"Board is in excellent condition. Selling because I broke 4 ribs and don't want to experience that kind of pain again."

Gear Talk / Can I buy a Gong SUP in the states? Unfortunately non...
« on: April 16, 2019, 05:57:57 PM »

But I do like their style:

Thanks for contacting us here at GONG.

I wish I could help you out but for the moment we do not send rigid Boards to the States. It is very expensive for the client and possibly risky with the transport services.

I can send many items just not rigid Boards.

I do have some hard headed clients over there that have come over on vacation and taken one home, even a guy who forced his poor mom to drag one through the Paris airport for him…

I can get them sent anywhere here, hotel, campgrounds, depots, coffeeshops. Just need an address and local cellphone.

If those are options for you I can get it sent anywhere in Europe for the price you see online.

Thanks

I’ve been thinking about getting a big board, primarily for relaxed cruising between breaks... but for surf.

What are peoples’ thoughts about using an oversized performance surf shaped board instead of a longboard or large allrounder shape?

Granted if super-sized, a performance shape wouldn’t reach the performance it was designed for. BUT, if my goals do not include shredding or stylized longboarding, what harm in having decent rails and a shape that can turn?  (…and for the humility record I can’t shred or drop a knee turn.)

So specific example – The ‘appropriate’ Jimmy Lewis World Wide for my 185lb would be the 8’9 (141L).   But there is also a 9’9 x33” (171L).   Would that be a big board that is fun? … or just a big pain in the a** … ?

SUP General / Is Coreban still in business?
« on: February 27, 2019, 04:23:44 PM »

An email addressed to the website's North American market contacts came back as undeliverable.

Not to mention the general lack of them for sale online.

Maybe I'm behind the times on Coreban news...

Last few years we've been doing Christmas in Hawaii. Kind of a stress reliever... in many ways.

Usually hotels, but thinking about a house or condo this year.

Any specific recommendations?     (Before I start wading through the internet : )

Maui probably prefer the West side... keeps the kids entertained.

Oahu - south shore's the preference.

Thanks!

Technique / How I travel with my board... if helpful
« on: June 28, 2018, 12:41:26 PM »
Evan's post prompts me to share my process for travelling with a SUP. In agonizing detail.  But there’s a reason behind every bullet point of madness.  Hopefully it will help anyone considering it.

Why take my own SUP?  Surprisingly few surf shops carry quality surf SUPS. And even if you find a good shop, you have the travel to and from that shop, plus the cost and the inconvenience to you and those you travel with. It can eat up what time you have on your trip.

My solution is to have my own board, always on my rental car, and secure enough so that I can be on a walk or eating at a restaurant without having to worry about the board being stolen.

I generally fly Alaska, so the board travels just as a normal piece of luggage. Because I’m a mid-tier frequent  Alaska flyer, I get two pieces of luggage for free. One of which is the board. That’s nice.

The travel board of choice is a Blue Planet Fun Stick at 9’4”, which is comfortably under Alaska and some others’ length limitation (of 9’5” or 9’6”). It also has the SupGrip handle allowing for running a locking strap through for security.  The board bag also has an opening where the handle is located, which is a godsend. It’s so much easier to carry a full board bag by the handle instead of by an handle hanging off the bag edge.  Instead of wrapping the board in bubble wrap, I use a second lighter board bag inside the travel bag. (I also cut a handle hole in the interior bag.)  This allows the TSA to just unzip one, then unzip the inside one to satisfy their curiosity.  I heard a story of a one piece  paddle being cut in half to inspect the interior, so I want to remove any obstacles to the TSA doing what they think their job is.   I also throw my paddle bag and paddle in the board bag.

I go to the airport with the board with  my usual rack and straps.

If curbside check in is available, use it. A generous tip is totally worth the alternative of schlepping through the terminal.

If  curbside check in is not available, I drop our luggage and my patient and understanding wife off at the terminal, where she waits until I return from dropping off the car at the offsite parking.  (The goal here is to avoid transporting your board from parking to the terminal.)

