Gear Talk / Re: Jimmy Lewis Super Frank?
« on: October 09, 2017, 04:26:18 PM »
Badger, I weigh 195lbs and have been riding the JL SuperFrank Lean 8'x30" all summer. It's been a great little board that works well in a variety of conditions and makes small waving riding a lot more fun. For it's size, it's stable and catches waves well, turns great and motors through flat sections. At my weight, I mainly use it in clean or smaller conditions. It was the board I reached for the most this summer. I had a blast riding it and got lots of compliments on my surfing. I'm rocking it with AU curved front fins combined with a small 3" trailer fin. This combo is working great on this board for me.
Coming down from a 9' board, I found the 8' board to be a lot more fore/aft pitch sensitive with foot placement. I found it so sensitive that I marked exactly where to stand while paddling. Once you get this dialed, all is good. On a wave it's stable and you can move all over it. I love the 8' but can't imagine what the 7'6" is like. Hope this helps.

Gear Talk / Re: New Board narrowed to Starboard Pro OR JL Super Tech
« on: September 06, 2017, 05:12:33 AM »
For the conditions you describe, it sounds like the larger JL SuperTech may be a better quiver addition for you.  I'm about 195.  I haven't ridden the size boards you're considering but I do have the 9'1" SuperTech that I ride in larger & rougher conditions.  The larger size is more comfortable and works great in rough conditions.  The SuperTech is a sweet, versatile shape that works well in a wide variety of conditions. I ride a smaller 8' board when the conditions are clean.

Gear Talk / Re: Sunova "The One" vs Supsports Hammer
« on: August 24, 2017, 05:06:38 AM »
It probably doesn't matter much because after you gain more surf time you will likely soon be moving on to smaller more performance boards. Knowing that, I would recommend the Sunova One to have a quiver board for later.  I've owned the Hammer and found I do not like wide tail boards.

Jimmy Lewis WorldWide 8'9" - Super fun board. Stable and easy to catch waves. It's shape and volume allow you to move around and ride from the front, turn from the middle or carve from the tail. What more could you want? The 8'9" is the sweet size in the WW line. Lightweight and durable JL construction. Includes fins, RS Pro rail saver tape, board leash and full deck pad. Retails for $1,700. new, will sell for $995. Located in Charleston, SC.

From JL's website:
"This high performance board is very accessible to any rider who wants to have maximum performance in the surf. Added width and volume makes this board very forgiving stability wise, without sacrificing performance aspects of the shape. The fast, flat bottom nose entry that feeds into the single concave creating lift and speed then flowing back into the double concave through the fin area which gives the board drive through turns makes this board highly responsive and maneuverable. The wider tail block gives the board added drive and thrust while the swallow tail keeps it responsive and allows for easier, tight turning. 5 fin box set up."

If you're going to install, this one is probably the best option:

The "Maui" rocker on the world wide made it less than ideal in east coast mushy conditions.

Hmm, interesting comment since the WW appears to be more of a fish shape. Not sure what size you were on but my 8'9" JL WW works great in east coast conditions.

Gear Talk / Re: Suggestion for Sunova, get rid of the LIFTSUP handle.
« on: October 22, 2016, 06:26:09 PM »
Handle type and balance point are SO important to the enjoyment of this sport. The wrong handle or balance point can make things miserable. After owning many boards, I found the Blue Planet and Jimmy Lewis ledge handles to be the best. I ride JL boards, due to the superior shapes, construction & handle. I'm interested in Sunova boards but have held off due to the Lifttsup handle. Hope they do change to a Blue Planet or deep JL type ledge handle.

Getting hit in SC right now :-\. Hermine's got some punch. Watching the rain come down in sideways sheets. Winds are strong and the ocean is big and angry. Stay safe!
