This year I tested a smaller area version of the Kawa, going to be called the Terra.
This fin worked very, very well.  Amazed at how well it tracks for how small it is.

Hello,
Would you mind giving more comments regarding difference between the Kawa and the Terra outside of the obvious smaller surface published on the web site.
It looks like the Terra is already available (in Canada).

Cheers,

Luc

Also sent you a PM regarding exchanging a Kohini 95 blade for your Kohini 84 blade if you are not interested in the Maliko from Riordie first.

I have attached a lease to tie to the board as the unit does not float and can be knocked off the supplied mount when changing sides paddling.

I glued a small square of hard foam with a slit on the blue tab that secure the release mechanism. This should prevent a release if knocking the tab while switching paddle in bad conditions. It takes a lot more pressure to release the tab now.

Luc, does the Makai also give average speed?

During paddling there is two options:
1) current speed (I do not remember the sampling rate)
2) current speed + distance + time elapsed (I am assuming that it is not displayed by default because it might require inquire power consumption)

After paddling you can see the average speed and the maximum speed of the session.
Distance and time are reset to zero.

Luc

I also have a speedcoach to see real time speed. (because I spoil myself rotten). I got 35 tracks this year from this setup to analyse later with GPS action replay.

I have a Makai to see real time speed. (because I spoil myself rotten). :-)
I have a small $60 Doppler GPS Canmore 102+ in a waterproof pouch to record tracks and speed that can be dowmloaded for analysis with same software.

The Makai pushes me to keep the cadence up during the paddle and the data try to convince me that I am making some progresses going faster.....

Yes we need a lot more 2015 Rogue Downwind boards in Canada so that there are some in the used market soon for the paupers:-)
It I had the funds I would be ordering a 14x27 right now with nice customs colors orange and dark grey with brushed carbon finish...one can dream....

I heard from Rogue that if you want a 2016 board from a Canadian retailer, you may have to order it now for Spring delivery to the retailer. I'm tempted to order the 2016 Downwind model, but it's hard for me to justify 2 downwind boards.

Well 2016 is a difficult year to order a board for Canadians.
I think that the JL Rail is going for CAD 3.5K before tax.
Not sure what the distributor quoted you for the Downwind R1?
If based on US retail of USD 2.4K plus $200 to account for shipping USD 2.6K * 1.35 = CAD 3.5K before tax.
I just cannot buying any board for that much money :-)

Cheers,

Luc

I received a brief reply from Rogue indicating that the 2015 Downwind 14x27 is 29 lbs almost the same than Dimitries' 14x26 at 28.5 lbs.
29 lbs for a durable 288L downwind board sounds pretty good in my book. Nothing to be ashamed off, not sure why it is not published.

I know the Production Manager for Rogue and he told me that the carbon construction should be about 25lbs for a 14' board while the fiberglass version would be about 30lbs but these were approximate figures.  I asked about the 14x25 Downwind model.

If you want to order a 2016 model for spring delivery, you'll likely need to order before Christmas and ideally mid December.

So 2015 14x26 is 28.5 lbs (DK) and 2016 14x25 25lbs (Argosi) , this should put the 2015 14x27 around 30 lbs mark.
I do not think that I would order a board this season with the weak CAD and shipping from the USA it puts new boards for us in Canada at a heavy price.
I will just keep my eyes open for a used/demo 2015 14x27 if any show-up in Canada.

Cheers,

Luc

I have asked the weight messaging on their FB page but have not heard anything back yet. I guess that it might not be the best selling feature.

Maybe dk can get us the weights of the different constructions and widths?

Dimitris is riding a custom board 26" so it is likely lighter than factory 27" but might give some indication maybe.

I'll keep you guys filled in as things progress. Currently the blade design is done but we haven't done much in the way of testing yet, hopefully very soon though.

What you really need is a beginner using the new blade during the winter :-) and that can compare to the K84 and K95 having both.....

Luc

Actually the Konihi 84 is considerably faster than the 95 for me, and I greatly prefer bigger blades. It's not a little difference, it's ridiculously big, and it's really irritating to me because I like the way the 95 feels a lot more. the 84 feels like I'm not doing anything. I have a hard time maintaining that higher speed because I'm not naturally a higher cadence paddler, but it's pretty much all I race with now. If I can maintain my focus I go quite a bit faster. Start picking daisies and it's slower.

I suspect a 90 would be somewhere in the middle for speed. If you want to max out your speed, try the 84, and then focus on keeping it working.

Not that I am any kind of authority to speak but I noticed the same thing than Bill. The K84 on the 100stiff is faster than the K95 on the Xstuff as long as I am maintaining cadence but it slows down radically compered to the K95 if going at a very leisurely pace. I get faster maximum time on 100m all been equal.
Other bonus, it is not hard on the shoulder even with the stiffer shaft.
I am a light guy at only 165 lbs.
On the other hand, I do not get the same acceleration from stop with the K84, the K95 brings a little bit more humph and I would choose it for downwinding instead of the K84 for when you just want the board going on a couple of strokes. Not to say that you cannot get a good work-out with the K84 when going at it like sprinting. It does not feel unsubstantial at all.

Thank you very much Dimitris, really useful information.
The 2015 I was looking at is not R1 so weight 33 lbs which I am not interested in.
Cheers,
Luc

Do you know what the weight of the R1 construction is?  I did not see it listed on the Rogue website.

I do not and that is my gripe with Rogue. They do not show the weights.
The 2013 Rogue Rage at 245L is about 28 lbs.
The 2015 Downwinder R1 at 288L is likely to be at or above that weight unless there has been some big improvement in the type of construction and material used.

Cheers,

Luc

Hello DK78,
What are the practical differences in your opinion between the older design (Rage 245L) and the newer design (Downwind 288L)?
I think that you had the Rage in 27" before and now the Downwind in 26"?

Cheers,

Luc

Hi Luc,

The practical differences between the old and the new board are the speed and the stability. When i had made the order i was questioning myself if I have made the right choice, because the previous model was already very fast and stable. I think that the old Rage and the Bullet V2 have the same feeling, they catch easily the bumps and surf nice from the tail.
But the new Rogue downwind is at another level in my opinion. Basically this board never stops, it is always on glide. It catches the bumps easily and most importantly, it never looses speed when you hit the back of the bump in front of you, it just keeps moving. The new concept in the nose design works very good.
About stability, when you are on planning it’s a lot more stable than the previous as it has more litres in the tail, but, there is a but :) the old was a little easier to surf it from the tail. The new one has no problem at all but it needs a little more pressure from the rear foot. Basically i prefer the thicker tail as it gives me more confidence when i am on full speed and the board still turns pretty easy.
I think these are the main differences. If someone else had the chance to ride the board i would like to hear his thoughts.

Cheers
Dimitris
