Foil SUP / Next Foil Setup Help- SUP/Wing (Gofoil)
« on: March 06, 2023, 04:36:12 AM »
Debating grabbing a new wing, here's my progression (mostly all SUP so far, getting into winging, I already kite so I've been a bit slow to migrate to winging, but it's coming):

First board/foil: JL Flying-V 6'5", Maliko 200 - great to learn on, used for a year or so
Second board/foil: King's 5'7", 105 L, Gofoil GL 210 - 210 was a nice progression, King's board was great for about 3 months until the POS delam'ed. I'm still not happy about it.
Current board/foil: Kalama 5'2, 105 L, Gofoil PNL185

I'm getting solid runs with the PNL185, longest waves in the 2 minute range, I can kinda connect waves, but for the most part I'm riding in an inlet or on a series of waves I can connect without going back out the back. I need to work on pumping back out, but.....I've been slack. The PNL185 has the wingtips cut off, and I'm on the Gofoil 1.5 Pedestal at 29". I figure it's time to look at what's out there, that might carve a bit better. The PNL185 is pretty good once you get used to it, it just gets skiddish at times on turns, it's not as locked in, nor should it be based on design.

I'm leaning towards the GT1400.

I'm 180 lbs, mostly in knee to chest high, weak EC surf.

General Discussion / 4/3 Wetsuit - 2023?
« on: December 23, 2022, 07:43:17 AM »
I busted out my 4/3 for the first time yesterday, Rip Curl Flashbomb No Zip, loved the suit. Got out today......full of leaks. It seems like it's always around my knees and inner legs where the knee patches are, and then with the no zip - a bit around the chest as that part loses it's tension after awhile.

Any suggestions on a new suit?

I'm looking at O'Neill Blueprint or Psychotech, Patagonia R3 (mainly because of the lifetime warranty) Manera, and Mystic. I'm not worried about the cost as long as it lasts more than a season and a half. I'm mostly SUP foiling, kiteboarding, winging eventually. Figure that I'm spending quite a bit of time going from my butt to my knees/feet, because I'm on a 5'2 foilboard, so........there's a lot of up and down.

Foil SUP / Kalama E3 - 5'2" 105L
« on: September 06, 2022, 04:47:00 PM »
Looking at the Kalama E3, current/last board was is 5'8" 105L, 28" wide, zero stability issues. I'd keep riding it, but.....there's some build issues there. I'm around 80kg, mostly knee to waist high inlet surf, I'm not on perfectly clean waves, but......I'd rather go as small as I can get away with.

Anyone else tried this board?

General Discussion / Jeep Wrangler (JL) 2 Door - SUP Foil storage?
« on: September 02, 2022, 07:54:45 PM »
I've had a 4 door Jeep (JK and now JL) since '06, I'm debating getting a 2 door Jeep Wrangler (JL) just because I've never had one, no kids, basically only need the storage for kite/sup gear.

So my current setup is Yakima Gutter rails on a hard top, same would apply for a 2 door, I'm only 6 miles to the beach so no issues in the fall/winter. The remainder of the year I go with no top or a bikini top, and my foil/foilboard fit perfectly fine with the seats down in my 4 door. My question is.......I'm mostly on the 5'8" SUP foil, I'm wondering with roughly 4' between the front seat and rear tailgate (without rear seats - I would remove them), will the board be ok sticking out on the tailgate a bit, beside the foil. I'm not sure there's enough room given the width for the roll bars.

The other option is to just ratchet strap it to roll bars (which is what I'll do for my longboard) and keep rolling. Any thoughts?

Foil SUP / Dave Daum - King's Foil (Basically perfect)
« on: June 09, 2022, 03:44:38 AM »
I've been holding off making a review on a 5'8" 104L King's SUP Foil that Dave Daum made for me back in November to get a full range of conditions, a few different foils, etc. I also literally stepped on an oyster shell on the first session with it, so I was out of the water roughly 3 weeks while that healed (straight through my 4th/5th toes). Anyways, the whole experience was great, discussion on what exactly I was looking for, communications from Dave and his wife, etc.

Sizing: I'm 6' between 175-180 lbs typically, riding east coast mush/inlet waves, basically perfect for SUP foil.
Previous Board: 6'5" 115L JL Flying-V, great board to learn on, but 115L was too much to progress any further on.
I talked with Dave about sizing quite a bit, I wanted to keep some float for shorter period, inlet type bumps where some stability is needed. I tried in my progression down - a 95L wing board, it was fun once up, but just too tippy to be practical. We settled on 5'8" around 104L.

Construction: Perfect, carbon distributed through, solid box, no issues, very light. Weighed in around 13 lbs upon arrival.

Stability: It's a different shape than the JL, tucked in nose, but keeps the width. I've had no issues, honestly, I could have gone smaller probably, maybe like a 5'4" or so around 100L, but it's been extremely stable in all conditions.

Ride: Love it, the nose shape handles any sort of deeper dips/dives I might take. The length has come down to where I feel like I can make tighter turns/ that just weren't possible and it feels just all-around more agile. Dropping almost a foot and 10L will do that. Foil placement I've played around with a bit, but I feel like unlike the JL where I was almost always all the way forward (probably bc of the volume), dead center on this setup is typically best. I'm on a GL210 setup, I'm going to try the PNL and maybe check out the new GoFoil stuff soon.

