Foil SUP / Re: GoFoil RS Series?
« on: September 28, 2021, 05:35:51 AM »
Sorry... misunderstood the question.  I thought you were talking about 999 as new toy... now realized you were talking about RS, Steamroller.  Yes.  We all want to know... and GT.

In his video on the Casey Catchup, I believe that James said the RS turns faster and has a lower stall speed than the PNL145.  Seems like an evolution of the PNL.  And Jeremy Riggs said the RS1150 stays up at 7 knots.

That is Maliko 200 territory... what kind of witchcraft is that!?!?  Amazing.

GoFoil already has a counterpart to that...the PNL185 is a super pumpng machine...also turns  like a fighter jet ;D

but i want to see what all this new toy talk is all abouy...if somebody can get theor hands on one of um please do a comparison with the NLs

I asked Dommo49 on the Breeze to do a comparison of the 999 to NL160 and here was his answer:

"For me the NL160 is much looser than the 999 in its roll (rail to rail) so is much easier to whip round quick and do fast cutbacks compared to the 999. The 999 is reasonably loose (and I'm finding the tail you use makes a HUGE difference on this foil) but it turns in a very stable carve and is harder to do short, sharp turns. You can carve it hard in total control though so it's not all bad by any means.

The 999 is MUCH easier to pump back out compared to the NL160, probably because it's stall speed is so low, but also because it is so pitch stable it's easier to stay high on the mast - I find as soon as I drop to half mast height on the NL160 it's game over very quickly, but I can recover from that sort of thing super easily on the 999.

The 999 is more efficient/has better glide so can ride smaller/mushier waves easier than the NL160."

Thanks, Hdip.  I am signed up but haven't had the time to listen to his podcasts at the cadence James is putting them out...

Here is more... GT160 and RS1150 with Jeremy Riggs and Dave Kalama

Apparently if you are in Michigan you can demo the 3 new Gofoil lines...

Agree with the frustration on lack of information.  Looks like GF moved to EZ, GT, and RS lines.

Thanks!  Sounds like it may be game changing for winging and downwind but maybe not in the surf.  You running crazy short?

Looking forward to seeing you again cowboy! Yeah, stoked to get it in the surf tmrw (getting caught up with stuff at home after the long trip, and drive...phew!). Just not sure if the 5-6' surf we're getting this week is going to be the best conditions to try it out for the first time. 😜😧😄

Not too worried about the length, because I've had fun in the surf on ones close to the same size on either side of the 999 (980 and 1050)...should be super fun if it's half as good in the surf as it is with the wing, and DWing. 🤞🏽

I am dying to get a ride report for the 999 on a SUP... please keep us posted!

Nice choice in boards!  Sounds like a perfect size and the new E3 shape looks great!

That Infinity will be fun. You'll just have to think about getting weight back again ::) Actually on the rail and on the water..... Lots of people out SUP surfing again. A lot of newbies. I'm seeing people transitioning from inflatables to hardboards as they get more serious about the sport.

Absolutely!  At 28" wide and 98L, with a 1.2 guild factor, I am pushing it for my 180lbs but so far it has been fun with the hybrid-tomo shape.  I am seeing a lot more newbies north of you, as well.  I guess we kind of greased the skids with the surfers for them although where you are, they do have the flags.

Surf foil... I haven't built downwind skills yet.  So you don't anticipate any problem getting enough lift out of the wing on a SUP?  I weigh 180lbs.  Have only seen videos winging and surf foiling on a smaller prone board.

I weigh 220, it comes up about like an 890, and once it's up, it stays up. I think it's going to be my all-around mid to high wind and SUP foil wing. It's kind of a quiver killer though I think the 1150 is still the king of light wind. 1150 seems a bit spooky in surf for me--it's hard to keep it in the water.

Thanks, Bill!  Sounds like Voodoo. This may be the one that tempts me to try another brand after starting with GF from the original M160...

Yeah... Alex said in another post with dockstarts that it is a new prototype GT2200 that is going into production.  Interestingly I was told that Dave Kalama is now using a 115 sq inch blade on his paddle for DW... seems like with foiling people are going back to big blades (or even bigger than we used to use!)

There were two more videos posted...

Seems like the formula from the videos is short mast, big wing, big paddle and lots of skill...

Yikes!  Sorry to hear of that turn of events... I remember Danny Ching breaking his thinly glassed 404 that same day.  I was paddling for a few years at the time but never raced so thought it would be fun to do the amateur race on my Naish Nalu.  After I saw all the carnage, I decided to wait until others in my class paddled out after the horn sounded... only to be met with oncoming sets and getting washed to shore.  After the waves subsided I started the race in dead last place.  Ended up passing a couple of people paddling and then another couple when I caught a wave.  Probably still finished last in my class but had such a great time I ended up buying a race board only to find that we were at the pinnacle of the sport... PPG and the other races just didn't have the same energy.  Interestingly the last couple years has been all about foiling but I just picked up a 7'11 RNB last week... what a fun little board!

Do you mean surf foil or sup downwinder? For surf foiling, I think some of the Axis crew has. Rod Parmenter and a group of the axis folks were headed to Swell city or maybe tunnel 4 to do a SUP downwinder. I think the wind was too light and the swell too dinky for that to work, but we'll see. I would absolutely surf foil this thing.

Last week I did an 8 mile distance paddle in cool overcast skies and glassy open ocean. When I paddled past Doheny there was some fun little knee high waves. I caught a few. This guy who was standing in the lineup on a big all arounder, asked me how old my 14' Hobie Elite was. I had to think about it and all the Battle of the Paddles it's been through, I guessed 11 years? Not sure why he asked? It does look a little beat:) It has never taken on water, which is amazing.

Anyway.. Surfed yesterday and it was shoulder high. So much fun.

So cool!  Did you do the BoP at Salt Creek on that one?  I remember signing up to the non-pro race on my first all-around board as my first race ever and showing up the night before and everyone was lined up looking at the waves that were coming in... what a fun time!  Too bad it turned out to be the pinnacle of the sport and the last year that the race took place in that format.
