NorthEast / Northeast Surf Cam Site Status
« on: November 29, 2016, 08:53:41 AM »
Just heard back from Ronnie at Northeastsurfing.com and he indicated they expect to be back up later today....they're been down for a couple of days as a result of a website hack.  Didn't realize how much I've come to appreciate this site.   8)

NorthEast / Looking for an old wooden surfboard...
« on: November 01, 2016, 03:44:50 PM »
Wifey is interested in trying to find an old vintage wooden surfboard (and refinish, if necessary) in order to hang in our new place in RI.  Anybody got any ideas/leads as to where I might be able to find one?  PM me if any insight/thoughts/leads.

Thanks

SUP General / Posting a Video?
« on: November 01, 2016, 08:26:47 AM »
In the past I've been able to post a video and have it show in the actual thread but it seems lately that just the url is showing after I hit post (ref Happy Halloween: Funny Vid post form yesterday).  WTH!  What's the tried and true procedure to get an image or video to display as part of the post?  I do see the Mona Lisa looking icon (above the smiley face and below the "B"old icon for image as well as the insert hyperlink just to the right but I don't think I've successfully used those in the past.

Thanks!!!

Random / Anybody Catch this Limited Beatles Release?
« on: September 21, 2016, 06:33:48 PM »
Trailer looks/looked REALLY good! Especially considering Ron Howard.   I'd love to see it but gotta say it appears to be just some great moments followed by (what appears to be) a depressing collapse of an amazing group of young men riding a wave so very few get a chance to ride.....

Anybody see it? Thoughts?

Gear Talk / SUS Leash Preference?
« on: August 17, 2016, 11:25:22 AM »
In my recent crazed obsession with wanting to really put forth an effort to learn how to nose ride I've been rethinking the whole leash thing - again.  I know there are 4 options....well really just 3; ankle, calf, or waist....I'll not consider the 4th option, no leash, a viable option.

So with that, for easily moving up and back freely w/ minimal tangles, twists, and turns what are you guys going to these days?  Seems like waist leash discussion/use has waned a bit...at least in terms of discussion here on the forum.  For actively moving about I know the only two real options are either waist or calf...in that order.  Probably answered my own question but I'm really interested in hearing what you guys like/dis-like these days!  Any insight into make/model, etc. would be great!

SUP General / NEVER use foam pool noodles for soft rack!
« on: July 30, 2016, 02:53:50 PM »
SERIOUS lesson learned early this am...

I set off for a short (5 min) drive to 1st Beach in Newport (RI) this am and decided to use two pool noodles on top of my SUV and lash my board down with my Kanulock straps.  While proceeding down the road at approx. 35-40mph the light ahead turned yellow so I braked to come to a controlled stop...as the vehicles momentum slowed to 5mph or so the board flew forward lifting off and crashing to the asphalt approx. 15' ahead of the vehicle.  Thank goodness no one was in front of me!  at the very least it would have landed on another vehicle or potentially blasted thru a window.  I threw my flashers on and jumped out feeling like I could vomit thinking my Fanatic Allwave was seriously trashed!  Below are a couple of pics....showing minimal (surface) damage to the rail and one of the side bite fin tips shaved off by 1/2 inch or so.  Again, the stop was controlled and not really abrupt....I was shocked to see the board fly forward.  The board was snugged with the straps, fins forward.  I noted afterwards (putting the links of the failure chain together) that the top of the car was wet with dew, as was the board which stayed out overnight, the foam noodle pieces were dry....  The board was strapped with 2 straps..one forward, one back....the front strap was aft of the fins....all of which resulted in ultimately allowing the board to propel forward.

Lesson learned, the above noodle setup was the perfect conveyor belt for launching the board forward. I felt like a complete morn and realize how likely I am to have not damaged another vehicle or person.  I'll never use this setup again!  Seriously reco against noodles as any sort of soft rack setup...

I'm incredibly lucky!!!! and the Allwave is rock solid have suffered minimal damage!  That was close!  Phew!

Random / Hurricane Season.....pretty cool office
« on: June 06, 2016, 10:45:06 AM »
Received a couple of pics from a buddy/fellow officer recently who shared the below/attachments after talking about TS Colin earlier today.  Fun times with these folks for sure!   Although primarily a ship guy in my career I spent several assignments in my latter years working and getting to know some pretty talented folks.  I know the NOAA Hurricane Hunters as well as the gang from the USAF 53rd out of Kessler are happiest flying these missions.  They all do an amazing job at keeping folks on the beach safe.

and some pics and getting some stick time...

Gear Talk / Which Tail Handle?
« on: June 05, 2016, 06:50:25 AM »
I know in the past this topic has been beat to smithereens, but I'm wondering what you guys are thinking/reco'ing nowadays....

I want to pick up/install a couple and would appreciate any suggestions - preferably w/ pics!  My only desire is to avoid possibility of finger wrap, so no ropes/lines please!  Also, not opposed to carving out a kickpad.  As far as the latter, I just haven't been able to find one that's got decent vertical height.

Thanks!   8) 8) 8)

NorthEast / Water Brothers Closing Shop End of May!
« on: May 12, 2016, 10:24:19 AM »
Clearly an end of an era.......sad.  The good news is Sid is gonna concentrate on promoting his apparel brand and surf-related events including the hugely popular Surf Fest events.  I've always try to make it a point to swing by and say hello and pick up a shirt or something when in time.  Sid knows I'm a SUP'er and has always been kind and genuinely interested in taking water sports, etc.

Here's a pretty cool podcast...enjoy.
