Some of you here mentioned they wanted to see testing for a longer distance, I felt the same way as I wanted to see results for half of mile so I ran my own test. While not as comprehensive as John Judge's tests, it still paints a clear picture.

I used my SIC FX 12'6 with the same fin setup as John's:

Twins: 4.5"X11"
Center fin: Stinger 7"
Ventral: 2"X9"

Single fin setup: Larry Allison's 11" Ninja which I found to be the
Fastest single fin in my quiver.

Distance for the test was 0.46 mile on a lake.
I had 8 alternating runs with 10 minutes between each run.
I used both VivoActive HR and Speed Coach 1 for the test.

Results below are average calculation of the runs:

Fins                                               Time (min)           MPH          SPM   Top Speed
Twin Box/Ventral/Stinger                     5:17                5.22           47         6.2
Ninja 11                                             5.20                5.17           47         6.4

Notes:

You can notice that the single fin produces higher top speeds peaks but still produces
Somewhat lower overall times and that is due to the superior forward momentum (projection) of the 4 fin setup. I could see on the GPS that the board maintains higher speeds between strokes with the 4 fins.

Another thing to note is that the fin system was NOT installed by Larry thus placement is not optimal. I found it to mostly affect the board's tracking and while I still get better tracking with the 4 fins than most single fin setups, the Ninja 11" is a clear winner in the tracking department especially if I add a ventral support.

So if I was doing mostly flat water sprints, I would not use the 4 fin setup but rather the
11" Ninja with ventral support, but for everything else I would go with the 4 fins.

I don't see a reason for cadence to increase by as much as I'm understanding it does form the posts. And if it is the case then looks like the "too small" point has been reached.

There obviously is a point of diminishing returns. Though I sure do look forward to using my Bz Cards when I get better.

I also think you that is the case, however, what was too small yesterday could be just right
tomorrow, unless you have a 100% efficient technic.

I wonder what is the point of diminishing returns? It reminds me a time I was demoing a board and inadvertently ended up participating in a recreational race.

Thomas Maxismus was leading the group. I noticed he was using the paddle upside down and paddling with the handle while using the blade as the grip. I was fascinated by this, I was probably paddling at 80% and I was not gaining on him. That was a 2 mile race and he ended up second place.

Think about it, he was basically paddling with a credit card sized handle that is not even design to have a catch and still able to produce somewhere around the 4mph speed (he did use crazy fast SPM). So what is the point of diminishing returns?

This "blade not slipping" idea is starting to annoy me.

Maybe it's just me, but it sounds like the poster uses the word slipping to describe paddle
flutter. Use to happen to me a lot before I started paying attention to proper technic and it did feel like the paddle was slipping but not the way you think of it but more because I was catching a lot of air (As Larry Cain describes it) due to improper technic.

At that time I was using a paddle size 100sqi :o As my technic improved I was actually able
to produce the same/better results on a smaller sized paddled. I'm now on an 80sqi and my results are better than they ever used to be, same amount of training.

The other thing I've noticed is that with my improved technic, I'm no longer able to comfortably use the bigger blades, I just load-up the paddle too much and my level of training does not support the extra power needed to apply the same force on the bigger blade without burning my self in a very short period.

I have the same fin setup as John Judge on my SIC FX 12'6 and I'll second his findings.
Aside from the top speed test which I haven't gotten around to yet, I share all the other
conclusions:

  • Improved stability
  • Better tracking
  • Improved handling in chop and confused water
  • Improved foot steering control

I should have more flat water speed results this week

Well, I grew up in NYC. I moved north to get away from the concrete and steel. It's not so much the water quality, but all the crap that's in the water. Plus, I'm on the water to be with nature. An urban paddle like that is pretty far from why I paddle.

Maybe I'm just being snobby.

I don't think you're being snobby, you definitely hit the spot. That said, Paddling on the Hudson is like being with nature. For the most part you're all alone when half a mile from you there are 10 million people boxed-in tightly while you have all the space in the world.

Paddling on the East River sure has the WOW factor, even for someone who lives in the city. Not many people get the see NYC that way and as surf4food put it, it has an appeal. That's why millions of people go around the island with circle liners and other tours, only as a Sup'er you get the front seat view undisturbed & unencumbered. definitely something to do IMO, at least once.

On another note I have a question.  Can you paddle at the beach in Coney Island?

Sure you can, I passed by on my way to the Rockaway Peninsula

Thanks Burchas for the link. After a lot of to-ing and fro-ing I agree the FX is the SIC board best suited to the conditions here, but I will have to wait a long time to get a 2017 one, whilst I can get the 2017 Ace by end October, so the Ace wins.

Yap, availability pretty much wins every time. That's how I decided on my first board. It looks like SIC (or rather Flow sports ) is missing a boat load of sales
because of a limited distribution. I heard this reason few times already.

Hope this board is a blast. I'm sure we're in for some good videos later this year. Maybe even a video review?

