Classifieds / Foil SUP with helmet and vest. - $300 (San Clemente)
« on: January 12, 2019, 02:50:14 PM »
Not my equipment, but very familiar with it, and can vouch that it's "in like new condition", and an incredible price for someone wanting to try foiling for the first time on a budget, or upgrading their current board with an already "flight tested" one.

Dan

I've flown this board a couple times, and can say that it's stable, paddles well, and flies nicely. Just thought I'd post it so someone here has a chance to jump on it if they've been looking before someone else jumps on it....$300!!! :o 8)

Foil SUP / Foiling with Zane
« on: October 08, 2018, 04:40:57 PM »
Had the opportunity to foil, meet up, and talk with Zane, and he's added to my list of "The Good Guys of the Sport". So down to earth, friendly, easy going, and full of stoke. Oh, and he foils pretty good as well.

I'm sure others must have seen it before, but it was a first for me, and hadn't read about it here so here goes....

Several of us are standing outside just waiting for the next set, and here comes Zane pumping his 6'9" HN at warp speed, and since he had nothing to connect to outside of us....he somehow throws the thing up into the air, and does a complete 360o, lands the board, and then turns to paddle towards us to chat. :o Wow!!

Eventually I think his go-go energy got the best of him, and seeing a little bump forming on the outside he decides it's time to foil. Now I guess it would have been too pedestrian to just paddle out towards it like the rest of us mortals, so he starts digging with his paddle as he begins pumping his board (that's a good 6" to a foot underwater btw), and after maybe a dozen paddle strokes, and pumps...he's up on the foil, and pumping out to the incoming swell, hops on it, and carves it up like he's on a short SUP board, I think forgetting that he had a foil screwed into the bottom of it.

I had to sit down and take a rest just watching him.  ;) ;D  We shared a wave a little later on, and it was a blast following him, and having the best seat in the house to watch him do his thing.  8)

SUP General / Another SoCal Shark Attack - 9/29/18
« on: September 29, 2018, 06:48:03 PM »
From NBC News:
Quote
Boy, 13, attacked by shark off Southern California coast.
The boy "sustained traumatic injuries to the upper torso area" in the attack off an Encinitas beach.

The boy, who was not identified, "sustained traumatic injuries to the upper torso area” in the 6:55 a.m. incident near Beacon's Beach, said Encinitas Lifeguard Capt. Larry Giles. A spokesman for Rady Children's Hospital said he was in critical condition and would undergo surgery Saturday afternoon.

After the attack, the boy was brought back to the beach by three good Samaritans on a kayak. About 30 people had been in the water diving for lobsters on the first day of the season, Giles and a witness said.

Lifeguards on scene provided life support before the boy was taken to a trauma center, Giles said. The boy was conscious when he was saved by bystanders and when he was transported by helicopter, he said.

"There was about 30 people in the water, and then we heard this kid scream—and I thought he just, you know, maybe his first bug [lobster], got like a big one and so I was happy for him,” Chad Hammel, one of the kayakers who helped rescue the boy, said.

"And then I kind of heard that 'I got bit,'" Hammel said. "There was a seal swimming around us, and so I kind of put two and two together. When I started paddling towards him and there was a big old, you know, wake of blood behind him."

Once on the kayak, Hammel said the boy’s “entire back was open.” The boy said the shark attacked him from the clavicle and on his back, and the shark's teeth cut part of his cheek.

One of the three men was swimming with his fins and Hammel paddled towards shore, but “the shark followed," Hammel said.

"He wasn't really chasing, but he was kind of waiting to see what was going to happen," he said. It was the boy’s first time out for lobster, Hammel said.

Bystanders said the shark was around 11 feet long, Giles said. The boy was in about 9 feet of water 150 to 200 yards from the beach. One of his parents was on the beach at the time.

"We are concerned about obviously public safety. The beaches are going to be closed down right now," Giles said. "We are asking people not to go into the water."

Bystanders reported there was a seal in the area at the time of the attack, Giles said. Seals are prey for some types of sharks, including great whites. Hammel said "it looked like a white." Officials were working with a marine scientist to determine the type of shark involved.

The boy’s family is requesting privacy but said they appreciate the support they have received, Dr. Tim Fairbanks, division chief of pediatric surgery and trauma surgery at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego, said in a statement on their behalf.

"The family is completely focused on their child at this time," Fairbanks said.

He added that the boy was free diving for lobsters when he was attacked.

