SouthEast / Jacksonville / Atlantic Beach Area 2/8
« on: December 21, 2016, 10:54:28 AM »
Hey Florida Zoners.

I have a meeting at  One Ocean Resort
1 Ocean Boulevard
Atlantic Beach, FL 32233

on 2/8 and 9...i want to try to grab a day on either end to get some surf in as I have never surfed Florida..  Can anyone tell me if there are sup friendly breaks in the area- and anyone with decent performance rentals?  I ride sub 9ft performance boards - (see signature) but could prone too if the waves are good enough.

also would love to grab a session with any zoners in the area.  I suspect a 3/2 will get me by ok for water temps there in Feb?

any other info would be appreciated!

Sessions / New (to me) board stoke session!
« on: November 18, 2016, 05:23:00 PM »
Picked up a board from fellow zoner wildman22_sup this past week. Just thanked him in the Classifieds

8'8 El Tigre- Riviera.  it has a stock FCS GoPro Mount on the nose.  Never used a nose mount before.  Bought the board- go pro on and caught some chest high NJ swell within an hour of buying.

Stoked. figured i'd share some of the screenshots.  Defintly need to get the angle of the camera better- way too much sky!

*no I didnt make the barrel- but i had to try to see if i could get a tube shot frontside with the go pro....

Gear Talk / Looking for 3/2 wetsuit suggestions
« on: August 01, 2016, 07:08:45 AM »
Hey Gents-

So its been about 10 years on my current 3/2 (Body Glove Vapor , top of the line at the time) and it is officially done....

I've got an ex football player build- (big shoulders and chest) so 'no zip' suits have never worked on me. my Winter suit is a chest zip that usually requires my car Snow Scraper to wedge off me if im solo.... :-X

So because I have been out of the game and not up on technology- trying to get some suggestions for a good new 3/2. Here is my wish list

-Durable
-Some type of Zip to allow for easy entry /exit. I surf alone most times
- I surf too so as elastic as possible for paddling (I know technology has to have gotten much better in 10 yrs)
- Available in semi quirky sizes (I'm either an XL or an XL/S)
- Price isnt really an issue as the suit is an essential part to staying comfortable and surfing well and willing to pay for that.

Any input is appreciated- even that from other guys with larger builds or shoulders or dudes that love their suits...

Ke Nalu / Ke Nalu Blade edge question
« on: July 28, 2016, 05:54:20 AM »
Hey Guys-

I just got a new Wiki blade and it has a VERY sharp raised edge as the blade transtions to the shaft,

I also just went down to a 105 ltr board (im 210lbs) so im doing ALOT of paddle whacking...Even with RS Pro the sharp raised seam on the blade cuts right through the RS pro and into the carbon like an ice cream scoop :o

I havent taken the combo back out with major fear of damaging the board.  My old Maliko blade is completely smooth.  (Pictures below for comparison.

Can i sand down this seam? this blade is useless to me because i cant have it even come close to the board without damage- (im trying to eliminate paddle whacks but i have this board 80% underwater...)
Please help!

Red circle is the raised seam and yellow is smooth seam on Maliko

Sessions / Jersey Go Pro Session
« on: June 21, 2016, 06:03:41 PM »
Finally go the go pro on to the paddle- waves were just big enough to care- but not so good i'd be bothered if i missed waves because of trying this out.

Nice little windswell today hoping tomorrow keeps it going.  heres my first screen grab as i process the footage.

Gear Talk / Waist High or less East Coast longboard SUP suggestions
« on: June 12, 2016, 05:53:18 PM »
Well summer is here and so are the ankle slappers.

For anything waist (knee really) or less i have been surfing my wife's Isle glider 10'10. with an Al merrick notched Single fin to help it turn.

Its still waay too much of a tank, and i find myself using it ALOT this summer. (no waves) What i'm looking for is a bit of contradictions in terms and I need the zone's helps- since demo's are hard to come by in NJ.

-TONS of glide.  want to get in real easy since most of these waves close out and the riding occurs before the real pocket happens (as much as it does on knee high waves)

-Ability to turn- I like a good trim and cross step- Not much of a noserider guy- but will. but not at the sacrific of a monther sqare tail and fin. .....but i do want to be able to get up and down the waves and cutback when the opportunity presents- (again as much as can be had on small waves)

- Light.  My wife has trouble loading and unloading her Isle 10'10. its a beast.  i want her to be able to use this by herself and load on and off the car.

- readily availible- No sense buying a summer board if it will deliver in October..

-10-11 ft in length. 170ltrs or under.
again this board will never be ridden in wave bigger than waist high and only in Beachbreak.  I have other boards for the big fun stuff.

