The Shape Shack / Re: Reseating leash plug
« on: April 09, 2024, 12:22:54 PM »
Thanks.

Definite food for thought.

I actually think that the balsa idea could end up being simpler - my concern with other ideas is making sure the hole is fully filled. I’m pondering cutting a round balsa plug which would essentially just make a massive leash plug.

The cracked deck could just be removed with balsa rather than trying to patch it.

Whichever method I go for, I am concerned about strength. Mostly because I don’t want it to pop out and cut short a session again. I had to borrow a board from friends for the last two sessions last week but the next time I’m away, I have no spare options so will be taking resin and fibreglass with me!!

The Shape Shack / Reseating leash plug

Morning!

I’ve just had the leash plug rip out of my 10’ SUP. I’m looking to reset it but need some advice please.

I’ve made a couple of hollow wood boards before so have resin and fibreglass plus a bit of experience.

This board is eps and I think I need to cut a new piece out to drill a fresh hole for the plug as it seems too spacious in there to just reglue.

I’m in the uk and trying to find a small piece of suitable grade eps or other foam seems impossible. I have no local shapers else I would ask if they could spare an off cut.

I’m wondering about cutting a block of balsa and fitting that then drilling a hole in that for the plug. All glued and glasses in and over.

Do you think that’s a suitable plan?

I’ve seen about gap filling using expanding foam but as this takes such a pounding I figure solid is better!

I'm just curious if anyone has ever made a hot curl style SUP.

I don't want one but I was just thinking about it as part of idle thoughts when driving back from the beach.

Does anyone know?

Thanks!

Looking good!

Only reason to go for a 10" box is to give you options later. If you're happy with the shorter, you'll be fine.

I would echo the view to go as thin as possible. You can always glass the inside for more strength if needed. I had my first board on the thicker end, thinking I could sand it down thinner but didn't. It ended up a fair old weight!

The fin boxes won't last and it will leak around the handle after a few outings.

Why is that? Is it because of the lack of extra glass lining the pocket?

Well done!

One to be proud of.

Looks cracking!

I had popped over here for the first time in a while in the hope to find inspiration on a shorter SUP suitable for river surfing. I had given up looking and have just been browsing around - this looks like it could be great for it!

How jealous am I on that water & weather? (I'm in the UK so a bit chilly!)

Is the orange a self build too?

General Discussion / Re: Filling a gouge in SUP-help needed

Here's a couple videos that helped me change my methods for filling foam holes, and gouges...

https://youtu.be/UgZ3A3igBbY

https://youtu.be/LM-txMeTjPo

The great thing about making foam this way, is that it's stronger than the 1 or 1.5 lb EPS foam in your board as Beasho calculated as roughly equivalent to 4 lb foam in the second video. Also, its expansion as exhibited in the first clip allows it to find all of the little voids that Q-cell or microballons won't reach for better adhesion.

So you just use the gorilla glue as foam?

Live model here.

I modified my 30 day death estimate to use exponential smoothing.  In other words you can't go EXPONENTIAL forever.  Brings down the 30 day estimate to 46K.

New State Heatmap shown here.  What states are performing WELL as measure by Days to Double and Which are NOT performing well.

NY, LA are emerging from the high burn phase.  Although NY now has more cases than any other SINGLE country (~ same as Spain).

Anyway to break Europe down into individual countries? Italy is on it's own. It would be interesting to see all the other countries split out as they're quite varied.

I do a fair bit of canal paddling, and in fact you'll paddle past me on your way down as my local canal is part of the grand union.

You should find it fairly simple going. Portaging is no big issue, though there can be a few in quick succession.

For insurance, advice is always go with BCU for the simplest option. To be honest, I've never been challenged as to if I have any and neither has anyone I know.

I'll be honest, I've not read any replies to this thread.

I just want to suggest you look into barefoot/minimalist/zero heel drop shoes.

I broke my L1 vertebrae all the way through in '99 after a 30' rock climbing fall. Back pain for years after. An acquaintance suggested barefoot shoes and in one week of trying, the pain had gone. It's all to do with heel striking pushing the pain straight through the spine or the forefoot acting as a shock absorber.

Have a read up and/or message me about it if you like. See what you think. It might help you. It changed my life.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Sledgehammer training....
« on: January 19, 2020, 01:17:38 PM »
Always mindful of how different walks of life can intersect with others....

Earlier was re-reminded about sledgehammer training.

I knew someone years ago who had acquired a tractor tyre and used to hit it with a sledgehammer. At the time, I thought he was bonkers. Now, I'm wondering if it could help with dry land SUP training. I've had days of digging tons of sand out of bags and thinking the same thing at the time.

There are more suggestions than just hitting a tyre with a sledgehammer that falls in the category.

Anyone got any thoughts or experiences?