The waters by beaches were closed from La Costa Avenue around South Ponto Beach south to Swami’s Beach and would remain closed for 48 hours to see if there was any more shark activity in the area, Giles said.

"At this time since the incident, we have not seen any shark activity at all," he said.

A surfing competition down the beach was canceled Saturday, and a sheriff's helicopter was being flown to observe any signs of sharks, among other measures. If there is no more activity spotted, the beach closures could end at 7 a.m. Monday, Giles said.

The attack shocked some people familiar with the waters off Beacon’s Beach. Mike McInnis, who lives nearby, learned to surf there when he was 6 years old.

"I just couldn’t believe it was happening, in my surf break," McInnis said. "I surf here almost every day."

There were a series of possible shark sightings reported off the coast of Oceanside, a city north of Encinitas, in late June, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Downwind and Racing / PPG Women's vs Men's Board Sizes
« on: September 14, 2018, 10:19:51 AM »
Just out of curiosity I went looking at the PPG website, and when I got to the pricing/registration page, noticed that all of the women's races have a board limit of 12'6" while them men's were "14' & Under"...which I thought was quite interesting given the recent thread here wrt the "WSL announces equal pay for women", and the following discussion about "equality" in the competition venues.

Seems to me that the PPG is (intentionally or not) stating that women can't handle or compete on the larger boards which I think is a big mistake for more than one reason.

So any idea on why they wouldn't just use the same "14' & Under" stipulation, and let the competitors choose which length board they're comfortable on, and feel would give them the best chance against the competition?

Foil SUP / Trying to Make Something Outta Nuttin'
« on: August 22, 2018, 06:30:38 PM »
Yesterday we had just a little weak 1-2' swell, but still ended up to be pretty fun with the foils....

Also, just an FYI if you're filming with a drone. At the 13 second mark when "angledfoil" Ron stand ups and paddles after having ducked...he did that because the drone pilot was flying backward filming, and had no visual on him, and had Ron not seen it coming at him, and ducked under it...he would have rotor blades in the noggin that I'm sure we can all imagine how ugly that might have ended up.  :o :-\

Just be careful out there...

SUP General / Another One Bites The Dust
« on: June 20, 2018, 09:14:43 AM »
While one of the original "pop-out" dealers to show up in our area, they did eventually come around to at least shaping their own boards, and not just buying containers of someone else's copied design...and also offering them in custom shapes, and/or glassed locally by one of the best glassers in the area if you wanted to pay a little more for that. But that seems to be coming to an end, as it appears that Riviera SUPs are indeed closing their doors as has been the rumor on the beach for about a year now.

Going to their website you can find some pretty incredible deals on whatever they have left in stock wrt boards, and some accessories...but most all of their stuff is "Sold Out" now, and it doesn't look like they have any intention of replenishing their supply.

Looks like they're still offering/accepting some "custom" orders, but that's about it in the way of board choices go with the exception of the couple leftover race boards, and one small surf (83 liter) SUP model.

Rivi boards were all over the place just a year or so ago (locally anyway), and were often the "higher end beginner" boards we saw out there, so it's quite an interesting statement on the state of affairs in the SUP industry with them appearing to be bowing out of the competition (both literally, and figuratively), and that's a shame...the Rambos are a good family, and did quite a bit in introducing the sport to quite a few people around here. Sorry to see them go, although Brandon can be seen out on a foil nowadays, so who knows what the future holds for them...Riviera Foils?  ;) :)

Classifieds / Thinning the Quiver
« on: June 19, 2018, 10:06:25 AM »
Time to let go of a couple of my performance SUPs that I'm not using having gone to foiling at the moment.

#1 - Chelu Performance 8'5"x29"x4-3/16" @ 108.9 liters, and 14.5 lbs (w/o fins). Surfs great, is easy to paddle, and quite stable for a board less than 110 liters. Board in is very good condition with just a couple minor dings repaired professionally, and almost unnoticeable unless pointed out. Although not shown in the pictures, it comes with either a quad set of fins or a thruster set up (your choice of one or the other). $600 obo.

#2 - Chelu All-Around 9'4"x29"x4-1/4" @ 125 liters, and 16.5 lbs (w/o fins). Another great surfing SUP, but also a harbor paddler, and just easy to use all around fun, do everything board. Also in very good shape with a couple dings professional repaired, and again hard to see unless you know where they are. Fins also included with board although not shown in the pics. $550 obo

Paddle demos can be arranged locally in San Clemente or Dana Point if desired to see if either or both are right for you before buying.