Durability - I'm not easy on boards, and knock on wood, no issues so far.

Overall - if you are looking for a custom SUP foil sized to your specifications at a very reasonable price compared to the market, give Dave a call. Also, thanks to Califoilia for some tips on sizing/construction for Dave.

Foil SUP / Naish S26 95L - SUP
« on: June 10, 2021, 10:25:22 AM »
Has anyone SUP foiled the S26 or S25, or frankly any SUP in that 95L range. I'm 175 lb/78kg, and I have a 6'5" 115L Flying-V right now, I love it but I think I could go smaller and gain some performance on the foil.

Any thoughts? Riding mostly mushy, knee to chest-ish east coast inlet waves.

Classifieds / Sell/Trade - 6'5" JL Flying-V (Charleston, SC)
« on: May 30, 2021, 10:29:11 AM »
I'm just throwing this out there because it's proabably not worth shipping, so I'm in Charleston, SC. I basically want the smaller 5'11" Flying-V, so a trade or make an offer on selling. It has a few knicks and dings, but nothing too critical, great board, just want it with less volume/length.

Foil SUP / Next wing after Maliko 200 - Progression
« on: May 22, 2021, 02:06:20 AM »
So.......I'm a year in on the Maliko 200, confident riding in mostly knee to waist high, occasional waist/chest day (East Coast US waves). I'm not pumping back out the back great yet, but making some progress, but no issues linking waves and getting longer rides (45 seconds, etc.)

I'm debating going prone or staying with the SUP and maybe progressing to a high aspect wing. I'd like to try something with a bit more speed, but without losing the smaller wave lift of the Maliko 200. I also have a Gen 1 GoFoil mast that might be showing it's age a bit with some flexing.

So, any suggestions on going to the GL210, or what? If it's everyone's experience that gradual switch to prone just because of the lower volume is the biggest progression, I may go that route, but damn I still love hoping on the SUP. There's a few reasons the SUP is a better choice on some of our breaks (longer paddle often against some current to inlet breaks, gutless waves, and the occasional snipping at your heels).

Any thoughts?

Foil SUP / Switch to Prone (Pros/Cons)
« on: February 14, 2021, 04:37:02 AM »
I'm sure this has probably been asked before, but I didn't see any direct threads. I'm pretty comfortable SUP foiling, started this summer and it's pretty much taken over my surfing. I'm mostly on a mushy inlet break, but occasionally work in a beach break. Anyways, I'm debating adding a prone setup. I haven't popped up on a surfboard since I was 16 or so (and wasn't that good then), but with the added volume and the fact that I'm actually in better shape now than I probably was then, figured I could try.

For people that made the switch, pros/cons? I'm figuring catching waves the advantage is on SUP, I also feel like I can hold on the shoulder and navigate steeper waves on a SUP. The advantage on the prone being less volume, so easier to initiate carves, and nothing in your hands which in my mind would help pumping out the back.

Anyone who's made the switch have any opinions? Keep in mind, I've been only SUP surfing for the last 8 years or so, Costa Rica, Fiji, whatever.

Great board, I took the deck pad off just because I like wax better. Love this board, but....need room for the SUP Foil, 7'6" x 29-1/2", 100L. Pretty stable for my 175 lbs, good for mushy, east coast surf.

Let me know if you have any questions, I'm in Charleston, SC, no shipping.

Foil SUP / JL Flying-V 6'5" and GL Maliko 200
« on: May 15, 2020, 04:02:43 AM »
Finally got out on my first session with the Flying-V and a GoFoil Maliko 200 setup. Background far as foil, no boat, learned with a kite pretty easily. Obviously kite foiling is a lot easier because of the control of power, etc, but at least I know the weight transfer and general feeling of foiling. I've been kitefoiling for about 8 months (probably 25 sessions or so). I'm 6', 175 lbs for reference.

Jimmy Lewis Flying-V Overview:
-First off, great looking board, I expect it from JL, but man, it's a cool looking board. Foot placement markings are really helpful.
-I'm glad I went with 6'5", it's a bit of a struggle to get going to begin with, but getting my feet in the right spots over the foil is really easy because of the length.
-Plenty of volume/stability.

So, overall I got up on two waves in roughly a hour and a half, one ride was pretty long - 400' according to my watch, and it was basically gliding on whitewater, really worked on keeping it down, so I was probably 9" or so off the water, but smooth glide. The GL 200 as I got a bit used to it on take offs seems to be pretty forgiving on not being exactly centered. Foiling on this small of a SUP is pretty exhausting as well, as with anything you are learning, it's a lot of getting your muscles/body used to it. Long story short, I don't think it will take a ton of time to get to flying on a normal basis, but perfecting it will take some time. I'll keep reporting back, I definitely see some SUP's getting sold because of foiling.

Looking for a foil setup, preferably with shaft/complete as I already have one setup for kiting that I would rather keep just for kiting.
