I have been paddling for about three years now and my balance is so so. I have no problem with cross chop, downwinding conditions, etc.. However, when it comes to cutting across waves that are 2 ft high or so in a downwinding condition, I find it very difficult to keep my balance and it takes a lot of energy to stay on the board. Does anyone have any tips ?
Thanks

I found this blog today which I think this forum may find interesting. It is of a guy who is making a SUP trek from Anacortes, Wa to Glacier Bay, Alaska. Three month trip covering over 1340 miles. The SUPer is Jonathan and he posts daily his adventure. The link is to his blog is: http://www.wildhaunts.com/

A friend of mine went DW yesterday and I tried out his new Naish 14 ft Glide Wood. For DW, I am using a C4 Vortice, but after trying out the Naish 14 ft Glide, I was sold on it. It picked up the bumps very easily and glided like crazy. Before I run out to buy one, I would like to hear from folks what they think is the best DW board available. I am looking for a strict DW since my Bark Dominator fits the bill for flat/choppy conditions.

I was wondering if I could get any input if fin design makes much of a difference in DWing ? My Bark Dominator comes with the standard fin which is swept aft and about 9- 10 inches long. My Vortice came with a 11 inch shark type fin that has no sweep. The Vortice seems to have more directional stability in the waves then the Dominator. Wondering if the fin is partially responsible for this action besides the design of the board.

Went downwinding yesterday which was just crazy. 40-50mph wind with bigger gust. I do not plan on going into those conditions again primarily due to controlling the board when you get it out of the water. The board turns into an airplane wing in those conditions and that is what happened to my new Bark Dominator. It smashed against some rocks and caused the damaged seen on the attached photos. I was wondering if I could get any input on what you would recommend in repairing the damage. There doesn't appear to be any puncture damage.

Has anyone tried out the C4 14 foot V1 racer ? I was wondering how it compares with the C4 Vortice and Vortice XP for downwinding. It sounds like a nice board but not a lot of reviews.

I was interested in hearing a response from Puget Sound SUPers and others who DW in cold water and what safety precautions you use. Yesterday was quite a day for DWing. Afterwards, I heard a report of a kayaker missing in this weather so it made me think about what safety precautions one should take while participating in this sport. Below are some things I do for safety but would appreciate any input or suggestions:
1 - Wear a kayaking PFD 2 - Use a leash at all times 3 - Carry waterproof/floating VHF radio 4 - Carry waterproof cell phone with float 5 - Whistle 6 - Wear a farmer john wetsuit with booties and glove - Anything below +40 degrees F, I wear a full wetsuit. (I get extremely hot in a full wetsuit while paddling with temps above 40) 7 - Paddle with another person in DWing conditions (the person I paddle with does not wear a PFD or wetsuit of any kind)
Also - in the Puget Sound/Seattle area, are there any good safety/rescue classes that pertain to SUPing that you would recommend.
Thanks

I was wondering if anyone has purchased the new Surftech Bark Dominator. Wondering about the stability, speed in flat and choppy water as well as downwind capability. The 27 1/2 inch width has me concerned about stability.

I was on a short trip with my wife and stayed in Hood River for a couple of nights. No board with me but the river looks great for downwinding. I plan on coming down there again in the next couple of months and plan on doing some paddling. Would anyone have some pointers where to launch and any other bits of info.
I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year.

Has anyone tried out the new C4 boards - Switchblade and the V1 ? I was wondering how they perform versus the other displacement hulls. Tried a Ron House 12-6 and a 404 12-6 and found them to be real fast and stable.

It is time for me to get a new board for my quiver. The Vortice was just too slow for the Round the Rock race so it got me thinking of buying a race board for the conditions I experienced during the race. Chop, wind and small waves and a little downwinding. I would like a fairly stable board but fast. Would like to get some input and advice from you guys. Thanks

I would like to get some input from folks on this forum. I have been training for the Round the Rock race which will be occurring this coming Sunday (12 Sep). It is 13 miles long. I have not raced such a long race before but am practicing by putting in 6-7 mile paddles every other day and a 10 miler once a week in Puget Sound. Little concerned about the 13 miles but think I can make it. Any suggestions on how often to stop for water ? I have noticed after an hour of non-stop paddling, I get pretty dehydrated. Also - how hard does one push themselves at the start ?
Thanks

Need some input on what is the fastest board available today for racing in smooth to moderate wave conditions. A friend of mine is really getting into racing and is wondering what would be the best. He is looking at spending between $2k to $2.5K.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for installing tie-down lugs on the upper surface of a C4 Vortice BW ? I want to make sure I do not mess up the board.
