Foil SUP / Foil Setup Questions
« on: July 24, 2019, 10:44:25 AM »
Team Foilers,
If you had the choice, which would you choose for 2-5 foot swell at say 10 seconds: (See Below)

Conditions:
These a mashed up piles(2-5 foot, 10-15 second period) that are often white by the time we are dropping. Definitely foilable.

Rider Skill level:
I am able to get up onto the wing IWA 170 on 93% of the waves I attempt. Here I have been able to fly up to 400+ yards on a 3-4 foot wave. Total flights, roughly 60-80.

Board:
Starboard Hypernut 7'4x30 106L

Rider
Handsome, 160LBS depending on time of day.

_________________________________________________
1) Long mast or short? (assume depth is not an issue.)

2) Small, Medium or larger wing (for example IWA 160, 170 or Maliko 200)? (Rider weight ~160LBS)

3) Trimmed Maliko Tail wing, or stock Maliko tail wing?

I find my IWA 170 to be faster in the wave and also catching the wave but the latter may be in my head. I tried the 200 and it seemed sluggish so I moved back to the 170. I also have a IWA 160 that I am going to try.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Foil SUP / Tuttle to Channel/track Adapter
« on: June 24, 2019, 01:39:53 PM »
Team Foilers,
Anyone have any experience with the Tuttle to Channel or track adapters?

Looks like there was a first gen model or two that grew taller/deeper in the more recent versions. I can imagine why.

Mainly want to know if the deep tuttle adapters are legit. Meaning no wobble etc.

This looks like the standard one:

Here is the deep tuttle. I am leaning towards this but want to know if it works appropriately.

Foil SUP / Foil stall meter - idea
« on: April 13, 2019, 12:34:30 PM »
Anyone ever considered a meter on top of the board that was some hybrid between a level and a depth gauge for the foil?

We have all seen and experienced when the foil breaches the water on leading edge of wing. (FACE SLAM). I was just watching pono's post in the wind powered section and was reminded of this idea.

Maybe something like this would be mounted on the front of the board and help folks keep the foil down below the water. After a while you would not look at it.

I believe it would help learning foiling, and then adjusting to new mast lengths etc.

In theory it would have the ability to determine:
Pitch
Roll
Foil Depth

I am not sure yaw applies here but it hurts my brain to go there.

What do you think?

Foil SUP / Prone Foil Rig
« on: April 07, 2019, 09:58:27 AM »
What is your favorite prone foil setup? Board and wing?

When you respond, know that I know how to surf(well) and are a beginner stand up foiler.

I have a decent Stand up foil rig (IWA 170) and Hypernut 7'0 or 7'4 , I forget. And am looking for a prone foil rig that my buddy and I can start trying.

I am 150LBS at 6 foot and my buddy is 5'2 at 130 something lbs.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts team foilers.

Gear Talk / Handle - Naish like
« on: March 19, 2018, 04:42:51 PM »
Folks,
Any recommendations on handles that are similar to the Naish handles with regards to size? Here size means big and fat enough to slip my fingers in **WITH** 5mil gloves..  :)

My buddy is building me a new standie and I want a handle like they use in my Naish boards.

Thanks in advance for any knowledge transfer.

Gear Talk / surfco textured rail tape
« on: May 16, 2016, 08:02:14 PM »
Unfortunately one of my new boards is real chippy and I am considering rail tape. I ordered some SurfCo Rail tape.. I thought I did not order "smooth" and ended up with "textured".

Anyway.. I am thinking I need "smooth" because this texture looks like it is going to slow me down.. because I haul so much ass.

What thinks you, zone?

-thanks

SUP General / Hokua Raptor LE
« on: January 25, 2016, 12:21:47 PM »
Folks,
I am considering the Hokua Raptor LE v116.

Anybody have any experience with one? The only thing I am worried about is the fat tail, but I have no idea what I am talking about so, maybe I am not worried :)

I want to mash up smaller waves and would be riding other boards in my tube sessions. ;)

Let me know, thanks!

