General Discussion / Any 'larger fit' impact vest recommendations?
« on: August 24, 2023, 12:52:52 PM »

My BMI is not what it used to be.  Torso is more barrel shaped than V shaped.

Has anyone run across an impact vest, prefereably zippered, that fits larger?

Perched on top of their longboards ?!?

Or just ‘surfboards’ back then, I guess.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Chris Hemsworth's 'Limitless'

This is a pretty good six episode production (Nat Geo/Disney+).  Each episode focuses on a separate approach to bettering life quality  - stress reduction, fasting, cold therapy, brain health, ageing gracefully, those sorts of things.  I was eating pecan pie during the fasting episode.  It's entertaining, and there are some good, long-term things to take from it. And some arctic surfing.

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Sayulita
« on: February 17, 2022, 04:58:18 PM »
I just spent five days in Sayulita. A happy delayed consolation trip from cancelled holiday travel plans. I decided to go stress free and not rent a car, which meant I did not go to other breaks around Punta Mita… But it was great just chilling in one place. It’s a longboard heaven. And lots of local talent… men and women… (boarding talent).  A few SUPs. But one of the effortless best of them all was a SUP’er on a New Deal, looked like 9’.  I rented a 9’3 Starboard Wedge.  Could catch anything, but kind of a cruiser.

If anyone‘s interested I can share intel on good places to stay - a good place to rent quality boards (https://www.surfmexico.com/high-performance-rentals/Surf )(they deliver) - good places to eat  - a good place to get your Covid test for USA re-entry, however long THAT will last.

Highly recommended… both Sayulita and not having a car in a walkable Mexican town : )

Classifieds / Fin Wanted - Starboard 8"-10" (210 mm or larger)
« on: September 02, 2021, 03:41:36 PM »
Either dolphin or touring... will be almost exclusively used on flat water.

I'm rehabbing a 10'5 Widepoint for a friend so it would be nice to use a matching Starboard fin...

Happy to pay a reasonable price as well.

Thanks

General Discussion / Revelation about paddle grip
« on: April 18, 2021, 03:23:29 PM »
Revelation to me at least. I needed to locate the best position for some RSPro paddle grip. When paddling on the right hand side, I found my right hand was a good six inches lower on the paddle than my left hand when paddling on the left side.
It made me pay attention more on the left, and speed and power increased. I also noticed foot placement, body rotation and all sorts of things. I had grown complacent : )
I haven’t used the paddle in surf yet, but the TSPro is so light as to be a non-issue as an add-on, and it can’t hurt.
The paddle is a Werner Rip Stick. Werner’s ‘normal’ diameter carbon shaft has always struck me as a little industrially large. So I use the reduced smaller shaft option. But that has to come with a smaller handle, which is too small for my tastes. So I used a Kialoa ‘carbon T’, which fits my hand better AND I prefer a T grip for surf. So all works out. Photos are of both handles. ...and I grilled a cheeseburger...

Gear Talk / Price of paddles justified?
« on: March 18, 2021, 02:12:58 PM »
I'm noticing some price creep.

Black Project has released a $600 paddle.

A quick survey of other makes has them at mostly above $400. Some above $500.

Do the high cost of paddles bear any relationship to the cost of design/production/distribution?  I know the answer is yes to a degree, where they're made, etc.

But is delta between cost of mfgr and retail price on a $400 paddle $200?  $300?  $20?

Or is it just luxury item pricing - what the market will bear.
