The Shape Shack / Re: Custom Torx Tool for in water foil adjustments

Nicely done! I need to start a new container. Most times these says I just find a divot in the concrete of the garage floor and have at it. The trick is not to step in it afterwards, ask me how I know...

I did the knob for the gearshift of my rat-rod RV using a small plastic bottle for the basic shape.

I also tried doing the thing where you start with an incandescent (remember those?) light bulb, break out the phenolic and take out the internals, and fill it up with resin to make a knob for a planer like the gorgeous ones Tom Mahady used to make. He was also ahead of his time using LED lights in his shaping bay.

I did not use mold release and the glass did not come off very good and some is still stuck years later...maybe the plastic shells on the newer LED ones would work better for epoxy or glass with PE resin.

The Shape Shack / Re: How youse lay down the non-skid?

I'd put the build-up for the ridge down first and make sure it tapers to the board so the traction lays easier.

1. Youse folds over the release paper to make a small starter strip, maybe 1" wide [2.5cm]

2. Youse align the piece of traction to a mark and tack the starter strip. If good press it down hard

3. Youse bend the traction up (a) and grab the inside edge of the release paper (b), it seems like the wrong way but works

4. Youse pulls away a little release paper (a) and tack it to the board (b). Press it down, repeat until done. Use a rubber roller/brayer if you have one to push out air bubbles.

This is the technique from my day job for attaching stuff with pressure sensitive adhesive.

Outstanding!
Thanks for posting another build thread!
Now I want to try selective vacuum bagging.
Nicely done Cowboy!

I am in Sacramento CA

I am in the Midwest. I forget that all of California is not south, on the coast, or a stones's throw from a surf shop...but then again neither am I.
Seems like you should be able to get a three quart kit shipped for 100-110 and 1.5 gallons for a little more or do the Apex deal the Cowboy mentioned.

So I am looking at buying Resin Research 2000. Just for the quart kit with shipping is $120.

That seems a little high for a quart kit unless it is being shipped globally. Going back to DW's comments about buying locally when possible. What is your location?

I have tried:
AdTech ProBuild-available locally during the week, no brighteners, got me hooked on epoxy.
Resin Research Kwik Kick-broad user base and email/online info, easy to order and use, haven't ordered recently.
Greenroom Old No. 7-Came recommended by a kick-ass glasser, easiest to use, no need for Add F. Good email/phone tech support, haven't ordered recently.
CPD 4245-least expensive @ 7.5 gal minimum, slower cure, no brighteners. Locally made, same company as MAS/Endurance.

I am down to about a pint of each RR,GR, and CPD and nothing newer than 3 years old. Did some repairs with GR and lams on the 9-footer with CPD and was pleased. I learned how to de-crystallize the raw resin components if they stiffen up. Buddy says I can mix and match since they are all 2R:1H by volume.  I considered doing a test panel for wear and UV resistance for them but then get tripped up by methods and materials and the fact that I should try some West and a couple others to balance out board vs boat style epoxies. I mostly measure by weight 100R:43-45H per mfgr's formula.

Is your ventral fin box a standard 10" Fins Unlimited 'Bahne' 'longboard' type or is it more like the side fin boxes 3"?
I have made a couple boards with a Gearbox  center fin box amidship to allow for a smaller ventral fin.
To illustrate what Bill said, here is a picture I googled. This one is for a Bahne box and has the spring-leaded locking things.
I'd also be asking Robin Mair at Hanalei https://hanalei-fins.surf/ I have a 2+1 set from hm and really like it.

Edubz(s) was recommending Montana too. How did you like it?
I saw one guy on Sway's say it was like having 'an airbrush in a can'.

Looks awesome! How did it go?
I gave up on my wing build, too many irons and not enough fire...but it was a fun winter pastime getting as far as I did.

I am a fan of having foaming PU or HD foam surrounding hardware and then a little glass over it (fin boxes, leash plugs, etc.) In my mind it's adding strength, preventing leaks, and providing a little 'transition' between the different materials. It could all be in my head too...

Coming towards the end of this build.
Fill coat is on and daughter is anxious to paddle. She seems fixing to abandon a full-on paint job and just go for some rattle can colors. It's a little rough, a few more zits and masking tape flecks than I would like.  If it were 100% up to me I would sand and fill coat again or sand and go after it with some sort of 2 part high build primer. Not that I have experience with auto paints, it is on my bucket list to try some spaying sometime. Epoxy company says marine, boat people say use a 2 part , Edubz says Montana, various interweb hacks show the same 5 dollar cans we normally buy around here for other projects. My son and I did a poly board that turned out nice with said 5 dollar cans as a wall hanger but it has never been roaded or surfed.  I can see the old rail dings but in most cases I cannot feel them so that seems to be a success story in that regard.

sure, I can send you the design.  I'm not going into the foilboard building business anytime soon, just doing this so I can get onto equipment that is exactly the way I want it.  I'm not using shape3d, its in Solidworks - so I have a variety of file export options but I haven't figured out while file type is best for the cnc shaper guys

I really like the foilmount  and I-beam idea.  I might work up some sketches of this - I think it would be a lot easier to chop the blank in two pieces rather than 3 and it would still be incredibly stiff.

I had the same thinking to put the structure into the boxes, stringers, and deck and the rest of the board is as light as it possibly can be without falling apart.

Jondrums,
I like the design and pictures.
Even though I have a small CNC and have access to a larger one, I generally just use the CNC for templates and do the majority of the work with hot wire and planers in 1.5# foam, for me it is easier to shape and a little less easier to damage while shaping. Shaping machine softwares do have some nice efficiencies built in for chasing a surfboard shape, but to do the deck inlay and foil boxes could be problematic unless you have the modules for 3D extras. I have used the STL file format to get surf shapes out of BoardCAD, Inventor,  and Fusion360 to go into the front end of my CNC software.  You might be able to give them STEP files too. If you  can get information about their machine (english/metric, size of cutter, origin, file format) you might be able to use a CAM postprocessor out of Solidworks like HMSWorks. If you discover a good path for this and are willing to share I am sure that myself and others here would appreciate hearing ways that work.

My last three boards are is 7.5oz +6oz glass with 6oz carbon 'stand patch'.
Two are for 'clydesdales' and the third rider is much lighter.

LOL TD. I have crutches and an electric drafting table and have yet to modify any for board use.
Cross-posting images on Swaylocks for now.
We have sanded handle flat and leash plugs open. Got another layer of cloth, were up until around 11pm cutting laps and cleaning up. Tonight is supposed to be fill coat one side. Loving the nicer 6oz cloth over the top much more than the 'mystery' cloth underneath, much easier to wrap rails and sand laps.