I return to the terminal and move board/luggage to counter, then take the board to wherever the oversize luggage drop off may be.

Process is reversed at the destination: Pick up luggage from carousel, and go find board at oversize luggage; deposit all of the above, together with angelic wife, at curbside, while I go pick up the rental car (hopefully on-site) and return to the arrival area and load up.

In an otherwise unused outside pocket of my suitcase I  have a (i) small pair of EVA pads, (ii) two locking Kanulock  straps and one regular strap.

The end destination product is my board on the rental car, handle down, with one Kanulock strap running through the handle for security, and the other two straps holding the board. I can do that inside a bag or just the board alone. Heat-wise, the bag is reflective facing upward, and the board is white facing upward (on the car).  Be careful if the paddle is still in the board bag when cinching down the straps.

Is it worth all the trouble?  It is if you use the board enough. The annoying parts are at the airport and the inconvenience to those you’re travelling with, but if I hustle, it’s not too bad. And the freedom of just being able to squeeze in a trip to a break on my own schedule is definitely worth it.

Gear Talk / Any harm to a carbon paddle if I boil it?
« on: June 19, 2018, 01:00:05 PM »
Q: WTH?
A: I've agreed to try to remove a handle from a neighbor's paddle. I'm assuming its epoxied on. With what kind I have no idea. I've read Zoners' attempts at using boiling water to loosen. This not being my paddle I want to first check with others' experience. I know carbon itself is heat resistant beyond 212 degrees, but the resins? Any experience of others appreciated.

I know, there is no substitute for... But anyway, Zoo's "strange booties" thread got me wondering if something like the Vibram toes version or the similar Body Glove water shoes would work in like 3/2 California conditions, to keep your feet warm enough.

It typically happens that eventually my normal (O'neill) boots fill with water, with no easy way to drain.  I could (i) go to shore or  (ii) lay on my back on the board with my feet in the air, but that's doing a disservice to all SUPpers reputations everywhere.

Is there a shoe that both keeps some warmth in and drains?

Alternatively, is there a trick to draining ones' boots?

SIC X 14 Pro  $1300 (less $200 Zoner discount).

Super fast board. SIC's full carbon SCC construction. Extremely light weight.

• Construction: Carbon Composite (SCC)
• Length: 14'0"
• Width: 26"
• Weight: 23.0 lbs
• Volume: 253 L

From S.I.C. :

"The X-14 Pro is built for speed over stability. Whether racing in the Elite 14-foot or unlimited class, course or distance racing, the X-14 is best-in-class. The X-14 PRO's progressive waterline provides a lively feel, which leads to quicker acceleration getting on glide faster and stay on glide longer. The narrower shape makes for a faster, more agile, pure race board for the Elite racer.."

Nice condition overall; one ding along a rail; professionally repaired (Big Winds) (see photo).

Fin: S.I.C. US 8.3" Weedless

Starboard All Star 14X28 - carbon sandwich construction - $2000  (less $200 Zoner discount) -Seattle

This was marketed by Starboard as their downwind board, but also for bigger guys and those interested in stability (you know, on a board).  Interestingly, the 309 L volume of the 2016 28" All Star is less than the 324 L of the narrower  27" All Star of the same year. Similarly the  15.9" tail width this 2016 28" All Star is less than the 17.2" tail width of the narrower 27" All Star. The 28" also has side drain holes and a slightly differently shaped nose.

I’m a big fan of the drain holes btw. They extend my barefoot season. Even when its nice weather out, if your feet have any cold water sloshing around them, they’ll get cold.

Year 2016
Length 14'0
Width 28"
Thickness 8.3"
Volume 309L
Construction Carbon Sandwich
weight (approx) 27.12 lbs.

It's in good shape. There are a couple of scratches under the session saver tape squares (as shown in the photos).

Starby Race fin included.
