i play it by skill level...If im the best surfer out there- prone or SUS- its fair game....If a proner is killing it- - i'll give him all the room in the world and all the props. I agree though its a case by case basis. IMHO the worst proners are the summer pro's (they are all out today in NJ) who just suck ass at surfing and have an attitude to match. I watched a guy paddle and miss at least 6 waves the other day- then as im already on a wave 25 yards from him-(again i have already made 2 bottom turns...) he yells "DONT DROP IN ON ME ASS--LE" that particular gentleman and I had a chat afterwards about exactly what dropping in means. Bonus...we were the only two people in the water- and he paddled right out to where I was surfing (beach break)

Linter- How do you like the Hammer vs. the alllwave on east coast style beach breaks- or or you just using it on those RI points and rock/reefs?

awesome- great suggestions guys.
Jimk- May take you up on another zoner discount (i bought my 9'5 Allwave from you a while back)
I am going to try to borrow an 8 inch off a buddy- and go from there.
I wish i could go fish or without a center fin- but its a single box board

I'd go with the Nugg- I surf LI and NJ....and if you prone surf as well- and are like many paddlers- Prone surf when it gets to be head high or better- and SUP to fill the gaps-it is probably a good choice.
Especially on LI as you said- mushy beachbreak....you will appreciate a little more board. - and to deal with the summer onshore winds.
Caution...if you are like me- and the head high swells start coming in the fall and you realize you want to SUP instead of surf...you will soon be much, much poorer! (as I now am- my prone boards are disapearing and my sup collection growing)

So I’m starting to prepare for the knee high surf days of a NJ summer.... My flat-water / small wave board is an Isle 10'10- (aka my wife's board) She loves it for flat-water- and the thing catches everything thigh high and down. It now has a 10 inch fiberglass fin http://www.islesurfboards.com/isle-sup-10inch-boxfin.aspxI'd love more maneuverability- I am super stable on it, and don't need that much fin..(I use an 8'5 in good conditions) It’s a single fin....I realize it’s not going to turn like a short board...but does anyone have some suggestions on what I could substitute to be able to carve a little quicker? I realize i could just go smaller- but any shape suggestions? or fins that make logs a bit more sporty?

I have found that I would rather have a higher wave count and longer session- than get one extra snap turn on a wave because I rode a board too short or narrow for the conditions.
I know everyone is going as short as possible..but for people that SUS in chop frequently - all the work takes away some of the fun.
I am one of those guys who gets to surf when my schedule permits- not conditions- so I’m always looking to make the best of junk conditions.
I have a 9'5 allwave that I ride in those conditions (Thanks JimK!) even though I will ride an 8'5 with 50 less liters when its glassy .

I think Rhizotomy is the house brand of that new SUP shop in Manasquan? Is that where you found it?
Never heard of them outside of that shop.

as a customer of Jim K's and close to your weight (210ish w/out winter gear) you should check out the 8'10 or 9'4 allwave.
I have the 9'4 as a 'shortboard' for choppy days for stability- but still catches knee high waves. When the waves are bigger/glassier- i move down to my SB pocket rocket.
my wife also uses the allwave it in flatwater sometimes as well....

to Creek's point...sometime a gopro makes a tiny wave look hero...and monsters look tiny. Heres a day I took the gopro out- knee high at best on the longboard..yet looks so much bigger.

I live on the upper east side...keep my prone boards here in NYC- and occasionaly annoy my wife by keeping my 8'5 pocket rocket SUP in the apt. Other than that my two boards reside in storage North NJ.
always up for a buddy to hit the waves...im in sales so my schedule flexes with the waves...let me know when you want to head out- either flatwater with some notice (to get my 9'5 or 10 ft board) or session in the waves with my 8'5

I have two Isle Pro paddles - one i use as a beater and one is my wifes.... I also own a Ke Nalu
Obviously the difference it huge...BUT- for 100 bucks or whatever the Isles are- the isle pro has been a trooper- take an absolute beating- sure not the lightest- but I have paddled much worse in rental paddles and off the shelf off brand carbons i have borrowed for comparison
...a great paddle for the money.- (But you eventually will yearn for something better)
