General Discussion / Re: Longboard SUP Revolution - Bali 2023
« on: April 28, 2023, 09:58:47 AM »

This renewed attention to longboarding seems “right”.  I have never felt the appeal of shortboard slashing. (Probably because I can’t do it : ) But longboarding seems to be the right way to surf, so I’m glad it’s getting amplified.

Surly - Will do. I ordered it in October and delivery ETA is June-ish. So being patient.

Wing -  Women and longboarding just seem to go together.... Nice video of Haley Otto.

Thanks for posting this. Fun to read your appreciation of detail. This may drive you crazy but I sold my "normal" longboard (a Walden Mega Magic (9'6 x24) and am replacing it (for prone surfing) with a Starboard Longboard SUP at 9' x 26" @ 95L.  I'm too accustomed to my handles and deck pads... getting older (and/or wiser )

Very nice. And super natural as always.  And I never thought about pulling a board over snow. Never HAD to think about it : )

It definitely has some nose rocker designed in. I have my fair share of late drops and have never thought of this board as a problem that way. You're right too that the nose shape is pulled in somewhat from a traditional longboard nose. Dana Point Infinity has one they rent out. You could check mine if you're ever in Seattle.

My two cents: I have one. I surf it mainly on longboard friendly rollers. I like a reactive board that can turn from the middle.  The 9'6 New Deal works that way. I'm happy. It is more reactive when you get back on the tail, but I tend not to walk around on boards so I'm not your best source on that.  Is it loose? It can be. Especially relative to its size.  Check out some videos on line and it will give you a sense.  And it has a 10" center fin box so you can control looseness somewhat by moving fin forward (and fin selection generally). Another impression is that it is fast. Stability wise it's totally fine, but I wouldn't say that it is especially stable.  It begins with inherent stability from its general longboard shape, but then its light weight, shaped bottom maybe (double concave) and domed deck and rails contribute to a more performance character.  Weight - very light. Domed deck? Yes, but not objectionable. I prefer a flat deck, but this is fine. It's technically domed, but the standing area is relatively flatter, and then the curve accentuates near the edges down to the rails. I like the board. The build quality is outstanding.

Hard to tell from the photo what fin type (depth, etc.), but if you call CBC (California Board Co) they can tell you, and sell you one. Glad you're stoked!

That’s great that you are getting some time on these boards. Those Dale Chapman NSPs have a great reputation.  Another interesting one is the redesigned Starboard Longboard SUP. Its not a quad but they have the sides pushed out very near the rail. They are low volume, narrow rails and have flat decks which helps with stability. There is a 9 x 28 x 101 L . I surfed the 10 x 29 x 123L for a while, which was the lowest volume board I’ve ever used (I’m 185Lb) and it was fine. But I learned that I didn’t like swinging that 10’ length around.

Argee I don't know how much of a trihedral your paddle has, but I found the grabbiness of the blade is a huge factor.  I originally got a Werner RipStick at 89 sq inch, thinking that would be plenty small, but its shaped so much that I changed to the 79 sq inch version, and it has been perfect.
BTW ..."old" Ventura surfer at 49? Ouch dude... : )

The New Deal can get a real grip on your imagination, and deservedly so.

But on the alternative path idea:

The Super Frank has more stability built in, and at comes in ‘all’ the dimensions.

7’6″x29.5″x4″ (100L)
8’x30″x4.2″ (115L)
8’6″x30.5″x4.4″ (130L)
9’x31″x4.625″ (147L)
9’6″x31.5″x4.687″ (160L)
Wide
7’6″x31″x4.4″ (115L)
8’x31.5″x4.5″ (127L)
8’6″x32″x4.5″ (141L)
9’x32.5″x4.687″ (156L)
9’6″x33″x4.9″ (175.6L)

You mention not repeating the Quatro instability mistake -  my impression of the New Deal is that it is not as stable as the shape suggests.  So going down in volume and hoping for more stability than the Quatro is a gamble.  Maybe a trip to Malibu is a good idea. (When is a trip to Malibu never a good idea?)  For what its worth I have a 9'6"x31"x141L New Deal that you're welcome to throw on a Seattle lake to get a sense.

There's one for sale in LA. Maybe the seller is talkative.

Were you counting down waves 58, 59...  : )

The value I get from a passport card really only comes from living next to a border.  Using the passport card to drive into Canada means I don't have to carry, keep track of and risk losing my regular passport, with all the headache around replacing it.   So I tell myself...
