Beasho uses a waist leash with what he calls a "chicken loop"--plastic loops sewn to velcro of the waist leash, which allows quick grab/ditch if need be.

lapa rios? loved matapalo, and also baby beach right out front, when matapalo was too much for me--which it can be when ramping

used the resort's boards (prone)--they had a couple of decent longboards

stoney--sounds like the old "i fell on a bush" explanation when a guy shows up at work with a clawed up face.

me: 10 stitches along eyebrow from a board whack when i was, like, 10 yo--i'll spare you the deets--the scar is obvious.

injured or not, you got waves sunday--nuttin in any of my usual haunts for too long---coming wknd seems unlikely too.

badger--this has been argued about in the past, but i use two pieces of string, on slightly longer than the other. the tensioned string fails, the other has been relaxing, awaiting its moment of glory! i wrap the two with a bit of 3m electrical tape to keep from catching a toe or finger in there.

i rolled a 3" piece of epoxy putty and stuck it in there--quick sand with a sponge sander--huge improvement--those handles blow hardest when walking distance in wind, exhausted, after a long sesh.

newbies dont get how quickly weather can change, and how quickly a board can blow or be swept out of one's reach.

my kids go out on the LI sound on my boards and i bore them to death with leash lectures--but when i describe (and they listen (i hope)) circumstances where their board could easily get away from them, they get it.

i got very upset (overreacted as I am "prone" to do) one day when a daughter paddled in with no leash and the excuse that it had been left at home and she didnt want to hassle to go get it.

i also lecture that they stay with the board at all costs if swept away, paddle retained or not. i explain that they should not trust their judgement of a swimmable distance and that they should stay with (hopefully floating on top of)the board. paddle on knees, prone paddle if paddle lost, or just float, and wait for rescue or to be seen by a boat.
