Imagine sidewalls 6ft high. Would the board be more stable? Try it and see.
Not really a valid argument. I'll go the other way... Imagine no sidewalls at all. Would the board be less stable? And yes, we are talking about this specific design

I have mixed feelings about the higher sidewalls, especially with my lightweight and how the wind will affect me. I guess only time will tell.
I wonder if higher sidewalks could improve the stability ?
Of what? Pedestrians passing you by
Stability comes from what is in the water, not what is out of it. There are a couple of reasons to have high sidewalls but IMO stability isn’t one of them.
Instead, it’s mostly about (a) achieving a low standing area while maintaining board strength and rigidity; (b) keeping water off the deck; (c) balancing out the windage of having a fat nose (ie. reducing weathervaning).
If nothing else, the sidewalls will increase your secondary stability imo. As far as I could tell, keeping water off your deck will add stability. The last point about those sidewalls is their role in volume distribution so the added volume off the center and towards the rail will increase stability imo. Then there is the matter of the added reserve Buoyancy but I don't think it really applies for the conditions this board is meant to paddle.

Even if you're not going to get some of the classic unlimited shapes discussed here you're still going to see pickup in speed judging by my experience.
On my 16x25 all-around shape I get GPS readings of 5's and 6's mph compare to my 14x24 which is in the 4's and 5's mph. 6mph does not come by regularly on workouts when on my 14' while on the 16' it's an every day occurrence. Mind you, I'm around 180.
Stop the torture.....thankfully I have my Ace-GT but I cannot fathom what a more flat dedicated UL shape would do on the light chop (flat water) on a 15 km run.
I was wondering the same thing my self, what kind of gains I would see on a flat water dedicated 18.4X22, wetted surface wouldn't be much more than my current unlimited so I think I would have enough engine to power it. But I'm perfectly fine with my current or similar shape, I suspect the Ace-GT is not a dog either 18'4" sounds like a chore for a small guy like me. my 16x25 really handles like a 14" in almost every way, on and off the water, which is a really convenient.

Great video DJ! Does anyone by you use an unlimited board for downwinding? Maybe I have missed it in your videos....?
More and more of our crew are getting on the UL bandwagon.
Paul (PT) in this vid had his new 17’4” SIC Bullet.. Because they are so fast they are often way ahead of me.
Isn't PT the one with the unlimited Ace?

Awesome! Conditions looks great I like rainy days and the music was dead-on. Liked the clips where you show how nicely the Maliko recovers even when the entire nose is under water. Woo-Hoo it is

BR Storage room is basically an event hall. They have a bunch of racks and when they run out of rack space they put it on tables, it works just fine. When you store you're board you get a ticket with a number on it and this is how you check it in an out of the room. You can take it in and out freely as long as they have someone there, otherwise, you'll have to locate staff member to help you, but I had no issues. If you're doing the graveyard course, I would definitely recommend getting your feet wet with your new board before the race, especially around the Mason Inlet around the same tide as race day, water there get very very shallow and you'll want to see if you can surf you're way in on those tricky short period waves without hitting the ground with your fin at some point. The other thing is getting out of the surf zone, could be big or flat but if there is surf, maybe you'll want to practice getting out on your new board before the race. Good Luck

Since you're looking into paddling around and would have a second board for surf, I would also give a nod to a 12.6 board. This would give you a much better range as far as distance and conditions and could carry you for a while Just in case you decide to venture out and make your way to Lady Liberty There are many good choices, take a look at https://distressedmullet.com/classifieds/I've seen very good boards like the SIC Bullet 12.6 or the Naish Maliko 12.6 in good conditions and good prices.

I'm not sure if that helps, but last year when in Pavones, I met 2 guys their rent/buy their boards in Jaco. Didn't ask them where but I'm sure if it's there you'll find it

That's a very aggressive paddle. Reading the details it's all about power so I don't expect it to be comfortable, even at 78: - Super stiff shaft - Shorter than usual blade for extra stiffness - 8 degree offset for short fast stiff stroke If I meant business at 60 strokes per minute this would probably be the paddle, otherwise, it would just make me feel stiff after a paddle course racing it is.

Welcome to the zone Sup Atlantic!
What are you going to do with this board. is it just paddling around short distances , or are you planning on doing some longer distances. what about racing, any plans for that? BTW, which NYC bay are you referring to?

Logistics are pretty easy assuming you're not going to ride an unlimited. You load the the board on their truck the day before and go about your day. The day of, you park at the Chelsea Piers (where the finish is) and take a shuttle or a cab to the start line.
If you prefer not to drop-off the board the day before, you can just drop it off at the start point and drive to Chelsea Piers to park and make your way back, Before the start. That IS your only option if you are riding an unlimited since their trucks usually won't fit boards longer than 14.
As for accommodations, try finding a place close to the finish.
As for conditions, in the past few years there was nothing unusual. As mentioned there are some parts that can get a little crazy but usually that time of the year is not too problematic. Usually people find the last 2 miles on the Hudson the most difficult, the water there sometime moves in a very unusual way due-to many factors, again, nothing crazy but you just might find yourself in the water for no reason. Another factor to watch is the back eddies, there are quite a few along the course and usually you'll know when you hit it but it's a good idea to have your GPS to monitor those.
The following video is going through in details about every stage of the course so it will give you a good idea what to expect:
All in all I like this race and recommend doing it for the experience.

Had a nice meet up and paddle this evening. Josh got to paddle my 18'x25 unlimited and I got to try out a used 18'x28" Ron House unlimited I just bought. The Ron House needs some serious repair work. I just threw a bunch of shipping tape over the holes and paddled it. It will be a good open ocean, rougher water unlimited of me. It actually glides really well for being 28" wide. I think Josh is hooked on unlimiteds now....
Good Times Now for the easy part: Just figure out which shape and dimensions to go with
