Foil SUP / First Foil Setup Thoughts
« on: January 02, 2020, 02:02:09 PM »
Ok, so a bit of background, I'm 38, 170 lbs and I've been SUP surfing for about 5 years. My primary boards are the 7'6" x 29" JL SuperFrank (100L) and the 8'2 SuperTech (102L). I have no issues at all paddling either, could probably go down a bit more. I'm on the east coast in crappy, mushy waves.

So, my plan was to basically learn to foil with kiteboarding, I've kited for over 10 years and figured it would be way easier to learn with a kite and plenty of power than on a SUP. This proved to be correct, it was pretty easy, pretty much riding with no issues after a few equipment malfunctions, and after probably a dozen sessions I'm confident with riding toeside, etc.

Back to SUP - I want to get into SUP foiling as there are others (mostly prone though) getting into it here and showing that it's completely doable in our waves. I have a deal on a GoFoil Maliko(200) and the iwa(170) with a tuttle mount and 24" mast. I'm looking at the 5'11" JL Flying-V, any thoughts? I want to go as short as possible as I think a lot of the issues with guys around here on SUP's is the board is too long and it's too awkard to balance on.

Open to suggestions, again I don't need a perfect foil, just want to get going.

I love this paddle, the issue is I'm a bit scared to cut it based on how the Werners are fitted and the fact that it's epoxyed together. I got it a inch overhead because of the smaller blade, over time, I've figured out it still needs to be a 1" under my forehead. So, basically for 2 inches I need to make an adjustment one way or the other.

If anyone is interested, I can send pics, etc.

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Delta - Baggage Fee Waived
« on: July 18, 2019, 06:57:06 AM »
For anyone who flies Delta a lot - no fee for surfboards/SUP's anymore. They still have the 113 linear inch requirement, but I've never had that enforced on me, hopefully that doesn't change.

SUP General / SUPBoarder Pro
« on: December 21, 2018, 03:43:22 AM »
Just wanted to let everyone know - I've found this site incredibly helpful for progression in SUP, reviews, etc. It's based out of the UK, but he does a wide range of discussions on SUP surf, race, etc.

https://www.supboardermag.com/

I paid for the pro access a year ago, not bad, something like $30, and you get a free shirt out of the deal. Lots of good content, and he has surf breakdowns for technique from user-provided videos, etc.  Nice guy, very helpful and responsive if you e-mail him. Worth giving a look.

Gear Talk / SUP Travel Packing Tips - 2 Boards
« on: December 11, 2018, 07:40:11 AM »
I'm heading to CR in a month, and I'm debating 3 things actually:

1. Taking 2 boards - 7'6" JL Super Frank, and 8'8" JL SuperTech (if it's a typical forecast of waist/chest most days and a few bigger head high+ days)
2. Taking just the 8'8", it's more oriented for steeper waves
3. Taking just the 7'6" SF, because I feel like I can ride it more aggressively.

So, I have a 8'8" Riviera bag, I've used it before with the SuperTech and basically it fits with a board sock around the SuperTech, and some pool noodles around the nose/tail parts of the rails for support. I put both boards in and it fits, but it's tight thickness wise. I doubt I'd be able to get a lot of padding around the SuperTech nose/tail. Any suggestions from someone who's travelled with 2 SUP's in a single bag, or should I just take a single board and keep it simple.

Classifieds / WTB/Trade Jimmy Lewis SuperTech 8'8" for 8'3 or 7'11"
« on: November 18, 2018, 06:42:46 PM »
Just throwing this out there in case someone is interested. I have the 8'8" JL SuperTech and love it, but I think I could go a bit smaller now that I've lost a bit of weight. If anyone wants to discuss a swap for the 8'8" or have a 8'3" or 7'11" for sale, PM me.

Gear Talk / Wetsuit Suggestions - Mix of SUS and Kiteboarding
« on: November 10, 2018, 11:48:13 AM »
I'm in need for a new 4/3 or 5/3 basically for everything my 3/2 doesn't cover, which is typically late December to mid-February (upper 40's to mid-50's water temps). Just curious on a few things:

-I've typically used Rip Curl/O'Neill suits, I had one kite-specific suit with more smooth skin on the chest to block wind better, but.......frankly I'm paddling more in the winter. Any thoughts on surf-specific vs. others.

-Integrated hood or not? I need a hood, I've tried the neoprene beanie, and as soon as I have to dive under a wave it's done. So, I'm either getting an integrated hood or regular hood.

-Ideally it would dry quickly and be flexible/light.

I'm not trying to spend a fortune (Patagonia range - $500 or so), but a solid suit that will last.

Hawaii / Kauai in July - SUS suggestions
« on: September 19, 2018, 02:14:45 PM »
Thinking about escaping the summer doldrums next summer and heading to Kauai for a week. I've been to Maui/Oahu already and my wife really wants to go to Kauai. I'm a fairly experienced SUP surfer, comfortable in overhead Costa Rica waves, etc.

