Although I mostly SUP surf small board (7'7 and 8'0), I love catching some waves once in a while on a big board. I really like SIC 10'4 Recon: great glide, stable and pretty maneuverable with it thin rails and surf shape.

It's Battle of the Paddle Week ! Starboard, SUPRacer.com and TotalSUP are organizing a pretty cooooool contest: the Name Battle. Name the 2015 huge 8-paddler board designed by Mathieu Rauzier and which has just come out of the Starboard factory without a name...yet!
Starboard will pick the best name and the winner gets a brand new Tiki Tech Paddle!

Technique / Re: Surfing Raceboards is FUN!
« on: September 30, 2014, 02:52:53 AM »
Had a great session with a mate last week during Starboard Dealers Meeting in Spain. We woke up at 6 a. m., picked up the new (from 2015) All-Star 14'0 (him) and Race 14'0 (me) and paddle along the coast. As we were paddling back we saw some good clean and small waves and went for it. Really fun. And I didn't had the feeling of being on a 14'0 board.

I also had a couple of sessions with a SIC Bullet 12'6 SCC at my home spot on small days. And I can carve the beast!

Which FCS adapter did you use? Is it the green one? And which board do you have...2014? I bought the fcs adapter for my 8'5 naish and it was crap. Didn't fit right. Wondering if it will for starboard 2014?

I use this one: http://www.surffcs.com/shop/surf-accessories/longboard-box-adapter

Not a perfect fit, but it does the job well.

Also, all 2015 Starboard carbon boards come with deck pad, except for the Pro range (tail pad and optional pad for each specific model: 7'7, 8'0, 8'5, etc.

Great board! I've owned a few 8'0 pro (2012 AST Silver, 2013 BC, 2014 BC). They are really great boards to surf; light, stable and super fast and responsive. I donīt like the Startouch either. It will only work when you wear booties. I use wax and a tail pad (if you get you back foot on the kicker, the board will explode on turns). The wax doesn't stick as well as in a fiber surfboard so you have to constantly was the board.

I'm 68/70 kgs and I find it stable even in 20 knots conditions. So I'm going to upgrade to the 2015 7'7 BC (95 lts). I'm going to put the new deck pad available for SB pro boards and they come already with a tail pad.

But the 8'0 will take you to super fun top to bottom surf, with critical moves maintaining speed (it's fast!). I find that the 7'7 has a better response air dropping after a fast critical move on the lip (it's shorter...)

Thanks for the reply. A few questions for you...

Do you ever find the wax annoying? I too have had to wax it before each session. It seems to get all over my chest (no wetsuit) paddle, paddle handle, my shorts, etc. kind of a mess. Considering just getting a pad for it. Wonder if theres any downside to a pad..?

Also, in bigger waves, it's so fast, while still obviously manuverable, I'm finding it harder to do aggressive turns and snaps just because there's so much speed. I'm kind of thinking this is just going to take some getting used to..

Any thoughts?

Wax is really annoying. My paddle is full of wax and I have to constantly wax the board, since it doesn't stick as in a surfboard. But I find it grips better than a pad, and that's a great advantage in choppy conditions.

As for bigger waves, try playing with your fins. I normally use the 4.5'' standard side fins that came with the board and use a surf fin in the rear (same size) with an FCS adapter. I also like it with quad fins, but I use the 4.5'' (front) and 3.7'' rear. I heavier surf I use the  2+1 fins that came with the board. But if you want more grip in the heavier stuff you can use a quad (e.g.: 4.5'' front and 4.5'' rear.

Gear Talk / Re: WIDTHS OF BOARDS BEING SURFED
« on: September 05, 2014, 08:18:11 AM »
Hi guys. Been following this forum for a long time but only registered today.

I'm 37 and weight 70 kgs (154 lbs) and I'm 1,80 m (5'10'').

I ride a 8'0 x 28'' (Starboard Pro Brushed Carbon). I can keep my balance in every conditions (even plus 20 knots) and I already ordered a 7'7 x 27'' (from 2015 Starboard)...

Earlier this year I went to Bali on a SUP trip. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to bring my 8'0, so I had to settle with a 7'4 x 32'' Starboard from 2012 (Thanks you, Rip Curl School of Surfing in Sanur). At first, I found it extremely difficult to turn, but I made the most of the Indonesian perfection, and I dialed that thing after just a few waves. Albeit the width and thickness I made some really critical and vertical turns. The downside was that when I surfed hollow waves, it was difficult to fit it in the barrel or keeping a high line on a barrel. But those days, changed my conception on wider boards and improved my surfing.
