Great moves on the waves.  I learned something from watching the paddle placement on the cutbacks.

Those boards don't look that short to be slashing around so well.  What size were they?

Anybody surfed Zero's recently?  Just south of Leo Carillo?  I remember that was really localized back in the day.

Nice pics!  Yes, very good the last two days.  My only regret is not being able to get in the water yesterday.  This morning was great and I plan to do a dawn patrol tomorrow before work.

I'm good with either and both.
+2, how about Friday the 27th or Saturday the 28th?
I can't make Friday.  How about Saturday the 28th?

JimK, how long are you going to be in the area?  I'll be out of town until the 26th, but if your still around after that, we could try to get a local zoner meetup going at SanO.

That would be awesome.  Count me in!

I love this topic because it lets me know that at 50 I have the potential of many years of active fun still left to enjoy. I see several folks in their 60's and 70's out all the time, but for friends we surf with a couple in Santa Barbara and she's 60 (something) and learned to sup surf just recently.  I think that taking the sport up in your 50's or 60's is very doable.  If your body doesn't force you out of the water, then there's no reason to leave. :)

Right on, SJ.  That's exactly why I asked the question, because I am mid 50's and don't want to quit SUS anytime soon.  I suppose it's a "use it or lose it" kind of thing.  Barring major health crisis, those who keep athletic are more likely to be able to continue into their later years.  I think parking on the couch and turning on the TV as a way of life, is the antithesis of this.

SUP General / Who is the oldest person you know of that surfs on an SUP?
« on: December 16, 2013, 08:14:13 PM »
I was wondering what the age limit was for elderly people SUSing.  (not flatwater paddling, surfing)  Of course, there is no real age limit, but I expect that at some point, people are no longer strong enough to SUS as they age.  I know a gentleman who surfs at San Onofre on a waveski who is in his mid 70's.  I think SUSing is a little more strenuous than buttboarding, so I was interested to find out how old the old guys are.  Who do you know or know of?

Sounds wonderful.. a proper Wet Cam.  The only problem I see is weight: 19oz/540g with included lens vs a typical sports cam at 7oz/200g. You are going to need something like this to keep from inducing nausea in your viewers.  If you are expecting to have fun ..and taking pics.

It's got to make great shots tho'... Sports you need to post some pics!

Jim

Jim, that's not someone you know, I hope.

I remember, back when I was a teenager, parking at the top of Big Dume and walking down the trail to go check the surf at Little Dume.  Had surfed Zuma, but had never been to either Dume before.  Didn't pay much attention to the sunbathers until I noticed a naked lady getting her picture taken on one of the big rocks on the beach.  It was at the moment that I looked around and realized that nobody but me had any clothes on.  It was the only time in my life that I felt self-conscious about being dressed.  I wonder if it still functions as a nude beach...probably not.

The funny thing about Old Mans is that there is every kind of kook in the world surfing out there.  95% of the prone surfing I see going on there is laughable.  Which is OK; they are having fun. And, most of the people are mellow, it's only when you get some agro old fart that thinks he owns the place, that you have trouble.  I used to butt board there and poached way past the OK sign regularly.  Had a few old farts gripe at me, but nothing ever came of it.  On rare occasion, a lifeguard will hassle poachers from his truck with a bullhorn.

Now SUSers have totally supplanted the buttboarders (waveskiers) at Dog Patch and I have never heard any of them complain, and I know most of those old guys.  Really nice people, much nicer than the cocky old proners.  But the buttboarders generally can't get a wave because of all the SUSers.  SUSers can see and get to the waves before most of them can.  (Except for Greg) They just mostly quit coming and did not make a fuss.  I still see a few of them on a Saturday, but most are gone.  One told me I went over to the "Dark Side" by going SUP.  He laughed and then said he was thinking of joining me!

Never surfed Tamarack before.  Watched it from the bluff a couple of times when I had business down there and no time to surf, but was never able to go out.

Just let me know about a SanO trip and I'm most likely in.  I'll probably go down a couple of times during my Christmas break.  When you are in town, let me know; I'm good for just about any Saturday and maybe an occasional Sunday.

SanO is not the greatest surf in the world I know, really mushy, but I enjoy the vibe down there.  Peaceful, friendly and mellow.  Nice to surf for awhile, then sit in a beach chair, drink coffee and chat or read, then go out for another session.   And of course, stopping a Pedro's Tacos on the way back is a must!
