Classifieds / WTB decent 14ft all around
« on: March 04, 2020, 05:53:30 AM »
Hey everyone.  Since I started surfsking and OC1, I don't SUP nearly as much as I used to so I sold my Allstar and haven't paddled SUP for about 1 1/2 years.  I think I'd like to get one again for fitness and just relaxing paddles around the lake.

I'm in midstate PA but can drive a little ways for the right board.  Looking for a 14 by at least 28.  My old Naish Glide was great and I never should have gotten rid of it.

Anyone with a board for under $900 max let me know.  Thanks

I agree that I think that he over estimates people's desire stop driving however you have to admire his vision and willingness to to say f##k off to conventional thinking when pursuing better solutions.

Downwind and Racing / Re: Paddle Blade Coatings for a Race?

From Greg Barton himself (olympic K1 paddler and co owner of Epic):

“I’ve only seen two things (so far) that make a significant difference in speed – and both have been banned by the International Canoe Federation for racing. The first is a slimy polymer compound applied to the surface of the boat. This compound dissolves in the water, lowering the viscosity of the water next to the hull and reducing drag. As it dissolves it comes off until it is no longer effective (leaving contaminated water in your wake)…The other item that really works is a “riblet” material manufactured by 3M. It is an adhesive backed plastic film with very fine grooves machined into it (similar to the grooves in a phonograph record). The size of the grooves is matched to the density of the fluid (water in our case) and the speed of travel so that the grooves dampen the turbulence of the water as the flow detaches from the hull.”

Selling my Allstar after having it for 2 seasons (only really paddled one).  I've been paddling my surfski and OC1 pretty much 99% of the time anyway.

Asking $1100 obo.  For asking I'll throw in a generic adjustable carbon paddle.  Also, willing to trade for a wider cruising board 28" wide or wider.

I'm located in Hershey PA but I can drive Phili, Baltimore or DC since they are pretty close.

SUP General / Re: Sitting (OC1, surfski) vs. Standing (SUP)
« on: August 29, 2018, 04:51:46 AM »
Just to follow up with this thread, I got out on the lake this morning with my 14x26.5 Allstar for an hour.  I haven't paddled SUP this season due to tearing my achilles early in the spring.

At regular fitness pace, I was holding roughly 5-5.2mph over 5 miles.  At the same effort, my OC1 is usually at 6.5mph and my V14 at 7.1mph.  I think I'm going to sell the Allstar and get a nice cruiser for when I just want to relax on the water and when my wife wants to paddle.

This is why surfskis and OC1 get really addicting.

SUP General / Re: Surfski Racks (car and garage)

Those are Goodboy racks on that CRV.  I have a set (looking to get another) and they are great.  I've paddled near Phili with the guy who makes them and you could meet a nicer person.  I can barrel down the highway 75-80 and my ski or OC1 is perfectly stable.

I got a set of J hangers when with my first ski.  They work well but For the money, I use shelf brackets from Homedepot with a pool noodle (the thick ones) wrapped and tapped over it.  Probably $10 for each boat that way.  Mine are on my fence so I use a set of bungee to keep the wind from blowing them off (garage is only 19ft, grrrrr!)

In the first year, it was just the V8 and SUP.  Then in year two came the OC1.  Once I got that, the SUP started seeing much less time.  These days, I paddle my V14 3 out of 5 times.  I tore my achilles this spring so my SUP hasn't touched the water yet.

I hear the V8 Pro is damn near the same as the v10 sport.  I would try a V10 if you can find one to demo.  Its similar in stability to my 550.  The biggest thing I found when getting into a more advanced ski was the lack of primary stability.  You need to get used to the looseness/twitch that you don't get with a more stable ski.  Once you understand the boats behavior, the rest falls in line.

ukgm,
I paddle about 5 times per week, about 5-6 miles per session.  Never kayaked before it.  I've had two V14s actually.  The first attempt after a year of surfski was definitely challenging.  Since that one, I've owned a Stellar SEL (sold it) and a Nelo 550 which I still have for rougher days.

Those other skis taught me a lot about balance and staying centered.  Now on my second V14, I feel relaxed and very comfortable on the water.

Funny but I'm a bit of the opposite.  I started with SUP (naish glide)  and then got a surfk ski (Epic v8) and then and OC1 (Scorpius).

Fast forward two years later, here is my quiver:
Epic V14 (surfski)
Nelo 550 (surfski)
Antares (OC1)
2014 Starboard Allstar
I'm landlocked so usually speed is what keeps my occupied.  My SUP sees the least lake time out of all of them.  My V14 is my go to ski unless weather is bad.  I love my OC1.  I can grind out mile after mile on it and enjoy ever moment.  My SUP only comes out after I have clocked miles on the other two.

The speed out of a ski is just unmatched by the SUP.  I can easy chug along for 6-10 miles at 7mph.

Funny but thats how I've seen lots of people suggest you strap down a board.  I do it the same way however since I bought my straps in a pair, I double strap it just in case one fails.  Doesn't take anymore time (loop them at the same time).

The issue with using one per rack is, what if the front one fails?  your board is going to catch the oncoming wind and go crazy.

kayadogg,
I second that.  I started SUP for a year, the surfski, then OC1.  I have to admit, that my Allstar doesn't see near the water time that my ski or OC1 do.  I paddle flat water and small river downwind and the speed of the ski and OC1 are really addictive.

Plus, you can paddle them much easier into the wind see as you are making your self into a giant wind sail by standing up!

nothing rhymes with happy husband.

Does "who gives a shit" ryhm?  :o

And that's a damn nice place you've got.  In the area you are looking at, you could have a very nice home for a small fraction of that.  My retirement plan is the 10 year younger woman I'm about to marry.  Unfortunately my house is worth about 1/9 of yours.

I guess it really depends on where you are all with all the above.  When I started surfsking, I had an Epic V8 (novice ski, I still have it for winter paddling).  Within a year or so I moved up to an elite ski.  Balance aside, I'm flat out fast in that boat cause it's slimmer and designed for speed.

The same can be said for SUP.  I started with a Naish Glide and now have a SB Allstar.  I'm faster in the SB just because of the design.

If you have a fast SUP and good technique, you may simply need to switch up your training.  Throw in some weights,  interval training which includes 1/4 sprints and running.  Problem is, we never seem to get an two nailed down so well that it only leaves the third to work on.
