I was talking to my PT guy about surfing (he is a mostly a windsurfer) and he thought it was the worst year ever.  And his friends agreed with him as they were relived previous years surf conditions via videos they had made of each other, as there was no surf that day.

For my part I'd say it was pretty sucky overall. Seemed the wind was howling on days with marginal surf height which killed the take off where you need every bit of speed to catch a mushy shoulder.  But I also was not able to surf as many days either.  But I still checked the surf on cam or in person most days and my overall impresssion was, I did not miss much this year.

All good to hear

No using pain killers longer then necessary is very important.  I used for a week and put them away after that.

My doc, who is kinda the hip guy in SC, has kept me on a 50% weight bearing regime for a month and then a cane for weeks afterwards.  But his program has a high success rate (he is not selective on who he works on either so his rate I think is real) so I'm probably going to stick with it even though it might take longer to get on the board again.

What I did learn here is do the PT. I've been pretty consistent on that front but now I have increase my workout session by 2x.  Once that is  a bit easier I'll double up the reps as well.

I wish i had not put off my surgery for as long as I did.  As you get older it takes longer to heal so total time out of water is greater since you probably have more days where you cannot surf because of the hip.

Man it sucks to be out of the water.  After I saw this https://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,32441.msg377981.html#msg377981  I just want to jump on my foil board so bad.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Hip replacement and SUS
« on: May 10, 2018, 04:22:25 PM »
So a few weeks ago I had a hip totally replaced.  The pain had finally reached a level that was unacceptable when present, and times when it was present were occurring more often and from activities that previously did not aggravate my hip.  I'm just now getting scheduled for outpatient PT so I'm not well versed in how long it will take to get on a board again.

For hip surgery how long before you could do SUS again?  Any hacks you employed to help or move the process forward?

Thanks,

Foil SUP / Re: Foil board on the roof rack at 65mph Results?
« on: May 10, 2018, 11:47:51 AM »
I have found that at 80mph air molecules, pollen, rain drops and other airborne obstacles are inconsequential.

I think a branch at moderate speed would do that to a foil.  I ran into my garage with a bike on the cars roofs rack and only the car and garage were damaged.

Foil SUP / Foils and Kelp in Northern CA

Where are people foiling in Santa Cruz area to avoid the kelp?  I assume it has to be an area with a sandy bottom like Manresea or Cowells.  Any other areas?

I've tried Pleasure Point and Steamers at higher tides as well as Its and Davenport.  Varying amounts of kelp or kelp debris in all which means often I have kelp on the foil.

Thanks

Foil SUP / Re: foil boards vs regular sup with a foil

By instability what I mean is I'm unstable before the foil lifts from trying to catch the wave.  Foil sup boards they look like they would be able to glide to lift speed on not so steep wave whereas a smaller surf sup requires some hard and fast paddling to get to speed to catch the wave or generate enough speed to cause the foil to lift.  I'm riding a GoFoil 200 and weigh 225 wet.

Foil SUP / foil boards vs regular sup with a foil
« on: April 16, 2018, 11:59:16 AM »
So while learning to foil on a 7'10 surf sup I have notice that I need almost glassy conditions to get enough forward momentum take off and then successfully get positioned.  Otherwise the wave passes me by or I'm in the wrong place (because of the instability induced by trying to get into the wave) after the foil lifts which is always leads to a crash

Are sup boards made just for foiling substantially more stable and glide better then the average surf sup?   I'm only on session 3 so I know it may be too early to expect much.

Thanks

For those that cannot wait for delivery check if your local Home Depot has them in stock, not all do.  I picked up 6x1x100 stainless which is the length I needed for my board

SUP General / Re: Leashes.

Well I don't need a further reduction in my mental performance so maybe I need to revisit my leash choice.  But first I'll see if I can create a fallback so it is restrained when the swivel fails.  I never really thought of the stored energy in the leash as anything more then my board butler.

This could be a great murder weapon for a crime drama that films at the beach.  Hawaii Five O?

I have always used coiled leashes with SUP.  I like my board heading back to me after a crash so I have a better chance of escaping a pounding. When I used a regular leash it seemed to take forever to recover the board.  The down side is when in kelp things can get tangled up pretty good.

Also check out  101 Sports in San Rafel in CA.  They have GoFoils and some foil boards.  When I was there they only had single foils, no sets though.

I think they used 20 yo as the model.  I wear an XL but their XL was like a Large.  I tried on some shirts they had and notice the XL's were snug on me.  The XXL fits perfect and once I have pulled it on I don't notice it though what I did notice is that I my chest gets colder now. Not sure why that is.
