Gear Talk / gel coat repair
« on: May 05, 2019, 01:22:24 PM »
Got reacquainted with some old coral heads from my youth this morning. Dinged the bottom of my JL Stungun Carbon Edition.
The size of this ding is about half penny. The material in the center appears to be carbon. So it looks like i took of the gel coat. No water leaking.
Thoughts on best DIY repairs? Was thinking Epoxy resin with some pigment ...

Where on the jumbo tape is the RSPro logo?  I don‘t want to cover my board’s logos.

That's a lot of money to become a billboard. Another option is to go with Helicopter tape:
double the material, various widths to choose from, really clear with no logos and cheaper.

Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003BZWRIY/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

I use it on all my boards. Soap water wet application you don't even notice it's there.

is helicopter tape as strong as RSPRO?

Paddling for steeper waves I consciously try to stagger my stance not so much to get to a surfers stance but to distribute my weight to prevent pearling.  Sometimes I’ve been paddling hard to catch the wave and if I stay completely parallel and the wave sucks out I get pitched.

Oh yeah. Pearl Jam

Do folks who are on shorter boards use surfer stance when paddling into waves? I still am stuck in the habit of parallel stance till i get some momentum and then jump into full surfers...cant break the habit

My favorite is NSI small diamond to the handle and Hexatraction beyond. Light and sticky in the nose, comfy in the back. I use the diamond pad a tapered chunk of kayak seat foam to make an integrated stomp pad/tail handle. I lightly wax both the hextraction and the pad and sit it in the sun for a few minutes, then wipe off the excess. I wonder if after all this time anyone else has tried this?? Improves the traction without holding dirt and grit. About once a year I get it all off and reapply. Painless.

From now on I try to get all my surfboards without a pad. This is a simple recipe, but it's perfect for me.

Oh, and you kind of need to sand the edges of RSPro. Just a little 400 grit on the upper edge to round it out.

do you custom order a certain size or by a sheet?

Anyone have enough experience with the wax mat to say how long it will last?

I just cant get my reglue jobs to stick! Been using 3m contact in a spray can. Spray both surfaces, come back in 15 and press togther.  a month later, back to square one.

Do i need to really have a super clean surface to do it? And if os, what is the safest and easiest way ot remove the old cement?
