Gear Talk / Ocean Kayak Nalu?
« on: December 09, 2013, 01:33:53 PM »
Has anyone tried the Ocean Kayak Nalu?  It is sort of a SUP and sort of a kayak.  Designed to stand up on with the option of sitting and using it as a kayak.  Probably does neither task well, but I was wondering if there were any opinions on it?

I've organized and guided kayaking trips at Santa Cruz Island off the coast of California for the past decade.  It's a spectacular place and the sea caves are otherworldly.  I have recently been bit by the SUP bug and am considering doing it this year on a SUP.  Has anyone tried that?  Is anyone interested in that sort of thing?   Still not sure if it's a good idea, but I might organize a trip in August if I have any takers.  It's always no charge by me, you just pay your own expenses.

It would be most of three days at a rough campsite with few amenities.  We would leave early on a Friday morning and return late on a Sunday night.  Boat departs from Ventura, Ca.  There is an opportunity for a roughly 5 mile downwind run back to camp on the second day.  We go upwind in the morning when it is calm, hit a bunch of amazing caves, and go back to camp with an afternoon wind at our backs that is usually 15 to 20 knots.

Technique / Do you widen your stance when it is choppy?
« on: December 08, 2013, 04:33:42 PM »
I was out this afternoon in choppy 1 - 3ft surf and discovered that widening my stance gives me a little more stability when the water is choppy.  I'm sort of teaching myself how to transition from 25 years of prone surfing, to SUP surfing, so I'm discovering new things all of the time.

Is it common to widen your stance, with your feet almost to the rails, when paddling in choppy waters?  Am I right; does it give you more stability?  Or am I fooling myself?

Gear Talk / Anybody know where I could demo a Fanatic AllWave in SoCal?
« on: December 07, 2013, 10:26:01 AM »
Anybody know where I could demo a Fanatic AllWave in SoCal?   Being new to the sport, but a long time prone surfer, I can't decide which length would work for me.  I would be willing to pay for the opportunity to try one.

Thanks,
Mike

Gear Talk / Should I buy a Fanatic AllWave?
« on: December 06, 2013, 05:51:56 PM »
I'm a middle-aged guy who has surfed all of his life, but I'm new to SUP.  I quickly became able to catch and ride waves on my Edge Elite 10'6" beginner surf SUP, but I'm already getting frustrated with it's inability to turn on a wave.  It turns, but it's like turning a freighter.  I don't need to slash and rip, but I do want my board to turn a little better.

I'm on the verge of buying a 9'5" Fanatic AllWave.  I'm about 185LBS trying to get down to 175LBS.  Does anyone have thoughts on an AllWave for my ability level? I'm still a little bit of a tippy beginner in some respects, but I can catch and ride waves.  I live a couple blocks from the ocean and am on an SUP 3 or 4 times a week, so I hope to improve rapidly.

Thoughts, advice, suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

Gear Talk / Anyone have experience with the Walden Magic SUP?
« on: December 01, 2013, 01:31:40 PM »
Anyone surfed on the Walden Magic SUP's?  What do you think?  For years I have ridden a Walden Mega Magic 8' traditional surfboard and have really liked it.  Now, I notice they have Magic SUP's available.   I'm thinking about getting the 9'11".

My background: I'm a longtime surfer who has recently transitioned to SUP.  A few months ago I bought an Edge 10' 6" E-Lite board as my first SUP.  It's a surf capable, beginner board and it's not bad, but I am finding that I'm already wishing for something that turned a little quicker on waves.  I'm not interested in a short board for slashing and shredding.  Too hard to catch waves, too much work, been there/done that on traditional surfboards. Now I just cruise, cutback, and occasionally get tubed.  Nothing impressive, but I love it...especially on an SUP.

Would a Magic 9"11' be a good choice for an old cruiser like me?

Technique / Proper stance for catching waves
« on: November 30, 2013, 06:34:15 PM »
I'm fairly new to SUP surfing, but I have surfed in the traditional manner for many years.  I'm a little confused about paddling stance when catching waves.  I find that I'm more comfortable catching waves with one foot about 12 inches behind the other.  It's about half way between the facing forward stance and the full sideways stance that you use when actually surfing a wave.

Here's what confuses me.  Most of the people at the breaks where I surf face fully forward when paddling for a wave and then they switch to a full surfing stance once they catch the wave.  This is unstable to me.  I find that I can trim the board better when my feet are in the modified stance.  It's easier to walk forward a bit when trying to scratch into a mushy wave and easier to walk back if the wave stands up and gets steep.  The facing forward stance just doesn't make sense to me when paddling for a wave, but most people are doing it that way.  What am I missing?
