maxsonic posted one of his rans here http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,30176.15.html and amount of data looks pretty impressive.

so you guys think Apple watch would have upper hand vs vivoactive? I realized that sport band is good and if I want to be little dandy I can buy metal bracelet off ebay. The question is if there are any apps fro Apple watch that would work for paddling. def like the idea to be able to communicate even the phone is tucked away.

After 3 years of use I just lost my 25 bucks surf watch in Hermine two days ago. Was seriously considering  garmin vivoactive HR. But Amazon reviews made me thinks as there is significant amount of negative comments and Garmin's replies mostly canned.. Read about new Apple watch too today, but stanlessteel watch with metal bracelet cost $1000? No thanks. I like to track my excersize but possibility to lose such expensive watch (I wear watch over wetsuit) makes me sick. Not clear what to do.. Might just buy another Armitron and keep phone in the bag.

You would be surprised (well at least I was) when I yesterday  saw the article in WSJ saying bowling is a 4th most popular way of exercise in States. After walking, treadmill and running/jogging..

Awesome, thanks again!

very cool ideas Badger, thank you for sharing. Never thought about tidal rivers. Do you have in mind anything closer to Boston?

I rarely go to Massachusetts and have never paddled there but I have done some boating in Plum Island Sound and Essex Bay. Those would be two excellent tidal estuaries to visit. You can actually paddle from Plumb Island Sound all the way through the marsh to Newburyport. Essex Bay is quieter and more protected with sand dunes and salt marsh. Nearby Annisquam River just to the SE of there can also be paddled but it can be busy with boat traffic at times.

You could also paddle the Merrimac River which has some good current in places and a few scenic stretches. This might also be worth doing. That's everything I know about paddling in Massachusetts.

There are lots of better things to do than just paddling along the coast.

One run I highly recommend is around Gerrish Island at Kittery Point. It covers about 8 miles and has a bit of everything. Creek, marsh, harbor, and 3 miles of ocean with a number of spots to surf along the way. You have to time it so that you go through the marsh around high tide.  Just paddling through the marsh to Brave Boat harbor and back is good paddle in itself.

It's about 5 miles around New Castle Island.

If you want to really cover some ground, try paddling one of the many tidal rivers that dot the coast. You can almost double your speed going with the tide on some rivers, or just drift and let the tide take you. Let the tide decide how long your trip will be. Time it so that the tide turns at the halfway point and brings you back to where you started. You have a choice of going in and out with the tide or out and in. York River is a good one, as well as all the rivers surrounding Great Bay, plus Sagamore Creek in Portsmouth and Spruce Creek in Kittery. Hampton and Seabrook Harbors have some long runs through the marsh. The marshes at Odiorn Point and Rye Harbor are also worth doing.

The Piscataqua River is a major one and not for beginners. Extremely fast current with large boils that can throw you off your board. Boat traffic, tugboats, shipping. It's for experienced paddlers only. I hesitate to mention paddling this river but people need to beware. This place could easily be the location of the next SUP death.

Max, Thank for the review and sharing the run. Pretty informative. As a fitbit HR user wondering if you wearing the Viviactive all the time. I use silent alarm on fitbit and have the watch on me most of the time.

I was looking into 735XT or fenix 3 hr but it's out of my budget.

The VivoActive HR is a pretty solid and not too expensive tool for that purpose and so much more.
It will last for way more than 8 hours at a time. Very intuitive and easy to use I'm my experience.

You view the routes on your phone or in your browser and get all the stats you'll ever need including
Heart Rate, total strokes, distance per stroke.

You could name your routes as well and share them, record the gear you used to track milage and so on.
If you really want to get scientific with it, you can connect an external heart rate belt and cadence sensor like the Vaaka.

You could also set vibration alerts so it will vibrate every 1 mile (or whatever you choose) for instance.
also includes a digital compass.

My experience with phone apps wasn't good for long runs. I prefer to have my phone ready and charged for emergency or any other kind of communication. The GPS apps I've used did suck the life of the battery.

I second this recommendation. I've been a Garmin Fanatic and used many of their products...the new Vivoactive HR is awesome.  The daily activity tracking is excellent for general fitness...for each activity you can set whether or not it will use GPS. Custom SUP activity built in.  Waterproof. Downloadable variety of watch faces to choose from. I'm really loving this watch. Here's my SUP activity for today using the Vivoactive HR:

Hi, I'm new to sport myself and recently got my first paddle  Accent Indy Tour 780 from REI.

It's light (carbon shaft), adjustable(with quick release on handle - like this feature a lot), has a good flex and well balanced IMHO. I'm almost 6' myself and it has some length to spare, not sure what is the minimal suggested paddler height would be.

Hi there,

One of my intentions for getting into sport was a desire to shred some weight. I was wondering if I'm not alone and if anyone seen significant progress and care to share story and , especially how much you paddle or how you decide on how much you paddle, do you have a routine, etc..
I'm almost 6' (182 cm), and about 210 lbs. My current goal is get back to 190 where I was just few years ago..
I've been out on the water just few times and I'm comfortable to cover about 2 miles in 30-35 min if it's not windy. So far I cannot tell what would be better to increase speed, or try to go distance or just grab a bicycle and ride to work :D

Thanks!

BTW, since we are on the subj..

Leash loops are wear out too.  I had one broke on me and I had  to cut my session short last year on Cape Cod. Board went all the way to the shore and luckily was not damaged in waves crashing on shore.  I went to store on the way home and got loops for all my boards.

Gear Talk / Will this PFD work for paddling coastal waters?
« on: August 02, 2016, 10:05:27 AM »
Hi,

New to sport but not to ocean. As we all know from our riding days - ATGATT ("All the gear , all the time") I'm gearing up for cruising in Boston Harbor (Broad Sound to be exact), and was wondering if this PFD would work for that purpose.

I have in since my sailing days.. I will check expiration date/ replace cartridge if necessary. The question if anyone used it and it's comfortable to wear for paddling...
I might buy specific PDF later when I understand what I need, don't want to rush to buy or postpone water time :)

Thanks in advance
oA
