One other data point, Mel IS awesome, but she is a tiny little thing and the guy who sold me the Style did me right!

I will throw in my 2 cents.

I own both the new deal and Style, I am 220 lb and have the slightly smaller versions of each. The new deal is fast, but fairly tippy, not a step-down or one board from my experience.  My go-to longboard is my Style (10' x 131 L). I love it! I just got back a month of surfing in Baja and only brought 2 boards, the Style was one of them. That said I'm not sure if I would recommend it for you either. It is made to stick to the water for nose walking which it does, but that also makes it a slowish paddler. If you are willing to put in the time it is a great board. Those are my 2 longboards so not comfortable recommending another.

I have the Surge paddle a surf specific model. been using it as my main paddle for 1 year. Regular/medium SDS (not skinny) diameter. It is by far the most awesome surf paddle I have owned. In fact, I just got another one that is 2" longer for SUP foil. Great for bracing and paddling into waves as well sticking in for a pivot turn. the blade is buoyant, so not only super light it has a return feel during the sweep. I ride fairly small boards for my size most of the time. I have never raced or paddled for distance so I can not comment on that.

I bought a full kit from Live2Kite. For me as a beginner, it was recommended I get the Aluminum $100 mast as opposed to the $800 carbon. He said in order to get the stiffness the carbon mast would only be 15% lighter and I would never be able to tell the difference for a while. I also got the Axis 7'6" Carbon board. I have not had much time on it and am now injured and out for the next month or two so no report.

Thanks for all the detail, I think, still digesting it all. I wanted to mention that I have bought way too many fins and finally found that the Collin McPhillips are the best for me. I have them on both of my performance boards.

Solid advice, thanks, I am always looking for ways to prevent this from happening again. Thanks for the tip to share picts with Doc since I see him next week.

I am still alternating between anger and depression.............acceptance soon.

Hey Tube thanks for sharing your experience, I am definite the guy who would comeback too soon, I will be careful. 8 weeks, ouch, I have 7 more. I have an MRI and appt with Ortho next week.

Bean, thanks for the comforting article, NOT 😳  I will for sure ask the doc about that. Since I can put weight on it I assume there is no break.

SUP General / Major hamstring Pull, I hate This!

I had a few small strains in my hamstrings when I first started SUSing. I now regularly stretch and use a roller on my gluts and stretch before going out on the water. Due to family, holidays and cold, I did not do any stretching and rushed out for a sunset sesh. 2nd wave loud pop! I had to crawl to shore and could not put any weight on it only crutches.

Kept it up and iced for 2 days. Now I can put pressure on my leg and limp around. It is super black and blue. I read that if it is torn it can take months to heal...........so bummed.

Does anyone have experience with this type of injury? Will it ever fully heal? To add insult to injury (literally) my new Sunova Style arrives today.

Great vid Creek! I would emphasize sitting way inside for late take-off and you can paddle out quick if you see a bigger set coming in.

I am 6'1" 215 lb and have 2 mainboards, the B-line, and the Phantom (see dims below). The B-line is super fast, I and my SUS buddy took this head to head switching on the water multiple sessions and it really blows away traditional surf shapes for speed. It stable and tons of glide, can get into small waves and the carbon construction is bombproof. The Phantom surfs amazing top to bottom. Its traditional surf shape and narrower shape allows tight flowy turns. I always grad this board when it steep and waist high and above. My experience is that I can balance on smaller/narrower boards when it is fairly smooth, but on BIG days there is so much water moving it is not a great option for me. I can balance the Phantom in all conditions and catch tons of waves. It took me a few sessions to find the magic spot for my back foot.......

I just moved here to Santa Cruz from San Francisco. I got tired of driving here all the time. ;D

PM me if you are coming from out of town and I will be happy to show you a SUP friendly spot that can be super fun even when big.

I too am riding shorter boards, but I just moved to the beach and am looking for a great longboard. sometimes I just want to be able to stand with no effort and ride smaller waves as well as learn to walk up.

I am 6'1" 210lb, live in Santa Cruz CA. I am looking at the style. There are 2 10' boards and am leaning toward the XL version. Anybody with experience on these?