I wish this interested me more. I live just upriver, but the idea of paddling around Manhattan sounds gross.

Why do you think it's gross?

... I am also keen to have one of these boat shaped dug outs in the quiver, as it is a shape that is tried and tested and is unlikely to change...

Unless the dug out shape is the main attribute you're looking for in your new board, I would also suggest the SIC FX14. This board really does it all! I've talked to experienced downwinders in Hood River that said it's their goto board rather than the Bullet v2.

You can read the comment from forum member who switched from x14 pro the the FX14 here: http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,28555.msg314101.html#msg314101

From my own experience paddling with the two boards, the FX sounds much more suitable for what
you described. Only if I was aiming for flatware specifically I would pick the x14.

When JR told me you two clocked a 0:56, I was really impressed. Your first canoe run Burchas and you break an hour.

Cove, I think I have you to thank for that. When we went out of the Maliko bay and could not spot anyone on the horizon, It seems JR went on a tracking mission (maybe that's why he was going left when you were going right Bill  ;D). Trying to stay in-tune with him, I put on my donkey stroke. When I spotted you from a far I went into overdrive, nearly flown out of the canoe. So you see why I had to include you in the video, your impressive 1:02 had a part in our 0:56.

I'm now in Hood River, looking at the windless river praying to the wind gods and thinking about Maui.

What do you think Pono, could I get lucky twice and have a comparable Viento Run?

Once I'm back in New York, there are not much opportunities for epic downwinders to my knowledge, maybe one from the North Fork to Connecticut crossing the Long Island sound. And No, there is no shuttle for that. No Jeremy Riggs either, we're on our own for that Spoonbill.

I was wondering how a good Maliko run looks like for the elite guys. I went out with Jeremy Riggs for a session, caught few very nice long glides but for the most part I was working hard to connect bumps but wasn’t doing much damage other than to my shoulders.

I could’t help but thinking I’m missing some fundamental understanding so I asked Jeremy to have a hands-on session where he breaks down the technic blow by blow. Jeremy said the best way to do it is on an OC-2 with him, where he does the steering and dictating the pace. Boy was he right, that was probably the best downwinder I’ll ever get to experience. Jeremy is a wizard or as my wife puts it, the Bump Whisperer.

Here is a short edit of the session. I had hard time editing the highlight reel as almost the entire run is an highlight reel. We were hammering hard! Not much downtime when you’re doing the full Maliko run in 56 minutes.

Gear Talk / Re: Ultimate hydration pack suggestions? What do you use?
« on: August 03, 2016, 11:43:37 PM »
I have a new favorite hydration pack, the EO Gear pack with the front pouch worked great, very comfortable and it had all the features I wanted, thank you burchas for the tip, standupzone came through again.  This is a photo of me wearing it at the M2O finish.

Congrats on the M2O!  I'm glad it worked for you. Was it enough for the entire race. What did you put in your divide bladder?

Super cool video. Narration definitely adds a dimension to it and put it in context.
One thing though, not a criticism but a feature request, I would love it if for every spot on the vid,
The opening shot would be  a zoom into a stylish map that marks the spot on the map, dissolving into
The footage. I'm now on Maui and I would love to check out all these spots, would make a lot easier.

Hope you did get to do Maliko, it's at a definite peak these days according to Riggs.
from yesterday's run...

I bought the Totem 7'6 for that reason among others. Although it is a little too advanced for my level
I'm now able to catch every eave on it. Still struggling with controlling it on the wave but that too will come.

All in all, a good quality board! Very stable, very fast very durable. Good for peeps even at 200lbr according
To the company (I guess it's depends on the rider's level).

I can make 180 on it with one stroke from regular stance. Makes it very easy to setup for every wave.

Just make sure to pump it up to 22-23 psi. I could not catch one wave when it was pumped to the manufacture specs.

I think MSRP in the US is $1750.

$1500 would be a really good deal.

You won't get the correct price using the conversion.

If I remember correctly, JimK gives a nice Zoner discount for these boards so it might be good idea to check with him.

So I had a little chat with Larry today, he took pity on me as he saw my rant about the long wait periods. I got a little look inside the process and have a better understanding why am I one of those who get to wait a longer than usual.

Apparently, most of the fins I have are custom made specifically for me and are not the usual production fins (with much faster turn-around times). Every custom fins that goes out, is being finished specifically by Larry, add to that the specific color templates that I've asked for (with lead time of up to 4 weeks if not in stock) and the fact that its the middle of the busy season and you'll get a sense of the timing.

The other factor is that my board is unique (2-piece SIC FX 12'6 custom) and first of its kind to go with this setup plus the installation of the fin boxes was done by SIC and not by Larry (he never phisically saw it since I got this board before SIC released it to the market as production) so that added some guess work and trial and error to get closer to dial-in the right setup for me.

To sum it up, if you have a regular production board that was modified by Larry or one of his affiliated shops, your route to fin nirvana may be a lot shorter than mine. Copy that Larry. Thx for the compassion. ;)
