That’s great Clay, you really look like you’re enjoying it and in control. It’s a different world in a foil isn’t it ?

Have surfed Bondi since around 73, it’s always crowded, maybe a few small breaks are isolated in the early AM but it’s a small beach and there’s 50 people paddling out in the dark every morning. It’s not the place to foil unless it’s winter and blowing a gale. This ban would cover all craft with foils, prone, SUP, kite, bodyboard.

The Signature Albatross Downwind foils have a very narrow chord...... but I found it has a pretty small seeet spot balance wise.
Whether foiling/surfing or just standing upright, the forces are vertically inline and aligned. When you lean, and despite the centripetal forces, there’s always the constant of gravity. As you lean further, the centre of balance moves further out to the side putting more pressure out to that side. You can check this by standing up and leaning to one side. One foot takes more weight despite the same contact area. On a foil it means that area across the span will dictate the balance when turning. If you reduce the fitting capabilities of the wing tip by changing the foil, area , AOA or chord and an/dihedral, it will change the lift as you turn. This foil has a very small wingtip so it’s exactly as Piros said that it has a small sweet spot because there’s not a lot of lift out on the wingtip.

Thanks for the information Clay and what an effort to edit all those clips together too. That’s commitment to sharing. Edit: searching for the Garmin, I found there’s several versions. Is yours this model ? Im not enjoying the Trace.
Thanks, Brett.

Clay, It’s very easy to listen to you, whether you’re going from a script or not I don’t know. What the system you use that displays the angles and board information ? And your board looks like it has skinny rails on a thick board. How are you finding that as opposed to a full SUP rail ? Thanks, Brett.

Clay, that was a brilliant journey hearing and seeing how you’ve progressed.

SUPeter, I’ve made surfboards since the mid 70’s and I’ve never seen such a comprehensive build of any surfcraft or component like yours. Sure there’s the cardboard surfboards and crazy designs but your internal carbon struts are amazing. Congratulations on you ingenuity and dedication.

So no tail wing and a swept front foil. It looks stable as he’s got great control over it. You can’t have people foiling on a single foil as the rear foil is essential to keeping the trim angle of the front foil.

Pono, let’s pull that thread. Are you saying that, for example, a mast should have a strong square tube center (or multiple tubes) and then a soft aerodynamic fairing maybe 3d printed or light fiberglass shell
If so, what’s your proposed size for that to get the strength? I could see 3-4 1/2” square tubes being a mast but I can’t see that being stronger than the current aluminum masts unless it was way thicker than they are now. Now, could a mast be an inch thick? I’d like to know because then we’re getting to where we could have some real structural integrity. A 1” square, heavy walled aluminum square tube welded to a base plate would be damn hard to bend.
Now... where the number of my buddy with the machine shop? I’ve really been ignoring those race car builder friends for too long apparently.
A 1 inch thick mast isn’t going to create a greater -ve difference in performance if it’s short enough. And in fact a thicker section has a lot of low speed and AOA advantages. And the height above the water is really for ‘media show’ and not performance. In fact being closer to the water allows the rails to be used in high speed turns that aren’t yet part of foiling but soon will be. Gee I hope in a year or two when everyone is low level foiling and dipping the surface for drag they remember these posts of mine,

Hi Fishman, the cameras on the nose facing backwards.i only did several videos to see how the foils rides in the water and how much mast flex there was. That video was of a dozen beach tubes and I had to stay high in the tube to prevent the foil hitting the sand. I really don’t foil with anyone else but if I had a Red Bull film crew I’d be able to get better video and stills.
Interesting that these computer geeks designed a foil even more raked back than the Fanatic Aero.

Hi SCB, I think it’s more of a litigious reaction to the clear potential of what happens when foil meets child. Not that it’s a ‘clear and present danger’ but it only takes one example to make a precedence that law should have pre-emptied. I got the word from a CA foiler. It’s the sort of thing that could be fake news but could be the rumblings of a decision that ends foiling in public recreation areas. I hope not. As for the popularity, while there’s an amount of people who foil or make their own foils and post about it, there’s also a lot that foil but don’t post or wish to share.
You guys never heard of me until a year ago and yet I’ve made over 300 foils over 13 years. Im currently in discussion with one of the guys here to make a foil for Mavs so I believe there’s a lot of interest that’s not showing on the radar, because it’s happening in the background. And I’m sure surfboard manufacturers would be looking to improve their customer base by expanding into new territory with technology they already understand. Witness how many new foil makers have popped up in the past 2 years ? Are they all new companies or spinoffs of similar industry players ?

Has anyone else heard the rumour that foiling could be banned or limited to specific areas due to the danger to other water users ? I heard it in Ca. It’s a kinda left field rumour but it does have some substance in that foiling is globally and exponentially popular and has few constraints on its useage. There’s very few injuries but there is a small scare factor with the mast and wings.

I'd like to see Tuttle boxes go away, I think mast tracks make more sense, but purpose-built foil boards will compensate for the design limitations rather than switching to a better solution. Inertia that comes all the way from windsurfing boards that already had a Tuttle and a lot of strength.
+1 Bill. The Tuttle needs to go.
