or we go to Costco and rent a foamy for couple days and return it before we fly back home. Oahu was perfect for that, friends will pick up Wavestorm at Miliaini and return that on the way to airport.

I see a ton of barely used, nothing wrong with, but still returned WaveStorms stacked up at our nearest Costco...

I thought you were supposed to break them before you get a refund. Here is your JOB, who started all that idea.

Hey, if you go, and take the family and friends to go surf Pipe on them, and break them....then by all means you deserve that refund.

But believe me, this returning/"renting" surfboards, beach toys, and other sun essentials began looong before you think Jaime supposedly "started all that idea".

I gotta say though, you certainly are on a roll, and won't let common sense or decent dignity get in your way.

Have a nice trip nonetheless.  Too bad you're on such a tight budget, that you can't afford to just buy the boards at Costco for the $99, use them for a week (<$15/day "rental"), and then just give them to some local kids to enjoy the rest of the year...instead of screwing a retailer just trying to do the right thing to keep their customers happy.

Takes all kinds I guess.

Infriggincredible.....let's take advantage of one of the few companies that put it's customers' happiness with a product it sells (not to mention the customer's supposed honesty, and integrity), above just selling items at a discount, and then screw the customer after purchase if something is faulty with the product as many stores do....and what to they get for it?

Some a-hole openly admitting as if it's some brilliant plan on their part, that fvcking a company for having such a generous policy is the way to go.

Same kinda dickwads who bought a new TV that they then returned when a newer, latest, greatest model that they now thought they should be able to get for free no matter how many days they'd enjoyed their previous one...are the ones who forced Costco to change their return policy on electronics to now only 90 day for the rest of their honest customers who might actually have a real problem with their TV in the first year, and now have to jump through the same hoops for getting it repaired, or replaced as they would at any of the other big box retailers....which can be a PITA if it happens at all.

I see a ton of barely used, nothing wrong with, but still returned WaveStorms stacked up at our nearest Costco...which also just happens to be about a mile from Doho (along with boogie boards, beach chairs, and umbrellas)....making it the perfect "free rental/borrow spot" for these types of the disrespectful, a$$hat, out-of-towners we see at our local beaches.  These are typically the same ones who leave trash all over expecting someone else to clean up after them, and who think their couple of days at the spot are more important than anyone else's around them, whether on the sand or in the water.

Zero respect for anyone that actually thinks it's a great plan to take advantage of someone's good nature, and/or generous return policy; apparently it's just not a SoCal disease, but has spread to HI also....and that's a shame.  >:( >:( >:(

We're not the only ones noticing, and concerned for the park.  From the San Onofre Surf Club.....

Quote
2016 President Letter

To Our Members,

Once again it has been an honor to serve as President of the San Onofre Surfing Club this past year. 2015 has been a quite a year. 70-degree water temperatures into November and plenty of surf for all of us to enjoy.

I am pleased to report that our Club’s membership numbers have continued to increase. As I mentioned last year, having a strong membership base is crucially important to the Club’s ability to be an advocate for what is in the best interest of this beach that we all cherish.

Thank you to all that participated in our club events in 2015. For those that were not able to do so, keep an eye out for our 2016 event announcements and participate if possible. These events are exclusively for you, our members. I’d like to extend a huge “thank you” to our board of directors and all that volunteer to help make these events a success year after year.
We do face some challenges…

The current park lease is up for renewal on August 30th, 2021. There is no clarity at this point in time as to what will happen with the access to the beach and who oversees the facilities. The club is very focused on the historic significance of San Onofre both to the sport of surfing and those that appreciate the ocean and nature.

Additionally, we continue to closely monitor the erosion of the beach and the road. This has progressed significantly over the last year. With the high probability of a forthcoming El Nino weather pattern, there is reason for concern. We expect at the very least to have additional beach maintenance expenditures and are working hard to maintain our good relationship with the State Parks folks to assure we keep our beach in the condition we all desire. During periods of bad weather, the State Parks may temporarily restrict access until the conditions dry out a bit and/or erosion issues are inspected for safety concerns. While this may be an inconvenience, the Club appreciates your cooperation and understanding. Ultimately the weather and erosion is up to Mother Nature but we will do whatever we can to preserve the beach and it’s historical features.

In conclusion, I would like to humbly ask that all of you renew your club memberships right away. Upon joining, you will receive a link to allow you to vote for the 2016 Board of Directors. We encourage you to vote… all ballots must be completed by February 15th, 2016.

Lastly, if you hang out with others down at Sano that aren’t members, encourage them to join. With some of the challenges I outlined above, we will need to have a strong membership to be effective in our efforts to preserve and protect the San Onofre experience.

Respectfully,
Brian Ephraim

Just an FYI, the club doesn't care what you ride when it comes to getting membership, and $20 is pretty inexpensive to put another name in the ledger when it comes to the number of "members the club represents" when it's talking with the State folks wrt the beach, and the public's access to it.

There's strength in numbers, so if you we in SoCal really want to attempt to do something about it.....just saying.

Let it go. You had a good session, and ultimately the only damage was to your ego. It could have been a lot worse.

You can't go through life fighting every battle that is offered you. Sometimes it takes more courage to walk away than to engage. But is this really worth spending more of your time on? If you now feel too intimidated to paddle out without imagining that the authorities are watching, then maybe. But otherwise, maybe just put it down to another of life's less edifying experiences. It is easy to give in to anger and hurt, but rarely does following the course of action that those emotions prompt lead to an improvement in your life situation.
Wise, and excellent advice A10.  Nuff said.

Since everything is relative, it would be useful to know what your "factor" is.
I know it doesn't account for "area on water" but it would help identify the "edge" of where "doable" becomes "struggle" for most people.

