SUP General / Heading to SoCAL tomorrow: SUP Rental Options
« on: February 21, 2015, 05:43:40 AM »
I spoke to Mitch (Mitches Surf Shop in La Jolla) yesterday to see what assortment of SUPs he has for rent and learned he's got quite a few Jimmy Lewis' and Riverias'.  I remember him seeming a little surprised that I was riding an 11'x31 (NSP Element) SUP in east coast small stuff - surprise as related to the length.  I gather from last years conversation that he's a small SUP guy and it sounds like he's a got a good number of rentals in the 7-9' range.  I explained my skill level (I can catch small-ish wave fairly easily on the NSP and ride down the line without great difficulty), but that if I where to go with a shorter board I need something pretty stable and likely in the 32-33" width range.  My primary goal is to hit the water running and have fun and not spend all my time falling off and trying to balance on something I have no business being on.  Mitch is great about switching out boards so there is that option but I'd prefer not to running back and forth to the shop.

Curious if anyone can reco what to look for (better model for my ability as briefly described above) in either of these brands, and another SUP rental shop in the area that might be an option if I strike out at Mitches. Thanks!

SUP General / On-water Universal "Zoner" signal?
« on: February 16, 2015, 01:57:00 PM »
I'm thinking maybe a universal "Zoner" signal is in order for use in the water to identify fellow brethren.

Sure, there's the "Oar-on" t-shirts and all which are great and have likely led to several a conversation/introduction in a parking lot with two Zoner's, or more, meeting for the first time(????)

So how about some super secret gesture while on the water that instantly recognizes one as "zoner'?  Should be super low key/stealth-like - which upon extending the gesture is returned, clearly identifies membership.

I'm not advocating anything like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eG9i7d8yfKQ

but maybe a paddle blade slap with the hand.

Half serious, but I do think it'd be kinda cool.....I can only imagine what's about to come......

Okay, maybe I'm officially cray cray....I'll blame it on 30 years of active duty!

SUP General / The Wifey would move back to RI in a heartbeat....
« on: February 16, 2015, 04:57:30 AM »
.....and I think I could be talked into it pretty easily.

She grew up in Newport about a 5 min walk from 1st Beach and still has a lot of family in Newport, Middletown, and over in Narragansett.  We visit for a couple of weeks each summer and that's where I get the bulk of my SUP surfing in (1st and 2nd Beaches).  We're in Annapolis, MD these days which actually reminds us of Newport quite a bit (minus the mansion's on Bellevue Ave).  Anyway, we're already talking about looking around Middletown on the first visit this year....could be interesting!

Gear Talk / SUP Rental in SoCAL
« on: February 13, 2015, 06:38:22 AM »
I'm heading to La Jolla next Sunday for work and will have a few hours here and there to get in the water for a few days over the course of the week - ankle willing (long story, but in short I REALLY cranked my ankle falling down some stairs several days ago and am still popping motrin and hobbling) - and curious as to SUP rental reco's(?)

I really want to try a 9'5" Allwave (HRS) and a comparable size Hammer.  I usually rent longboards from Mitches in La Jolla and I know he rents SUP's but I'm not sure of his collection....I'm waiting to hear back on my email to him.

Any suggestions?

Gear Talk / Silverfish Glasses
« on: February 01, 2015, 05:01:41 AM »
Just a quick note to pass along that I purchased a prescription set of Silverfish sunglasses at the beginning of last season (S Rat 2 model) and I have been EXTREMELY impressed with the product.  A bit pricey, but man do they make being on the water nice!!!  I've lost several a contact len's overtime....but no longer.  I've take quite a few face plants with the glasses on and they have never dislodged or fallen off.  I think this model is pretty stylish so even wear them to outdoor events.  For me (near sighted) they've been outstanding!

Do yourself a HUGE favor and look into them if you've been shedding your eyeglasses/contacts before hitting the water.  I purchased the gray polarized for a modest bump up to my prescription and I'm gonna purchase a "transitions" pair before the spring for cloudy days.

Check em out at www.silverfish.com

(disclaimer:  I have zero affiliation with this company....just an EXTREMELY happy customer!)

Sessions / Go-Pro Alternatives?
« on: January 31, 2015, 05:25:54 AM »
Got a good lively thread going next door on use of Go-Pro's but I realize that there's likely many others who self-film with other (cheaper) alternatives to the Go-Pro camera........Let's hear from you folks as too what gear pros/cons as compared to Go-Pro and others, and most importantly, please share your SUP-surfing self-film results !!

Look forward to hearing/seeing your reviews!!!

Sessions / Recording Sessions w/ a GoPro
« on: January 30, 2015, 05:50:45 AM »
I know David John and a few others have done great work in capturing SUP surfing time on the water so look forward to their thoughts/expertise on my following question:

I'll be renting a SUP and paddle for a trip out west later next month and plan to bring along my GoPro in order to capture some footage of myself.  Question is, as I'll be renting its not like I can affix my GoPro to the board (unless the rental has a mount) nor the paddle.  So, what would you recommend?  A chest mount, headmount, other?

Thanks!

SUP General / Are you a Seasonal SUP'er?
« on: January 20, 2015, 03:50:27 PM »
I'm gonna blame SuptheCreek for inspiring me to start this post given his fantastic "Smoking Hot Waves" thread under "Sessions"!   ;)

Here I'm sitting in the mid-Atlantic (Annapolis, MD) waiting for spring to, well, "spring"!  Water temp here in the Chesapeake Bay is a balmy 39 degrees (F)....and I can't fathom the thought of getting in water temps sub-60's....brrrrr!  Yet 350 miles or so to the north STC and a bunch of Cape Codder's are having the time of their lives!  (And I'm a native of Massachusetts - the western end (Berkshires) to boot)!

My SUP surfing is limited to trips to Newport, RI, for a few visits each summer (~10-20 sessions), and an annual trip to San Diego (La Jolla) each Feb/Mar.  My full 3/2 wetsuit works perfectly for both....although in August/Sept up in RI I find myself quite comfortable with shorts and a sun shirt especially in the afternoons.

I'm sure I'm missing out on LOT's of quality SUP'ing!!!  So, maybe STC and my fellow Yankees up north can talk this geezer into expanding my SUP season!   ;D

SUP General / Define "Competent" Swimmer
« on: January 09, 2015, 12:38:56 PM »
Just curious as to what folks generally think of when defining a competent swimmer - with respect to reasonable safety to engage in SUP surfing.  Of course, I realize this depends on conditions to include currents, wave height, etc. But generally speaking, lets say for the sake of argument we're talking a beach break that's typically in the wave height range of 2-4'.  What do you think the average persons swimming competency/ability should be before venturing out?

Using myself as an example, I have tremendous respect for the ocean and its power and know my limits.  I'm a bit of a geezer (53) in good health and can swim 500 yards or so (various strokes) without a lot of difficulty.....having said that, I find myself pretty much sticking within the parameters I outlined in the above (beach break/2-4') as I'm only two seasons into the sport.

Interested in thoughts......
