what do folks use to store the camera and mount while surfing assuming you might not want a paddle mount for the whole session?

I settled on this. Price was right and it works well so far.

Question: it seems that when using a paddle mount you need to either know if you will be surfing rights or lefts or flip your paddle around when on the opposite foot? Other wise the video is upside down. And watching the paddling portion of hte videos is definitely NO FUN.

If i mount a go pro knock off on the side of my helmet, the screen will be oriented with the long axis vertically. How do those videos work out for those who have tried this?

I agree that the nose mount is a great learning or teaching tool.
So easy to analyze foot work and paddle handling.
Very revealing and helpful.
Also a great diet aid. 😵

I can’t link my vid from my phone.
“Action can hat mount”
I’ll link it later today.
Shows view and how to make it.
Stupid simple.

For a paddle mount, I just used the seat post clamp from the back refectorbon my bike. Nothing else needed. Super light and minimalistic
Just place the single tab at the bottom of the GoPro between the opening in the reflector mount and secure with the GoPro bolt.

Cant quite picture that so if you get a chance...

good point: thanks.
need to find some high density foam.

Surprised no one is making something like this?

Why do you like it better than handlebar mount?

This is my cheapy mount. I just drilled some holes in a stick-on base mount that comes with the GoPro. I wrap some electrical tape around the paddle shaft (not shown in the picture, I added it after) and zip-tie it each time I want to use it. Then just cut it off after. I mount it high enough so I don't hit the board with a deep paddle stroke. I've actually never hit the board with this setup. The zip-ties stick out less than on of those handle bar mounts.

Talldude:
do you think that stick on base could be heated and curved to fit better?

Simple question but what is the go Pro mount called that plugs into the nose of my board (Jimmy Lewis)?

And what do folks like best for handle mounts?

Any other favorite mounts? Helmet?

Thanks

Just looking for an inexspensive video camera for surfing so i can grab some vids of my kids in the surf.
Likely wont be using it much. But would like something that can take a decent image.
Are any of the cheap go pro knock offs any good?

saw this one:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PBYM1BC/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A2VOA5SWIDK369&psc=1

the other day in waikiki i was about to warn an obvious newbie woman wearing baggie shorts and a tshirt paddling out on a costco foam surfboard with some sort of kiddie paddle. It was double overhead on the bigger sets and i smelled trouble...just then she spun on a dime and took off on a perfect wave nearly getting barrelled... ???

Great thread. I have FCS fins but it’s great to learn about the physics of it all. I thought about buying a super tech but decided against it because of its slow wave performance.

And yes.  the ST is much like the STun Gun.  It needs a real wave (waist at least) for it to have fund as most of the speed generated is during the turns (Especially I have found the first bottom turn) not pointing it down the line.

My experience differentl.  My 7'10 St performs way better and faster than my SG down the line. Much faster in waves less than overhead. i love the control of the SG in big waves.

SUP General / what to do when you find yourself on the reef
« on: July 07, 2019, 12:48:41 PM »
yes, I know, the right answer is " dont find yourself on the reef"
but shit happens.
the other morning at high tide, the sun came up over the mountain and was right in my eyes. Add to that a perfect wave that made me greedy and not being able to see reef due to tide and sun and next thing you know i was in the reef. surrounded on all sides.
i bet it has happened to many here.

I got lucky. I fell as easily off my board as i could, tried to fall shallow, tried to float shallow. fortunately the next few waves were not huge ( the day was overhead) and 3 or 4 waves later and a few bumps and scrapes to my feet and chest i was able to extricate myself. My board escaped with only minor fin trauma.
It could have been MUCH worse.

I know that in these particular conditions of poor visibility venturing near reefs edge is not smart.
Just wondering if and when the worst happens you all handle it?