Click here for pictures...which I can't seem to get to load here for whatever reason(s). >:(

Gear Talk / Thoughts on a GoPro
« on: May 24, 2018, 10:25:57 AM »
So while walking through Costco the other day, an end display with the GoPro HERO5 bundle caught my attention, and was wondering if it's a worthwhile investment for the price ($250) or if it's already outdated with the other GoPro versions already out, and if the package includes all the stuff I'd need to get some of the cool water shots I'm seeing others post.

Thanks in advance for any technical, and practical assistance you can provide.

Classifieds / Chuck Glynn Foil Board - $950
« on: May 23, 2018, 01:30:37 PM »
Chuck Glynn Foil specific board - 7'3"x28"x4" ~105 liters, and weighing in at just a tad over 16 lbs, front foot strap included.

I'm 6'1" and 207 lbs., and it floats me fine, and is as stable as several of my other bigger boards (given it has the big ballast hanging beneath it the others don't).

http://oi63.tinypic.com/n5lp4o.jpg

http://oi67.tinypic.com/288aver.jpg
(sorry, don't know why I can't post images here :-[)

Very good condition all around, with only a couple really tiny paddle dings that were repaired, and the board is still its same original weight (ie. no water in it), and water tight.

Only selling because I want to go smaller, and need the funds for a new one....and really more so the garage space so the wife's not on my case again with, "Another board?" while rolling her eyes LOL!!.

In San Clemente (and San Onofre more times than not), but will to meet up elsewhere in SoOC for your convince...if you're a serious buyer, and not just kicking tires at the moment.  :D

NOTE: Foil in pictures NOT included.

Foil SUP / Really...Don't Use Naish "Thrust Surf" In the Surf?
« on: May 20, 2018, 12:41:29 PM »
Now I get the litigious state of affairs we're in nowadays with everything, and that no one is responsible for themselves or their actions any longer...but reading Naish's "Thrust Surf" foil page seems a little odd, ridiculous, counter-intuitive, and a strange way of marketing them...at least as I'm reading it.

So the "Thrust Surf" was....
Quote
Designed in collaboration with Kai Lenny, the Thrust Surf Hydrofoil develops lift at low speed, and launches with minimal effort. The combination of early take-off and excellent maneuverability makes it great for waveriding, cruising or racing. The extra long fuselage creates a large sweet spot and provides stability, while the downturned stabilizer (rear foil) makes waveriding and turning intuitive and easy. The small (55 cm) extruded alloy mast can be retrofitted to any style box system. Whether surfing or downwinding, the Thrust Surf Foil will keep you stoked session after session!

....however, they also want to make sure they let you know that....
Quote
WARNING: DO NOT USE THE THRUST HYDROFOIL IN THE SURF.  You will permanently damage your foil and can cause serious injury or death to yourself and others around you. Damage incurred as a result of abnormal use, or subjected to stress—including breaking waves—beyond the physical limits of the materials used in body or components is not covered under the warranty policy.
...you should not use the Naish "Thrust Surf" in the surf, even using the emphatic capitalization (yelling it) that is their doing, not mine to emphasize their point.  :o

Should be fun the next time I see Chuck out on his, that I'll have to remind him he's not supposed to be using it out in the surf with us according to his sponsor, and he's setting a bad example for anyone else thinking about taking one of them out there. LOL!  ;) ;D

EDIT: Btw, this is all kind of tongue in cheek, and nothing against Naish or their foils. Just thought the wording was kind of humorous when I read with it all things considered, and is one of the big reasons or uses folks are buying these foils for is all. =)

Foil SUP / Go Foil Bolts
« on: April 09, 2018, 06:50:24 PM »
FedEx is supposedly delivering my Iwa/M200 combo tomorrow sometime before 8pm. So in preparation of getting things mounted, I'm curious the size of the mounting bolts most are using. Several guys on the beach that I talked to, said that they tapped out whatever size the Tuttle holes are (can't find anything on their website) to a 1/4-20, and using 2-1/2" stainless bolts.

Reason I'm asking, is I'm just curious if everyone's tapping to the standard size, or if I can find the correct length metric to fit it if that's the case (guessing M6 x 65mm?). Because that sounds like I'll be needing to find a specialty fastener company if that's the case...or just tapping them out myself, and going with the 1/4-20 like the others.