SoCal / Stick Friendly Breaks and Rental Shop near Torrence CA
« on: August 03, 2015, 08:11:51 AM »
Folks,
I am going to be working in Torrence, CA on and off for the next 8 weeks, Tues-Thursday. Looks like its close to Redondo, Manhattan and other beaches..

Any breaks around there stick friendly?

Any rental shops that would rent me a smaller board and stick? I ride an 8'3 with a 74 inch stick. I am OK with adjustable paddle.

Would bring wetsuit and can imagine surfing dawn patrol and or after 5 PM in the evenings.

I live in Oregon and would reciprocate any aloha that comes my way when folks head north.

Thanks in advance.

Technique / My leash likes to hug my paddle
« on: July 16, 2015, 08:03:26 AM »
Goofy footed, Drop in( a left) bottom turn and wam, my paddle is wrapped up in my leash. I then have limited paddle movement until I slide the paddle up and remove it from the leash. Not the end of the world but its annoying..

PS: have tried my leash on both legs. In this case it is on my left (back foot).

Any tips from the pros?

thanks

SUP General / Swimming pool SUPPing
« on: May 13, 2015, 04:49:37 PM »
This feels strange to post..

I have my longest board attached to my coil leash, then attached to the diving board in my back yard pool. The coiled leash allows me to apply consistent pressure against the diving board while paddling. Here I am basically paddling in place for some period of time. Trust me when I say a static rope was awkward.

Question: From being around pools most of my adult life, I am aware that chlorine has its way with anything it touches. I don't want to trash my board or my paddle but I am loving the workout sessions I am getting in the back yard, free of wind and what not..

Anyone use a surfboard and or paddle in a pool for extended periods and seen any damage?

I rinse off my paddle after but am often times wanting to just leave the board in the pool ready for my next sesh.

What thinks you?

PS: I will try to post a pic as I imagine it is funny looking.. I am guessing my neighbors think I am swimming REALLY fast.

SUP General / Beveled Rails
« on: February 25, 2015, 12:41:49 PM »
All,
I recently picked up a used FOne Anakao. So far I am having fun on the board, but I am questioning the beveled rail configuration.
Here are my thoughts, Please let me know if anyone has had experience with beveled rails.
1) In the wave the rails are more approachable.. The board seems to roll into the rail, and then easily roll to the other rail.
-Downside here is that it feels sometimes like it might slide into the rail. Maybe this is in my head.
2) No matter what, if I eject and have to swim the board ends up upside down.. every friggin time..
-no idea what is going on here.. I guess I will try to swim less.. Someone said it might be the swallow tail.. did not make sense to me.
3) Chop handling. (while paddling out and waiting for a wave.. not surfing)
-I believe that this board does not handle choppy conditions as well as my traditional shaped boards.
--in my head I am thinking the chop can pass under the board via the exposed beveled rails.
---here I feel like a shark is pulling my leash around, jerking me, and turning the board.

Anyway.. I have surfed it about 10 times and caught plenty of waves, but overall It just feels looser or more wobbly. I am running a 2+1 fin configuration with the stock 7.0 fin. Now that I am typing this out I am thinking a longer / larger longboard fin might help this board behave..

On the fence here.. having fun.. kind of an experiment.

PS: I surf in Oregon and frequently the conditions are adverse.. rough water, quick fast, nasty looking waves..

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

SUP General / Boot/Glove Drying Rig
« on: September 29, 2014, 12:18:31 PM »
I have spent a good bit of time in the last 8 years drying wet motorcycle boots, but lately I am drying wet booties and gloves after surfing. I have several rigs but none even worthy of a picture. I am using small fans, dowels, milk crates and PVC.

Will post pics when I land on something worthy. Not proud of anything lately and its always a rig.

Those who wear them, how are you drying booties and gloves? (pics pls).
Thanks in advance,
