Foil SUP / Should I skip surfing altogether?« on: January 22, 2018, 04:11:57 PM »
I've never got deep into sup surfing for 2 reasons, no easy access to any good surf brakes
and bad energy in general on the line-ups. For a long time I've ignored foiling altogether but than it hit me, foiling could be the answer for these 2 very issues. almost any breaks can work, therefor no more line-ups to deal with. With all the foiling craze these days it seems to be a logical move, and I won't even have to rid my self of old surfing habits that don't apply to foiling. After all, the thing that really captured me in surfing for the super long rides... Any words of wisdom from surfers turned foilers 48
Downwind and Racing / Introducing the "Sleepy Hollow Downwind Run"« on: November 08, 2017, 12:44:44 PM »
Yet Another co-production of "off-shore" and myself in our continuous effort to map-out the
various downwind runs in our area. This time we ventured out to the Hudson Valley to explore the Hudson River downwind opportunities on a southerly wind. We call this run "The Sleepy Hollow Downwind Run". It started at "Philipse Manor" Beach Club Just off the train Station. A nice protected spot we managed to score as it is usually closed this time around. End point was "Georges Island Park" at Montrose where we had a boat ramp. The run started mellow and wind picked-up towards the middle supplying us with nice size bumps even though we were running with the tide. We used off-shore's boards - The Blue Planet 2017 Bump Rider 14'x27" and the SIC Bullet V1 49
SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / S-16 - The stand-up surfski (video)« on: October 11, 2017, 08:27:59 AM »
I recently got my new custom SIC Standamaran (S-16). I was eager to test it on a downwind run.
This past weekend opportunity presented it self, some good mix conditions and confused water, perfect! Riding this board downwind is counter-intuitive, it rides like a surfski than a sup, there is no surfing this board but it is fast, creepy fast... our forum friend off-shore organized this run. He is making a guest appearance in the vid. I'll have some tech specs and detailed pics of the board soon. 50
The Shape Shack / What happened to fused cell foam?« on: September 07, 2017, 07:09:29 AM »
Dealing with leaking boards is such a pain and something I would like to avoid in my next custom foam core board.
Fused Cell Foam seems like a good idea. Talked to few builders and it seemed outside of their purview. Anyone has experience with that and know how to go about getting such a core? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYaaN2ryvZY 51
Gear Talk / Heat Shrink Tape Vs. Electrical Tape« on: September 06, 2017, 06:22:32 AM »
I recently noticed the trend of using heat shrink tape to seal the paddle joints instead of
the time tested popular electrical tape. Anyone using this? What are the advantages/disadvantages over electrical tape? Any product recommendations? 52
SUP General / How to search the "Zone"« on: August 22, 2017, 09:23:18 AM »
How many of you wanted to reference an old post on the zone only to find out that little search box at the
top right of the page is not that useful most of the times. So instead of searching endlessly through old posts or just give it up all together, here is a little trick: go to Google search and put this: site:www.standupzone.com {your search term} so for instance I was looking an old paddle review I made, zero hits on the zone search, but on google it was the top hit site:www.standupzone.com Aztek If you want to get more specific you can use "parenthesis" to make sure the search contain this word and add a "+" sign between search words like so: site:www.standupzone.com "mana"+"paddle" just to make sure you won't get the Naish Mana board dominating your search. Happy searching 53
Gear Talk / Universal Roof Rack?« on: August 12, 2017, 07:31:00 AM »
On the road for a while and I have yet to secure a single roof rack from car rentals companies.
securing a board on a bare roof gets old pretty fast. Does anyone own a good universal roof rack that will fit most cars? preferably something one could travel with though not a deal breaker. Searching for one shows up many results but it's hard to discern which would really work. 54

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / Safety colors« on: June 10, 2017, 10:33:43 AM »
I've recently received a "Hook Tribe" Spartan long sleeve shirt as a gift. I was very glad
to have yet another bright yellow safety shirt for my paddling activities. https://hooktribe.com/collections/mens/products/larry-allison-leashes-save-lives-team-shirt This color has been very effective for me on the heavily trafficked water I paddle in. Of all the these long sleeve yellow shirt I own, this one has become my go to due to its lightweight, moister wicking, quick to dry, spf 50 attributes. For those paddles who also set en example to other, this shirt has phrase "Leashes Save Lives" on its back which I thought is a nice touch working in tandem with the safety color. I usually buy quality shirts like Bluesmiths, Zhik, Kokatat etc which usually cost twice as much so I'm glad I was introduced to this brand and decided to buy few more with other designs ( still yellow though). I also managed to arrange my boat house a 25% group deal for Hook Tribe entire collection and I thought it would be nice to share it for other Zoners to enjoy. Hook Tribe currently have many items on sale so it's an opportunity for "double dipping" on some of the items. Promo code is Ohana25% Enjoy! I'm not affiliated with Hook Tribe in any way and outside of this shirt I got as a gift (not from Hook Tribe though) I'm a paying customer as well but with a nice discount 58

NorthEast / Support your local shaper - East Coast Edition« on: March 04, 2017, 08:44:12 AM »
My preference is usually going custom when possible, especially with the price tags
leading brands are charging for their production boards it made sense to me going that route. Reviewing the usual suspects for custom ocean/race boards in the forum, it usually revolves around the west coast and Hawaii. I'm sure there is a reason for that but that begs the questions: - Are there good shapers/builders in regards to ocean/race boards on the east coast? - Can anyone list the top 5 or so? Since most of my paddling is on the east coast it make sense to me to try a well reputed east coast shaper for my next ocean board. 60
Travel, Trips, Destinations / Costa Rica Craze« on: February 26, 2017, 12:12:53 PM »
Just got back from a month in Costa Rica, this time Pavones to be exact.
I saw some good trip reports here in the zone but none from this area so I thought it would be a nice addition. My last encounter with my local NYC beach break left me battered with a dislocated shoulder in a 40F water and a retreat in a warm water friendlier point break was much needed to sharpen my SUS skills. Pavones is a very remote rural area in CR and doesn't get too much traffic. This time of the year when the 4/5 stars swells are very few and far in between guys like me can enjoy this nice long left breaks all day long without having their asses handed to them. Usually 2-4ft waves with the occasional head high. My wave count here is insane that usually after 2 hour session I'm comfortable leaving the beach. In the afternoon the wind picks up like a clockwork and that means a nice sunset downbreezer (10-12knots) to finish the day (3 miles upwind first). I wanted to bring my surf board ( I brought my 2017 Red Elite 14x25 with) but still dragging my shoulder decided to forgo and just rent a board from my buddy Shawn (Agua Vida Surf) who's a true waterman and shaping his own boards. I alternated between a 10' and an 8'6" Sunova speed inspired boards, both very accommodating and easy to turn boards. I've attached some shots of myself on these waist to shoulder high day. and some of Shawn's from that same day on his new 7' board. Here is a vid of my buddy Shawn doing his thing on this beautiful wave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srSTPVS2ibY and another vid of a typical afternoon downbreezer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjjKzMOkWko Last vid is of Robby Naish a looooong ride on this break when it gets bigger and it does get a lot bigger: https://youtu.be/HgPOuULcxpw That was a fun injury free winter retreat. Only highs and no lows other than on a one certain day when a local big ass turtle kept poping-out blocking my waves. |
