Gear Talk / Re: Clothing strategy for PNW winters?
« on: October 15, 2012, 09:45:07 AM »
In Bellingham Bay -- I wear a 3mm farmer john + a 2mm fleece lined white water paddling top. This keeps me warm in the wind and rain and is good enough for the occasional plunge. You might be able to get away with less but I find this comfortable.

EDIT: You're not allowed to complain about this particular summer :-)

SUP General / Where would you move for a year?
« on: October 14, 2012, 05:08:58 PM »
I'm thinking about picking up and moving for a year to somewhere I can sup surf regularly. This is a ways out, but I want to start the planning fairly soon. Ultimately there will probably be lots of factors to take into account, but I would like to cast a wide net to start with, so let's start with two requirements:

1. Very consistent surf with enough scope for some progression. I'm a beginner but hope not to be by the end. Ideal would be a break right out the door with a couple more that work on different swells within a half hour or so.

2. SUP friendly, or at least tolerant. I don't want to spend the year being glared at.

Gear Talk / New fins for Fanatic AllWave 9'2"?
« on: September 03, 2012, 11:17:02 AM »
I managed to trash both side fins on a recent trip to Kauai and I am wondering what people would recommend as replacements? I know nothing about fins, so not even sure what info would help people help me :-). Also, there's a minor chip right along the fin box -- what's the recommended way to fix? Thanks

Gear Talk / Best thin reef booties?
« on: July 25, 2012, 03:19:08 PM »
I am looking for a very thin low cut bootie for warm water -- with either a round toe or split toe, but not 5-finger-ish. I prefer sensitivity over major protection; I am just looking to avoid reef cuts on my feet.

Check out this place right here. My sister stayed here during her honeymoon and I have paddled easy sandy beach break right in front of the place: http://www.vrbo.com/279835. There is a house + an apartment so you can rent one or both as a package. This is south Tamarindo so it's a little quieter than right in town, but on the beach in a sweet spot. A 2 minute walk up the beach and you are at a resort (http://www.hotelcapitansuizo.com/index.php?english) with a great open restaurant -- killer buffet breakfast. You are also not far from Playa Langosta; there's a break there at the river mouth. IM me if you want info on the driver who picked us up from the Liberia airport -- great guy with lots of info; he can also help you out with day trips to ziplines, etc.

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Lessons on Kauai?
« on: May 28, 2012, 08:52:47 PM »
I will be in Kauai in August and plan to spend a lot of time on a SUP on the south shore. Any recommendations for lessons? I am not a complete beginner, but I would like to work on technique in the surf. Thanks.

SUP General / Re: Sunscreen

I just used Scape SPF50 for 10 days in Costa Rica. Worked great -- goes on easy, doesn't run into your eyes at all, holds up in the water very well.

Gear Talk / Re: How much volume is too much?
« on: January 22, 2012, 11:59:13 AM »
@TallDude -- thanks for the advice. I'm a skier so I guess now I have to work on two quivers. My wife will be so happy.

@SupSports -- thanks for the suggestions. I will take a look at your boards.

Gear Talk / How much volume is too much?
« on: January 20, 2012, 03:48:47 PM »
I am a beginner with some time on three different 11-ish by 29-ish boards + 5 days on the Starboard Whopper. I am looking for a 9-6 x 31-ish board and I was thinking about the Fanatic AllWave. But this thread (http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=14613.0) has now got me wondering about thickness and overall volume b/c I don't want a board that is too corky and 174L seems like a lot. I am 5'10" 190 trending downwards (I hope :-).

So -- any thoughts on the AllWave or any other suggestions. I will surf this at Tofino in the spring and on Kauai in the summer. Probably knee to shoulder high surf for a bit yet. Thanks.

SUP General / Re: Knee problem
« on: July 15, 2009, 04:07:43 PM »
kwhilden -- that makes a lot of sense, esp. as my back started to get sore from SUP about when my knee did. Does your PT have any stretch or strengthen recommendations that might help out too?

SUP General / Re: Knee problem
« on: July 15, 2009, 02:36:39 PM »
Thanks surfslider. I was thinking about how my knee was bothering more snow skiing this year than last -- and I have been working on a wider ski stance. I will try to narrow up my SUP stance and see if that helps any.

This issue is more severe when I primarily paddle on the right. I think I'm planting that foot and rotating around the right hip (which is tight) and the knee.

SUP General / Knee problem
« on: July 15, 2009, 10:51:11 AM »
I have been SUPing for about 6 weeks, all flatwater/chop, usually 30-60min sessions. I made technique adjustments that have really helped my shoulders and elbows (mostly body rotation and keeping the arms straight). But now I am having issues with my right knee (ACL surgery 2 years ago), which is probably from the torque I'm putting on it when I rotate my torso. It hurts only a little or not at all during paddling, but as soon as I stop, it becomes sore below the kneecap and to the inside. It also swells a little. Any ideas on technique and foot placement, or some exercises, that might help alleviate this?

Gear Talk / Nitro vs Carve
« on: June 23, 2009, 01:35:15 PM »
I am new to SUP and will be buying one of these paddles later this week. I come to the sport with some shoulder issues and I have done some reading on technique, paddle length, blade size, shaft stiffness, etc. My main question is whether the light weight but stiffer Nitro or the heavier but more flexy Carve would be easier on the shoulders -- or whether it's a wash. Money is not the main consideration, but it does factror in a little.
