Michael F,

I think that it shows that SD TRULY is a surf town and that OC and LA are just pretenders because the surf culture permeates decision-making at the county level... whereas in OC, the lady in charge of enforcing the county regulations... and who is supposedly formulating the regulations right now... does not even know that people actually surf on paddleboards...

Ventura seems to be more like San Diego...as the weekend before last, I was paddling Silver Strand in Oxnard... I went to the lifeguards before I paddled out and asked what the etiquetter was (as it was afternoon) they said, essentially, be safe, stay away from swimmers and don't be a kook.

On my way out of the water, the LG in the tower yelled down at me that I ripped.  I am not sure that I do... but I know that I have fun.  That is a surf stoked culture!

Thanks Pono...
the classic part is that a guy was learning to surf on a longboard in the blackball area (super crowded with kids and swimmers) ... and when I packed it in and paddled back outside of the reef on my 6'8" shortboard, I was surfing leashless in front of the boulder field... But SUP's are dangerous.... classic.

Now I am not some sponsored guy or anything... I just like to ride SUP's.  I can turn on a dime... throw the occastional fin free slide... closeout off the lip... I haven't pulled the carving 360, but I am working on it...  I enjoy myself and push myself... always trying to ride a smaller board, always trying to get better.  I NEVER EVER TAKE WAVES FROM SURFERS... AND WHEN SURFERS ARE AROUND ME, I LET THEM KNOW THAT IF THEY WANT A WAVE THAT I AM PADDLING FOR, JUST CALL ME OFF AND I WILL PASS.

I got chased out of the water twice this weekend even though I was the only guy out... and I was SUP'ing a boulder field that is closed to swimmers, (even waders), and there were no surfers out within two hundred yards, (Dana Strand, North).  I was told to call US Ocean Safety for rule clarification... I did.  They told me that they were sorry but were just doing what the County Parks Department told them to do (Leslie Ray 714 973-6863.)  They also told me that the County has concluded that it is illegal to SUP anywhere in Orange County other than Baby Beach in Dana Point Harbor.  You heard that correctly.

I will be working with the County to bring sanity to their position, or I will sue to enjoin them from operating without the necessary regulatory authority.  The regulations cited by the County do not allow them to ban SUP's.  Under the current regulatory structure, SUP's could only be banned if they banned surfboards.

Please e-mail me your contact information and I will let you know if and when we have a public hearing... tryan@theryanfirm.com.

If you think I am a jerk for doing this, let me know that too.  I just want to be able to ride my 7'6" paddleboard at the same place that some kook on a 10'0 longboard can ride.  I want the LG's to be able to make an independent assessment on whether or not a beach is too crowded for an SUP, and not reflexively say, "NO SUP's."

Thanks,

Tim

Update,

Was riding a 9'1" Ron House quad and a 9'6" Roger Hinds... picked up a used Craig (from a super cool SUP'er from La Jolla named Gai) 7'6"... 31... 4 1/8... a two plus one, triple wing thumbtail...  but the tail is so wide that I pit twins into the plus ones... I think it would ride better as a quad because of the wide tail... BUT this thing is amazing.  No yawing because the paddle stroke can get so far ahead of the board... super loose... only ridden twice (not in any decent waves) so not too sure of the drive.  I think I will try to get one of these an inch narrover, with a quad, and with a stinger about 18 inches up.

I am assuming this is a quad... I put the biggest thruster fins I could find for the front... and 325's for the rear.  I use this for mushy, fun surf.  When it gets bigger, I swap out the 325's for bigger trailers, (the next biggest size), and sometimes swap out the big front fins for the Vector II, (midsize). Sorry that I don't have all the exact sizes, I'm at the office.

Started out on a Roger Hinds 11'0 and a Naish 10'6" (I pretended this one was from my son) ... Roger then made be a 9'6" quad stinger... When I put this board into the hospital for a few weeks, I bought the Ron House 9'1" quad... at 6'2, 210, it was a little small for me... so I got back on the 9'6" stinger quad... when I put it back in the Hospital (I generally surf beach breaks in Orange County, and just don't like to pull out...  why pull out when you might land a huge air drop floater?  "I know that I will make the next one...") I picked up the 9'1" House again... and (as John Ashley says) started sharpening the saw... riding it in wind chop, wind swell, micro swell... etc.  I finally got it down... really down...  lost twenty pounds, and now LOVE the House... it is a demanding beast, but with two big front fins and two tiny (325) trailers, breaking the fins free and getting the controlled slide is a rush like no other...  Then, Roger made me a 9'5" diamond tail quad... the most beautiful board in the world.  I surfed our last South on that one... did not make it out of a pit at North Strand... (okay, an Orange County pit)... and lost it on the rocks... (those paddle board leashes are really not that good).  She is in the hospital now... and on Father's Day I did the House 9'1" in 15 mile an hour wind at Silver Strand in 1-4 foot little juicers... I am in love all over again!  What a challenge... but what a reward!  By the way, in case you can't tell, I am more stoked on SUP than I can even fathom.

SUP General / Re: Blair SUP - WaveRod - Honesty and Ethics?

I saw the ad on Craigs List San Diego... It was very vague as to whether or not the  ad was for a warehouse of boards... or some guy with just a few.  I responded to the ad stating that I understood that these boards were stolen designs and that as an attorney admitted to the Bar in the State of California, it would be a good idea for the seller to destroy the boards rather than put himself at risk for distributing stolen intellectual property.  Let's just say that the reply that I received back was unkind.  In my reply I provided my bar number (178059) and made myself available to answer any questions that he may have concerning the legality of selling these boards.  Clearly, it was JF... but he called himself WRH... here is the e-mail:

You have no idea what you are talking about, these SUP's are not stolen shapes from Joe Blair or any other shaper. If you are an attorney which I highly doubt(are you threatening me by saying "Putting my self at risk"), you should know better than anyone about false accusations & hearsay.

Are these boards wave rods?  If they are you need to destroy them.  I understand that these designs were stolen from Joe Blair.  By selling these boards you are putting yourself at risk.

Thanks,

Tim
