, hit me with some rec's for mfg's, blade styles etc. I've done a fair bit of research so far, and tried a few of the really high end black project paddles but those seem like they required a higher stroke cadence than I'm comfortable/able to do.

Smaller blade will help with shoulder stress (trust - I used a big 95 sq in. blade and ended up getting active release therapy to get my shoulders back right). Go much shorter - 71 to 72" (head or 1" OH). Bend your knees, use your legs and core.

Also, check Werner Rip Stick - I have the thinner shaft which I believe is catered to women, but it helps to loosen my grip on it because a lot of the shoulder stress came from gripping the paddle too tightly.

People have a ton of opinions on this, but honestly, a surf-specific paddle - it's probably more about getting the proper height and blade size more than brand or anything else. I went through Kialoa, KeNalu, Hippostick you name it, and it all came down to getting the proper blade size (smaller than you would think - 79 sq in) and the right length (head high).

I've had no issues since I got those things right. The biggest problem I see with SUP surfers and it's even worse when they get on foils is having a paddle that is too long and a blade that is too big. You need a quick stroke to inititate speed for waves, and you need to have the right length so you can properly lower your body/center of gravity.