PS- im 5'10 205 or so in trunks.

On the radar are the Naish Nalu (Which model?) and Sunova Style- but completely open to suggestions and my info comes from this site where those brands are plugged hard.

most other brands at this length seem to be 'allrounders' which i don't need/ want- at this length it should be surf specific (anything this big will flatwater fine for my needs.)

9'5 fanatic Allwave 170 liters. Used about 10 times. Great board in great shape. $799

Also have heavy duty board bag for 90 and carbon fiber paddle for 80.

Note I will sell board and bag separate from each other but I will only sell paddle if you also buy the board.

Board is in Fair Haven, NJ (Monmouth Co.)

I will consider Trades for either a 14ft'er or 110-130l High Performace or tomo surf shape

Gear Talk / Ke Nalu Blade Suggesions
« on: November 24, 2015, 05:11:39 PM »
guys- my Ke Nalu Wiki blade (84) just bit the dust today after a crack that held on for longer than i ever expected...

its cavatating bad now so i'm going to replace it.

Its been 2 years with this and now there are more offerings i think i need to explore.  I'd like some opinions on the replacement:

Options:
Buy the same blade
Downsize to the 74 Wiki
Explore the Ho'oloa in 84

what Im using it for.  Surfing only.  Punchy NJ beachbreak on a small board where i generally am working high cadence and late drops due to weight and board size. (200LBS - 8'5 pocket rocket and most likely going smaller soon)

Ive loved the paddle and blade by mainly its because i have never had another 'good' paddle in my hands before it.

Gear Talk / Fin choices- Starboard Pocket Rocket as a quad
« on: August 07, 2015, 05:18:01 AM »
Hey guys-

So i have been having a blast riding my SB PR as a quad all summer on <chest high waves.

The problem is right now I'm using the SB 4.7 (FCS M7 equivelent) as my front fins and 'front' m7 fcs fins as my rears.  Essentially running the quad with 4 of the same size fins- the fronts being honeycomb and the rears plastic.

Im only doing this because they are the only fins i have to 'make' a quad (the M7s are the fronts from my shortboard thruster prone board)

I have a pair of  rainbow speedwings that i used in the front as well and didnt like at all (not enough speed/turning gains for the stability lost)

The question is this- I want to get a true Stand up Surf specific quad fin setup for this board.  I think i can go a little bigger on the fronts and keep the rears as FCS M7 size- as i dont want to loose stability while waiting for waves

All i have seen out there thats specific are the Gerry lopez fins. $$

Does anyone riding a <9ft board with quads have any great fin setups to share?  Conditions are usually Under chest high, bumpy east coast swell.

NorthEast / Cape Cod This Thurs through Sun Aug 7-10th
« on: August 02, 2014, 05:29:19 PM »
Hey Cape Codders- (supthecreek stoneaxe and others)

Longtime lurker here- I am headed to the cape with family this upcoming long weekend.  Anyone around for a surf?  I tried to surf the lighthouse last summer- but it seemed wherever i tried to park you needed a permit? looked real fun- i ended up out at coast guard beach- which was also fun but more of a dumpy beach break at the time.

Headed up with my 9'5 allwave and my prone board.  (possibly my pocket rocket if the swell looks big / glassy) Even if anyone cant share a session- some spot knowledge (by PM of course as to not upset the locals) would be much appreciated.

Gear Talk / Suggestions for new 10'10 Center Fin?
« on: June 09, 2014, 09:51:16 AM »
So I’m starting to prepare for the knee high surf days of a NJ summer....

My flat-water / small wave board is an Isle 10'10- (aka my wife's board)  She loves it for flat-water- and the thing catches everything thigh high and down.

It now has a 10 inch fiberglass fin
http://www.islesurfboards.com/isle-sup-10inch-boxfin.aspx

I'd love more maneuverability- I am super stable on it, and don't need that much fin..(I use an 8'5 in good conditions)

It’s a single fin....I realize it’s not going to turn like a short board...but does anyone have some suggestions on what I could substitute to be able to carve a little quicker?  I realize i could just go smaller- but any shape suggestions? or fins that make logs a bit more sporty?

Gear Talk / Ke Nalu hot glue dry time?
« on: March 08, 2014, 01:16:30 PM »
Guys-
I tried searching both the ke nalu site and the forum but can't find a definitive answer on what the 'wait' time is after you assemble the paddle with the hot glue.

Want to do an adjustment tomorrow AM before a surf- would 2 hrs be enough for it to properly set and hit the water?

(Paddle isnt at my house- or else I wouldnt have such a small window to do it)

Thanks!
