Gear Talk / waxing technique
« on: February 17, 2019, 09:59:17 PM »
I got a new SUP with no deck pad. I followed this video :
used sticky bumps base and wax coats
But after just one session today (and a cool day for Hawaii ; 70's) the area where i stand was pretty much wax free....
Any pointers to make the wax last longer than a session?

Gear Talk / Board Bag?
« on: February 17, 2019, 09:56:53 PM »
Beyond protecting the paint job from dings etc how does a bag help in day to day?

Does it keep the board noticeably cooler so that one could consider leaving the board in a car?

Pets are a far bigger expense and restraint than most people realize--or care to acknowledge. I like dogs, but wouldn't have one if my wife wasn't so attached to them. I've been looking at our expenses per year and dog expense is big enough to pop up on the radar. That was a surprise. Add to that, there are a lot of things we don't do, or have to do in a contorted way, because of the dog. Our dog is a service dog--a diabetic alert dog, but with a continuous glucose monitor, the benefit is hard to justify on a medical basis.

That book is well done Pono!
One question; why is HAwaii ranked so poorly for WEATHER? Some of the finest weather on the planet IMO

Have used some narrow guage parachute cord but that failed once.
What do folks like to use to secure the leash to the board for SUP wave riding?

Gear Talk / Re: 2018 fanatic bamboo carbon 50 paddle
« on: February 04, 2019, 01:21:54 PM »
Good paddle and price and even better price when you get it on sale at just over $200+. What I like about this paddle is the bamboo/carbon mixed shaft, its one of the best imo. The blade Width7.25", Area90 sq.in./580 cm and this size blade would given my shoulder grief but not with this shaft combo. The blade is nice mixed of tear drop and high aspect and it has a nice grab and release and not worrying about being a technical paddle stroke freak. I started using with the race board 73" shaft length then I cut to 70" for the surf and the shaft still have a nice flex (paddle weight 560g)

where can you get it on sale?

It's challenging to ignore the ride and focus on getting better, since the ride is what makes us do this sport to begin with. Foiling has that problem squared. I'm trying to improve and tighten up my turns, but as soon as I get up in the air on a wave the voice in my head yells "I'm flying!!" and my plans go to shit.

this quote makes me want to start foiling

this is great advice
It's a funny thing.
On my 14'r, I get back to the stomper on every turn...
but on my 9'4 , I never do.

Necessity most likely in my case... the 14 won't turn unless I am at the tail,
but my 9'4 turns really well with my back foot on the rail, over the side bite.
I also suspect that on my 9'4, standing all the way back on the stomper stalls the board.
A person my height, but 50 lbs lighter may have the same stance as me, but on a smaller board, his back foot will be on the stomper and his front will be near the handle, so no stalling.

On speeding up the learning curve:
Early on, I had a hard time getting myself to switch paddle sides when turning, so.....
I would spend entire sessions on ONLY that.

Before a wave I would say "Switch paddle sides"!!!!!
That was my only focus, I didn't care about the rest of the ride....

my sole purpose was to ingrain the paddle switch into a routing action.