Factor is:
board liters divided by your total weight in kg (you + board + paddle )

Me (225 lbs & board is 130 liters)
102 kg + 9 kg = 111 kg
130/111 = 1.17 is my "factor"

If we know where most people begin to struggle, then we can get an idea where to set our own goal.
I think this might be an interesting topic to start another thread with, but in the meantime.....

Me: 198 lbs  -  Board + paddle: 17 lbs  - Total: 215 lbs or 98 kg.
Board: 109 ltrs.
109/98 = 1.11 is my "factor"

Note:  That is my "comfortable factor", one that is doable on most days shy of whitecaps.  I have had some real fun on boards with an almost 1  "factor" (1.02), but those were in pretty clean conditions, and took a lot of focus, and paddle work to stay upright between sets.  IOWs, fun...but tiring.

My "shorter" board mentioned in my first post above (7'8"x30"), has a "factor" of 1.21, and is my goto "easy" board, especially when the whitecaps pop up.  I call it, "The Dance Floor", as there's so much more workable standing area, that gives me a lot of area to move my feet around without it getting to the point of tipping over....that it feels like I can "dance" around all over it without falling.  Not like some of my other boards that a foot moved a couple inches one way or the other upsets the apple cart.

Outside, when I went from 8'5"x29" to 7'8"x30", I found that the shorter board was actually much more stable, as it was to not wider midship, but also wider in the nose and tail, with much less rocker, actually given me more surface area on the water when standing then the 9" longer, and 1" narrower board did.

Now as you've noted, this much more surface area did account for much more drag, and thus slower paddling, so I found that I had to completely rework when and where I attempted to take off or start me paddle for a wave.

Since I basically get only one or two paddle strokes in once the wave is on me, and before it simply just moves on by....I find myself setting up way late in the wave, and then just dropping in at the very last second.  There really is no paddling for an "outsidewave", as it's just an exercise in futility, because after paddle stroke 3 or 4, and I'm already standing one the backside of the wave.

I even at times just take off in the forming whitewater, as these little short/wide boards are usually pretty quick/fast, and timing a single stroke, then sitting back, turning the board hard in the direction you're headed,  and letting the board work to get out in front is usually quite successful....and the feeling of this rapid acceleration is quite something.

So you might try slowly paddling in the somewhat parallel angle to the oncoming wave, and as it's getting on you, begin turning the board away from it, and then time your first strong paddle stroke to dig forward, just as you feel the wave begin to lift you to push you into the wave, and immediately start your drop.

I've found it's a completely different technique than I use with my longer (less yawing) boards, but one with a little practice, you should adapt to pretty quickly, and probably enjoy that shorter board more than anything else you have in your quiver.

Best of luck, have fun....and patience,
Sano

Holy cow, that is amazing!!!!

Look how they had to figure out just where the balance point needed to be...but if that board gives way, someone's going to look like this :o as the umbrella pole checks him for polyps.  ;) ;D

A more recent Gorilla Glue anecdote to reinforce what PonoBilll said:

After a surfer snapped the front 2' off a prone 9' longboard soft top at our charity surf contest this weekend in Manhattan Beach, the board was put into the trash pile.  The nose was just barely hanging on by the fiberglass membrane on the bottom; the foam was totally severed.  So I rescued it from the trash and put it in my car, figuring I could play mad scientist on this no cost test subject.

At home I Gorilla Glued the nose back on.  Was amazed at how solid it felt after the initial glue up.  In the process I discovered that this board was actually a hard board encased in foam, unlike a Wavestorm which is soft all the way through.  So I stripped off the whole outer layer of foam and added two narrow layers of six oz glass over the snapped area.  Then decided to take it for destructive testing before investing more time.

I threw a 2+1 setup in the boxes and successfully surfed the board yesterday at Doheny.  Rides nice!  And free, except for the cost of a little Gorilla Glue, fiberglass and time.

Will post some pictures.....

Would I use Gorilla Glue Glue again on a SUP handle reinstallation?  Absolutely.  It foams and fills gaps nicely, easy to shave off the extra foam with an oscillating multi tool, no danger of melting the EPS, and has a rock solid hold.  Maybe it weighs a little more, but in small quantities I won't ever be a good enough surfer to notice it.  The positives, particularly eliminating the risk of melting EPS, in my view far outweigh the one negative.
Dang, I just might of found me a new board repair guy.  "Bro discount"....right?  ;) :D

Have had some really fun sessions there....and the nice thing, it usually breaks all over, is not all that crowded (compared to SanO, and/or Boneyards for instance) so you don't have to paddle in, and amongst the surfers to find a great left or right.

Whew! - pretty wave! ..never been on one like it.  ..bet that orange LB'er felt cheated.

Yeah, I think he, and a couple others did on that one.  I always have in the back of my head, "Just because I can, doesn't mean I always have to, or should".....just saying.

I agree, and see what you mean by your term "shadowing", but it's not what happened here.

That day, Saturday, it was a pretty stiff sideshore current and there were a number of people, including me, all paddling along sideshore to get back and hold position so as not to drift sideshore down current.  I was in a group of about 6 people all paddling fairly close to each other, nobody paddling out to catch a wave, but sideshore against the current.  This girl, who was closest to me, just suddenly made a hard left and paddled inches across my nose.  The way she did it was almost like someone driving a car in a movie trying to run someone else off the road.
Fair enough, and thanks for the clarification.  That makes a lot more sense as to why folks were running into each other even when just paddling for waves....folks were taking when/where they/she shouldn't have been.

So I agree with stoney, "In that case I wouldn't worry about it....." because from the sounds of it, her move was about as out of the blue, and unexpected as could be, and probably just unavoidable given that explanation of the situation.  And since no one (or no board) was worse for the wear, then it's, "no harm, no foul".  :)