I know it's going to be the south swell season, and I'm looking at staying in Poipu, probably bring my own gear. Any suggestions on where to go/not go, normal swell size (proportioned to an East Coast surfer, i.e. your waist high is my head high).

Any other suggestions on flat water paddles, etc. probably do a good bit of hiking, tourist type stuff too.

Gear Talk / Suggestions on 2 SUP Travel Bag
« on: September 04, 2018, 10:09:49 AM »
I'm taking my usual trip to Costa Rica in January, and I'm pondering taking two boards depending on conditions, my 8'8" JL SuperTech (better in steeper/bigger surf) and my 7'6" JL Super Frank Lean (fun in slower surf, and I just love having a smaller SUP if the waves allow).

Any suggestions on a travel bag? Right now, I have the Riviera 8'8" bag which fits my SuperTech well, but I'd be a bit worried to try and fit the Super Frank in with it, although I may go try it just to see how it would work. I've travelled with the SuperTech and a kite setup before with no issues.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Strength Training Thoughts
« on: August 23, 2018, 07:22:31 AM »
I'm 37 years old and in fairly good shape, 6'0, 175 lbs. or so. I eat fairly well, I go with 1/3 veggies, 1/3 protein, 1/3 complex carbs each meal basically with protein shakes and/or nuts, fruit for snacks. I'll have a crazy meal once or twice a week, drink once or twice a week.

5:30 AM - wakeup, check/pray for surf, no surf - gym for 45 minutes. I typically do some sort of muscle group 5-6 days/week if there's no surf.
3:30-4 PM - check wind, if windy (basically 5 days/week the whole spring and summer) - kite, if not, I typically do some form of cardio 3-5 days/week (30 min) - cycling, flatwater paddle, etc.

So, I'm hitting a bit of a plateau, where I'm looking for new workout plans, or just a general mix of what I typically do. My goal, has most of us have, is to be able to surf as long as possible both in terms of hours in the water/session/week, etc. and longevity. I want to be the guy surfing at 90.

My question for the group is, what have you found works for you. Whether it's a mix of traditional strength training with SUP mixed in. A mix of cycling, swimming, running, etc. mixed with SUP, or just straight paddling all of the time.

I'm contemplating either limiting my strength training to 3 days/week which would probably be 2 days of legs/core, 1 day of upper body, and mixing in more paddling, maybe some swimming (in the summer), cycling, etc. The bottom line is I work a desk job, so I have to do something everyday or at least 6 days a week or I go stir crazy.

Foil SUP / Kite into SUP Foil
« on: August 08, 2018, 06:09:09 AM »
I'm wondering if anyone in this forum has started off with a kite-foil and then moved on to SUP. If I'm going to to get into foil, that's my progression, I"m a very capable kiter at this point (10 years, mostly strapless surfboard now). A lot of my kite buddies are migrating over to the foil for light wind/flat spells. So, if anyone has gone this route, what did you start with, did you keep the mast, etc. and just swap out for larger/better wing/fuselages later for SUP?

Gear Talk / Another fin thread
« on: May 17, 2018, 11:39:54 AM »
I'd love to try different fin setups constantly, but it's rare we have consistent enough waves to get a good test. In any case, I'm working with 2 boards, a 7'11" F-One Madeiro and 8'8" JL Supertech, both futures setup. The Madeiro is a quad and I like it, no problems, running GL-2 Lopez. The SuperTech I ride in generally anything that's not waist-chest and clean (so when it's big and when it's rough). Anything waist high and below, I"m typically on a noserider.

Anyways, I started off by riding the Supertech in a thruster setup with the stock JL honeycomb 4.5" fins. I switched to a quad just to see speed wise how it would perform, and obviously it's a decent bit quicker. I have SearchGPS data to correspond, it's typically 1.5/2 MPH quicker on average on a wave. The problem is, I like how I can torque the tail more (or so it seems) with the thruster. So, what would be the best solution:

- Try different fins (possibly smaller all-around) on the thruster setup
- Upgrade fins to something?
- Quad with a nub?
- Say hell with it and just ride.

Gear Talk / Surfing - Paddle Shape/Angle
« on: May 11, 2018, 04:33:59 AM »
I've had basically 2 paddles so far - a Kenalu Ho'oloa 95 and Hippostick Al Pro (89 sq in). I've been riding them back to back this week since I went away from the Ho'oloa for awhile because my shoulder was acting up (it was actually something else causing it, paddling just exacerbated it). The shapes are a bit different, the Kenalu is a bit longer in the blade.

So - I'm wondering what is the consensus on what makes a good blade shape for surfing. There's a few surfing-specific paddles on the market (Werner Rip Stick, etc.) but I'm not sure if that's hype or if the shape/blade angle make it more apt to work when your form breaks down.

Any opinions? This is taking into fact that a smaller blade and paddle length somewhere between nose and a few inches above the head are optimal.
