Gear Talk / Ear plugs
« on: September 12, 2017, 12:53:05 PM »
I am pretty minimal, no hat, shades or plugs, but took a couple spanks to the ear, heard a few horror stories and am worried about drum rupture mostly. Looking for suggestions. I do like to hear as much as possible. High end is cool.

Gear Talk / 2017 starboard pro xl to pro not XL
« on: June 19, 2017, 10:14:06 AM »
i got a Carbon Starboard pro XL in February and have out grown it, the 139L is a bit much for me. part of this is due to the fact that i went from 215 lb to 195 lbs, but my balancing have also improved greatly. the 9.0 pro at 128 L would be better for me. any other suggestions to replace my big board?

the pro is an awesome board, catches anything, butters through waves and rides top to bottom fast, i am a starboard fan, but open to other ideas.

i prefer a trade, but could sell.

Technique / Real World- High Performance/Low Volume SUS Strategies
« on: June 09, 2017, 01:05:20 PM »
My buddy tried to make me admit i have a board problem, based on the rate i have been buying smaller and smaller boards. in fact most of my buds are telling me i am wasting time and money, but this has not slowed me down.

i tell him i am in full-on go for it mode! this is my season to push my limits.

i am just now getting pretty comfy on the starboard pro 8.5 x 29 112L, next week i am getting Infinity RNB 7'11" x 28" 98L. i realize this is a huge leap and am more than willing to put in the time and effort i.e. plop, plop, fizz, fizz.

i am looking for hints and help from those who have gone before me on a board that is beginning to approach the 1:1 volume:mass.

paddling out: looking at the pros, they do a lot of paddling out prone, foot position when standing?
between sets: i am thinking i may be able to stand if i keep moving, foot position, but fully prepared to sit between sets
taking off : foot position, assuming later take-offs, weight forward/back. a bit concerned with tangling up with proners if i am in the line-up

i am prepared for this to be an end-of-season, when i am in good shape during glassy days.

any hints/discussion appreciated, thanks

on my quest to challenge my self since i am beginning  to get comfortable on the 8'5" x 29" 112L Starboard Pro (i am 6'2" 195lbs) i have been looking around and the Infinity B-Line looks like a wicked sweet board. talking to the shop they felt that the 8'2" x 29" 101L would be a great board for me. he said that the width was more important than the volume and that they do not have any for demo.

haven't been able to find anything on the inter-webs from anyone who has actually ridden the B-Line or even found a review, let alone talk about the stability of this design, durability, resale, etc.

this is a production board, carbon build, but was told that they could build a custom one for me out of glass and add some carbon to the rails.

Zoners, please help out with some juicy info and opinions!

thanks!

Gear Talk / new fin fun on wave, but...........
« on: May 11, 2017, 08:16:49 PM »
new fin set are fun on the wave, but not so fun to turn or pivot turn when trying to catch a wave. anyone try the FCS II MB PG Split Keel Quad Surfboard Fins?

this is my first tru at a quad and noticeably harder to turn while paddling.

this is for my starboard 9.0 pro. is this just how quad paddle and i need to get used to it?

Gear Talk / Starboard Pro for heavy hitters
« on: April 23, 2017, 10:01:34 AM »
Zoners -

I have become a SUP believer. I am 6'2" and 205lbs.

I have the Starboard 9' XL pro (139L), it took about 3 weeks to get it wired and I love it, even in small waves. Looking at having a quiver the next step would be the 8'5" Pro (112L).

Would like to hear any expierince with going this small. Is this a reasoanable step down or will it just be collecting dust?

Gear Talk / Going Thin....the board not me
« on: March 04, 2017, 12:31:53 AM »
i have been surfing a jimmy lewis stun 9'7" 31" wide 137 liters (215lbs), been talking with a few friends who have been encouraging me to go to 29" wide.

seems to be some discussion that a narrower board will go rail to rail much better and that 29" or lower is the way to go. i am considering the starboard 9" x 29" wide 139 liters.

any thoughts on going narrow, as opposed to going shorter or down in volume?

Gear Talk / Surf SUP for 210lb - short is better?
« on: June 16, 2016, 12:16:26 PM »
i am 6'2" 210 lb and rethinking the whole......going shorter, riding the smallest board i can balance on.......is the best board for surf sup. the lower glide seems to affect wave count and when i see good guys on bigger waves they are using longer boards. thinking that quicker paddle to line-up and catching waves earlier will increase wave count and progress faster. thoughts?