Thanks in advance.

So who wins in this informal "competition"....

....and/or in general on what you see at your everyday lineup?

Foil SUP / The Rookie's Starting To Foil Journey (What not to do)
« on: March 29, 2018, 05:47:08 PM »
Welp, a couple months I talked myself into giving this foiling stuff a try, but went about it in all the wrong ways; or really just in one big wrong way...I tried to go the cheap route, "just in case a didn't like it" I tried to convince myself.

So I set out on craigslist to find my "affordable" foil package, and w/o going into all of the sorted details, ended up with a used just one time Slingshot Airstrike board, and a brand new, matching Hover Glide FSurf/SUP Foil Set sent from them...all for the price of a new GoFoil alone. I'm just going to say that was pretty much just a "pay me now, or pay me later" kind of thing, because I'm now on board, and foil number 3...let me explain.

I guess in their hurried effort to get into the rapidly expanding SUP foil market, Slingshot took their Hover Glide FWind1 foil, cut the mast down by 11", and called it their "Hover Glide FSurf/SUP Foil Set". Problem is, the H2 wing that I'm assuming is a good windsurfing foil because of the "lift" of the sail...wasn't nearly enough wing to lift the heavy Airstrike board (7'8"x31"x4.25" x 145 liters), and my 205 lb big body plus whatever my Quicksilver wetsuit weighs when wet.  :-[

Try as I might for as long as I liked...that board was not coming off the water for more than a brief moment when I basically just buried the tail, and pointed the nose to the sky. But as soon as it came off the water, and I then tried to level it off to fly it, back down to the water it went. For the next four or five sessions it was always the same thing...looking like trying to get a C-5 cargo plane off the runway with the wings of some fighter jet....lift a little, back down, lift a little, back down, rinse and repeat....just ain't gonna happen. Time to move on to try something else...

Luckily enough after a couple weeks on craigslist, I found someone smaller than myself who wanted it more than I did who bought it from me for basically what I paid for it (lost a little bit, but not enough to fret about it), so I was back on the hunt, but this time with a little more patience, a little better understanding of what it was that I needed, and a little bit bigger pocketbook.

Next up was a couple test flight attempts on a borrowed/loaned Takuma DBS board (7'8"x28.5x4.1875" x 115 liters) and their V100 foil. Quite a difference in lift from the foil, and I was actually able to get a little flight time with it. In fact, enough lift that for the first time I actually had to think about keeping the nose down a bit on takeoff, or it would want to take off, and fly before I was ready for it. First time that I'd have to say that it was even a bit unnerving to have the board lift, and not really having much control at all with it, or really even knowing where the heck I was going...pretty much just along for the ride the couple of times that I was able to get the board up, and off of the water. Fun, but a bit unstable, and I little frustrating/concerning that I dang nearly ran over poor old SlatchJim who was doing everything he could be get out of the way of the flying machete that was going left, right, back left, and basically whichever direction he tried to escape to....Sorry SJ!!  :-[   Then came today....

Got the opportunity to try a Chuck Glynn shaped board (7'4"x28"x4" x 105 liters...but relatively thick in the nose and tail so manageable), with an older version of the GoFoil Maliko, and all I can say is, "Wow!! What a difference".

Again had to work to keep the nose down on takeoff, but just a little release of pressure in the front foot, and up we came...and then a little pressure back into the front foot leveled things out, and down the line we went. Again, a little unnerving being able to stay aloft as long as I was, so I'm thinking that subconsciously I was putting more and more forefoot pressure in to eventually land harmlessly as things slowed down a bit with the wave. But definitely a whole new experience to feel some lift and stability in the foil, and now just have to start trusting it that it's going to continue to fly straight if I don't get too crazy in the back foot pressure, and just let it go stable and level.

Ended up buying the Chuck Glynn board, but now have to wait on the GoFoil Iwa/Kai set to come in that I have had on order for some time now, that's hopefully is sooner than later...seems no one has any in stock now.  Because now I have board but no foil....Aarrgghh!! :(

45
Used 7 times, with no dings or dents, and just a couple normal paddle taps on the rails. Foil comes with two masts, a 15" one for learning, and a standard 24" surf/SUP length. New matching rear foot locator kick pad recently installed not shown in pics.

Heck with it....pictures won't load....click here for craigslist ad if you'd like to see them.  ???

In SoCal - $1400 for everything.....$700 for just the foil....$800 for the board alone.
