Foil SUP / How to transport foil board on bike rack
« on: December 05, 2017, 05:25:29 PM »
I copied Beasho's bike rack  that he posted a few years ago and have been using it since then (love that thing).  However, I'm not sure how things are going to work now that I'm switching to foiling.

Has anyone seen a bike rack design that allows board+foil transport?  My foil board will be 8'+

Thanks

Foil SUP / Kelp,paddle length, retrofiting a 7'10x32 with a foil
« on: March 31, 2017, 07:24:21 AM »
So I have decided to take the plunge get a foil so I can surf in new and empty places.

1. Is running into kelp likely to result in body contact with the foil if you are pitched forward off the board?

2. Is there any way to determine the length for a new paddle.  All my paddles have been cut pretty short for SUS so when I'm up on the foil I don't think they be long enough to reach the water on turn

3.  I looked at the GoFoil instructions for installing a Tuttle box and it seems like an decent ding fix guy can install it.  My question is does adding the new box change the surfing characteristic of a board when I want to use it without the foil?

4. Is it better to retrofit a 7'10x32 sup or buy a foil board like the Starboard Widepoint  or F-one Magic?

Travel, Trips, Destinations / SUP rental in Bocas del Toro
« on: December 06, 2016, 05:51:18 PM »
Heading down there next week but cannot find a smaller sup to rent.  All I can find are monster boards that are not suitable for surfing.  The airlines that fly into Bocas will not allow anything longer then 7 ft on the planes and mine is 7'10"

Anyone have a SUP hookup in Bocas del Toro, Panama?

Looking to try out the Shroom before buying a 8’3  or 8’7.  Anyone in town got time to let me hop on their board to see works for me?

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Looking for warm water SUP camps/tours
« on: October 21, 2016, 09:28:45 AM »
I'm looking for SUP camps/tour in Mexico or other warm water destinations.  Done proner tours where the surfers were all like 20ish so not much in common.

Ideas or suggestions welcome.

Classifieds / Sunova Speeed 8'10 $1100. In Santa Cruz.
« on: July 11, 2016, 08:00:49 PM »
Production 8'10.  Has Rail Saver Pro and tail handle added.  Ridden about 30 times.  I lack the balance skills to remain upright so I was not catching enough waves.   Which is the whole point of surfing so time to jettison it from the quiver.  Ping me if you are interested

I wandered over to Privates on Sunday to check out the surf and was talking about getting my pass for the next year.  Someone pointed out that the CCC is going to fine Opal Cliffs 11500 a day for everyday they restrict access.  Hmm maybe I should hold onto my 100 for now.

I like it as it is. There is someone watching your stuff, the place is clean and tidy and it never seems too crowded.

However, as a member of the great unwashed I'd also like to not pay 100 a year for a card to open the gate.  Though as a never to be member of the 1% I signed the petition to keep the masses from the break.

Anyone have a link to the details of what the CCC wants and what how has Opal Cliffs organization responded?

Gear Talk / What board is closest to Starboard 8'10 wide point
« on: January 30, 2016, 06:28:01 PM »
I rented a 8'10 Wide Point yesterday and went to Indicators and today Privates.  What a stable board and fun to ride.  And I have to say it was nice to not have to work so hard to stay upright like I do on my 8'10 Speeed or my 7'10 Wardog.  It was so nice that I want to get the carbon version but $3300 (with tax) is just too dam much.

So what I'm looking for is a equally lightweight board (18lbs) that duplicates or improves on the the 8'10 Wide Point's surf and stability characteristics.  I want to stay at 8'10 rather then getting a longer board to get stability

Is there any such thing out there?

Thanks,

Technique / Stop looking at your feet
« on: December 27, 2015, 07:30:12 PM »
I proner told me this the other day after 4 attempts to stand up in choppy conditions.  Next time I looked at the horizon as I popped up.  It was like magic.  BAM! Up and stable.  Then when I started looking at the horizon when paddling I also noticed more stability doing that as well.

Amazing what a difference a little change make.

Gear Talk / Good PDF/water wings for the impact zone
« on: December 04, 2015, 12:42:35 PM »
I'm going inside more and with that if I fall I'm generally getting pounded by breaking waves.  There surfers on every following wave so it is difficult to get to the outside again without getting in someone way.  I just hang out and wait for the set to end

I have a rubber handle at the back of the board but sometimes I'm near the peak (the white water side of the peak) and get picked up with the board pointing skyward and into the whiteness I go with the board beating me up along the way.  I'd like to avoid that experience if possible.  So I'm looking for something that will keep me above the water in the impact zone and not have to spend as much time underwater when I'm unable to use my board as a flotation device.

Anyone have a solution they use to stay afloat in the whitewater?

Travel, Trips, Destinations / SUS at Gigante Bay, Nicaragua
« on: November 13, 2015, 08:56:31 AM »
Went to the Giants Foot Surf camp.  It is located in a little fishing village called Gigante which is about 2 hours from Managua.  Paid 1500 for a single room though it is all inclusive.  Pick up and return from airport, 3 boat rides a day, 4 meals a day and surf guides.  Accommodations have AC though they are pretty sparse.  It was right on the beach so I could grab my board and go practice tail turns whenever I wanted to.  It's amazing how energized you are in warm water.  Everyone at the camp was in the 20s-early 30s and I'm 50ish.  There are lots of other nice places to stay on the coast though many were not on the beach so you would have to drive to get on the boat.  Very little travel to breaks was done by car since it too 4-5 time as long to get to the break.

Fast beach breaks and much bigger reef breaks.  Boat takes you everywhere you want to go.  Colorados and Pango Drop are just across the Gigiante bay which is a 10 minute boat ride.  Most breaks had no more then 20 people and often 5-10  people.   Also, went to Playgrounds up north.  Again if you get caught inside you are going to take a pounding since often a big set will start breaking further out.  Rides are not very long.  I saw shortboarders getting 4-6 turns on the reef breaks.  On the beach breaks often they would popup and then have to bail.  Took real effort to get a couple of turns or go down the line for any distance.   I never surfed at Colorados so I have no idea how long the rides are though one guy got barreled and as a long time surfer he though Colorados was a very technical break

It is not really SUS friendly since there are no escape routes like I'm use to in Santa Cruz.  Everyone there rides shortboards except a few old timers at Colorados.  In fact, I never saw another SUP/SUS there.

Great beaches, lovely water and excellent food.  The only reason to go to Gigante is to surf.  There are no touristy things to do in town or nearby.  As much as I liked it I cannot recommend it for SUS unless you have a high skill level.  Also you will need to pull yourself up on the boat.  They do not have a working ladder.  I eventually was able to slither over the transom.

SUP General / Resell value of SUP
« on: September 10, 2015, 03:15:00 PM »
I have sold 2 sups boards, a Naish Mana 10x32 and a L41 S3  8'8" x32.  When I sold the Naish I got 50% of the purchase price and when I sold the L41 I only got about 1/3 of the purchase price.  When I sold my longboards I was able to get 60 to 85 percent of the purchase price.  Granted the rails on the LB were not beat like on the SUP but deck and bottom were perfect.

Do you think it is all supply and demand?  Or is it changes in perception of what makes a good SUP today versus what was a good SUP 2 years ago?

Thanks
