Creek,  the footage from 9 minutes on where the camera is nose mounted gives a cool miniature perspective.   You look shrunken,  but somehow still able to turn the board.   Great wipe out shot !   JP

I agree with Pono's idea on the mylar.  I have made composite shafts using that sort of method.

I wouldn't use anything inside of the tube except something non-structural to hold it in place.   Fixed many a fishing pole.  See this and the next 4 pics to the right:  http://www.pbase.com/jaypetersen/image/138393259

electrical tape makes a great "vacuum bag"   it has stretch and keeps pressure on it.   Wrap it slow.   Poke holes in it if it's retaining epoxy.  Repair shown is staggered  carbon cloth.  Unidirectional can also be used.   Bobbin and thread used to hold in place as you lay it up wetting out as you go.  Tape comes off clean when your done.   Be sure to heat treat the epoxy (This is important)  120 degrees for a few hours or higher if you know the epoxy specs.

Gear Talk / Re: Paddle flex - Kialoa insanity adjustable

Mitchell,   I will try shortening the paddle and see how it feels flex wise.   Also I have never tried to fine-tune the length at all,  I just set it to 6'4 and go.   So not sure how it will feel length wise.   I have been trying to keep my variables to a minimum as I am learning.   Some times i find myself not gripping the t-handle and just the shaft below,   happens when I am trying to get a quick pull in with waves or whitewater coming at me.  (and that doesn't feel bad in terms of length)

but the pull at the reach is more valuable than pull at the end of the stroke

That makes sense.

I should avoid trying out someone's carbon paddle for a while or I will realize that I need a better one.   Those ke Nalu x-tuff's look like a good value for 300$.

DavidJohn,   are you happy with the size of the paddle blade ?  (I assume the carbon version has the same blade size I do)

Gear Talk / Paddle flex - Kialoa insanity adjustable
« on: April 18, 2015, 09:47:16 PM »
Hello everyone,   I have been using a Kialoa insanity adjustable,  91sq in blade.   I am tall,  6'4" so using it extended almost all the way.   It's all I know,  starting my second year surfing with a 9ft 150 ltr board.   The paddle seems to flex a lot when I dig in a few strokes to catch a wave.   My body type is thin (170lb),  not a muscle man by any means.
What is the performance implications of the flex ?   Am I getting this energy back ?  Does the flex help in any way or take away from my wave catching power?  It's a fiberglass shaft,  I can see the flex to the point that don't pull as hard as I could.    I really don't want to change what I am using till I am good enough to know what I want,  and also question the blade area for the surfing.

Any input is appreciated.  JP

Will show my wife that article tonight.   Pretty funny,  though she might not think so.

Replace surfer with: SUP, Windsurf, Ski, and Fishing and you pretty much have 1/2 the human male population covered.

I think sealion uses a rocker closer to a windsurfer than a SUP.

Sealion has continuous rocker,  and a lot of it.   Nothing like a windsurfer,  which is why it doesn't plane real fast.   Chop kills the speed,  but it loves to catch waves and turn on them.   I have the XL.   Great board to have if you look at waves over wind.   I think it paddle surfs pretty well,  but don't have much to compare it to.

Wind cranked up in RI today.  Shots from two different venues.   Guy in the kayak did amazing for having a 30kt sideshore wind,  thought he was going downwind for sure.

Season opener for me on Friday.   My wife had a massage booked at 11,  so I checked out 1st beach ...  looked kind of choppy,  side-side-on at 8mph.   Second beach was almost dead onshore at 11mph,  the surfing didn't look great.   Back to 1st beach rigged a 5.7 sail and Sealion.   Gingerly coasted out a walking speed,  made it over most of the waves,  4-6ft not bad I could have paddled it I think.   Gybed,  caught a big wave outside,  great ride all the way in .   Repeat again,  hey this is kind of easy and nice.   3rd time out I get crushed by an outside wave and no wind.   Got worked all the way in for about 15 minutes.   Took a 20min break to regain my composure.   Few more runs in and out,  quite nice but wind was dying.   All in all about 45 min on the water.   Conditions looked good at 2nd later in the afternoon,   snapped a few shots.  Wasn't a water sports mission,  so I was pretty happy to get out for a bit.
This one of you guys ? (from Sat when it started raining a bit)
Sat am was pretty big.  Wife and I watched some good action at 2nd beach and Ruggles.   Some waves close to double overhead.

SSW swell direction is asking for the impossible at 3rd I guess.   Maybe fri am might be windsurfable for me at 2nd before it gets too big.   I don't know how forecasts usually pan out for the Newport beaches,   but 7-8ft swell prediction ends up being higher at south county or outer cape cod.   Out of my league for now.    BI buoy report is where i usually check to see what's there.

Stoneaxe,   was looking at some charts of the 3rd beach area.   Think any waves would wrap around to the north side of the beach (peabody's)  if it's huge surf ?  Can you tell i'm itching to get out ?

Yes,  I see the forecast going in the direction of actual windsurfing and staying SW thru saturday.   Will figure out what to bring with me right before I leave.   Second beach looks really good to sup-sail in a NW wind for side off.   Was really hoping to try that with the original forecast going NW on Friday.   I try to save my paddling for light wind days less than 10mph, but switch between the sail and paddle sometimes just for practice.  Or to torture myself.

Thx for the advice,  Jay
