Whitewater and River SUP / Re: Board fin setup for rivers?
« on: September 08, 2016, 02:01:00 PM »
Badger, you are in the wrong section with your advice: here you are in the "Whitewater and River Sup" :-)
You simply cannot go on whitewater with fins even half long the one you mention.

Well, Badger was writing at 3:00 AM... : )

But he brings up a good point, and one that argues for small flexible fins, and that is when your moving along under the river's power, not your own, it's more likely that you might unexpectedly hit something, and the greater the fin, the greater the chance of getting launched...part of the fun I guess!

I'll echo acquamossa's advice about the short side bite type fins, with the caveat that my experience is on a Red Paddle Co 10'8" Ride, with a 2+1 setup, but all three are 3ish inches in height (depth?) which I'm thankful for when I hit shallow sections, or pull off into a shallow eddy near the bank.
Maybe there is a need to have directional stability that a taller fin would provide, but at my casual level, the short fins are adequate.
It's a lot of fun. In a sport where 'fast' is still measured under 10 mph, drifting along at 5 is nothing to sneeze at...
You're lucky that all you got was swelling.  A friend of mine also got squirted in the eye by a crab, and ever since he can only give sideways glances.
Ouch  ;D

Congrats on the awesome adventure!
(I confess I had to convert 104km - 65 miles.)
Thanks for sharing!

There's a bit of a carry to the water at Westport (south of the pier).
And when you want to warm up after, I recommend "Aloha Alabama BBQ"...
They put the bar in BBQ.
(And I am not a brand ambassador : )

Hi - I have both a Freeride XL and  the smaller Freeride. It's a great all 'round board shape. Unsung.
I'm 190, and between the two I'll grab the 30" Freeride.  IMO you, at 250 lbs, will have no problem on the XL.  ...and since you have a dealer in mind, might as well ask for that test ride.

Maybe you should try a different carburetor.

Also, "Jolene" is kind of famous slowed from 45 to 33rpm:

...and the blade offset angle is typically greater on a race paddle compared to a surf paddle. The thinking being that the greater angle on the race will result in both a better beginning portion of your power stroke and, at the end of the stroke, at your heels, the blade will be angled in the water such as to avoid the pushing water up and the front of your board down (both being counter productive to the lift you're trying to maintain).
Also the lesser angle of a surf blade allows you to brace with each side of the paddle as need be, without digging in and braking as would be more true with a greater angled blade.
I don't know about downwinding, but the couple of times I've done it I know I sure braced a lot, as a novice. So the lesser angle would seem to make sense there, too.

I don't think this is hijacking the thread, but I'm curious, for surfing,  about others' preference between a larger blade (for acceleration through sheer power) or a smaller blade  (for acceleration through quick strokes)?
